Let's go get some nutters and bunnies! I'm up to date; big game, small game and freshwater fishin!
I didn't enroll in the Doe lottery. Not sure I can make that worth my while, living in the city, storing rifles (air gun and powder) in Suffolk County.

We are lucky here in AZ. We can hunt small game with air guns and have an all season rabbit hunt...grin. I just got my PIONEER license for AZ that is a rest of my life license. After you have lived here for over 25 years and are 70 years old you get a FREE license for the rest of your life. Only have to pay for draw permits. Also includes fishing and a trout stamp. So starting this year I will be hunting squirrels and rabbits with my newly acquired air guns. I love Arizona!!!! Chort

Before I get myself into trouble does anyone know what the regs are for NY? Upstate particularly - I suppose I'll be looking to kill that pesky coon that's been eating my wife's birdseed and crapping all over my hot tub. I don't mind the squirrels but the crow population needs thinning. Does one need a hunting license for varmints?

I did some poking around at the DEC's website trying to find out more info on just what things are legal to plink and when. Seems that the info is scattered all over the place. Does anyone have a link where the just list all the critters on one page and when it's legal to hunt them?
Also, I note that I will need to upgrade my fishing license for small game. I read that I'll need a hunting class before they'll issue the license. Do they actually ask for that or could I expect to just pay for the ticket without the cert?

You cannot get a hunting license without doing the class. If you have had a license continually since they made this change then you are grandfathered in. If you have an old license that has lapsed you may be able to get by without the class, I don't know for sure. I did the class last year in Honeoye Falls and found id to be very good.

"So what is the difference between hunting and pest control?"
It is like the difference in dog food and meat loaf. When the dog is hungry you open the can and feed him dog food. When the mother in law visits, you open the can, warm it up and tell her its meat loaf.

I knew this was in the works but failed to notice that it was finally adopted:
Part 180, Section 3 - Definition of Firearms - Express Terms Adopted March 17, 2010 Express Terms
Section 180.3 of 6 NYCRR is repealed and a new section 180.3 of 6 NYCRR adopted as follows:
Section 180.3. Definition and use of firearms, guns, and airguns.
For the purposes of the Fish and Wildlife Law and this Title:
Subdivision (a) of 6 NYCRR section 180.3 is repealed and a new subdivision (a) and (b) of 6 NYCRR section 180.3 added:
(a) The terms "firearm" or "gun" shall mean any rifle, pistol, shotgun or muzzleloading firearm which by force of gunpowder, or an airgun as defined in subdivision (b), that expels a missile or projectile capable of killing, wounding or otherwise inflicting physical damage upon fish, wildlife or other animals.
(b) The term "airgun" shall mean any implement which by the force of a spring, air or other non-ignited compressed gas expels a missile or projectile and has a rifled or smooth barrel, using ammunition no smaller than .17 caliber, producing projectile velocities of not less than 600 feet per second. For the purposes of the Fish and Wildlife Law, an implement meeting the above specifications shall be considered a firearm or gun, and may be used to take protected wildlife whenever such protected wildlife may legally be taken with a rimfire rifle.
