I don't have any use for one, but I wouldn't oppose others having access to it.
Personally I don't have time to chat in "real time" and prefer the threaded style of communications that allows a conversation to develop over several days. If I really have real time communication needs, I ask for a phone number- otherwise I like to see what the group had to contribute over time.
A perfect example is the ongoing discussion of the NPSS rifles. There are about 3 different threads that have evolved (one of them being your "under the hood" write up), with new information being added as people get their guns in the field. I think that's cool.
But then, I'm not on Facebook, either... I'm all too accessible as it is!

I think it would be a nice feature to have.  Like Dave I enjoy seeing threads develop over time and I realize not everyone has the time to sit in front of the pc and chat but then again there are many members like myself who are retired, or perhaps work from home, that have the time and might be interested in a chat room for real time conversing, especially perhaps late at night when there are much fewer members logged in.  Speaking for myself I don't think I'd use it all the time but there are times  when I would enjoy being able to chat in real time.  Anyway, my vote is yes  Smiley

I prefer the treads. Chat seems a little to demanding of an immediate response. I think it would be great for all the A.D.D crowd.

I vote YEA for a couple of reasons. It's nice to just say Howdy.

And can be priceless if you're in the middle of a tune or repair and reach a tricky part. You may find immediate help if needed. If you're deciding on pressing the button on a purchase, it'sgood to be able to bounce it off another member for an opinion of the AG, selleror vendor.

With that said, I'll also throw in the opposite side to weigh. I've modded and adminned on other sites. A chat boxhas the potential toget out of hand. Use of other languages, bad languagesor asking a question that SHOULD be a thread topic instead are some of the major problems. If rules are set up and enforced, a chat box can be VERY valuable and an excellent tool.

    Happy Shooting!!!!

    Dave

I voted yes. I feel that being able to shoot the breeze with some other airgunners in real time could be alot of fun. Especially if you set up specific days for the chatroom to be active. Maybe weekends would be a good start and see if it takes off from there. Nothing like kicking back with an adult beverage and talking (in this case chatting) with others who share your interests.

I have always enjoyed IRC chats.... and alot of chat programs for forums usualy connect to some type of established IRC server through a java based app from the page...which mean geeks like me can just stay logged in through software like mIRC or pIRC or any of the hundred or so other IRC chat proggies out there....

It should not eat up anymore bandwidth unless your hosting the IRC server yourself.... but there are a litteralton of free hosted IRC servers out there so there is no real reason to do so... there is a small learning curve for IRC chats as far as OPS(room moderators) go but thats nothing very hard to learn and any command can be scripted etc etc

the reality of it is after the newness wears off itmay not get used much...but its always a great tool and alot of times a few people usualy end up being around all the time and it IS nice to be able to chat in real time...

It's always good to have real time swapping of ideas on real time needs when troubleshooting or likes when stumped on breaking the airgun. Only problem is overuse of acronyms like texters uses. Cya!

In most of the forums I belong to, chat rooms are not used very often at all !

They seem to be use mostly on "People meeting People" sites.

When someone is on, themembers that have the answers are not on, or do not check the chat rooms.

If someone needs help or advice immediately, it's faster to make a post on the SHOP GATE or AirGun Gate!

A chat room for moderators might be helpful for alerting the other moderators of problems developingonline though ? And whatstrings to keep an eye on. Something you wouldn't post over a forum ? These seem to work well on other forums that I am aware of !

    Just my thoughts.

I am going say yes a good idea for those that like chit chatting real time, to  say howdy to each other and fun etc..so no objection either way:) Not sure its for me tho,  i dont have all that much extra time to spend with everything else going at the house, I am more forum and phone call  guy . I like to take time, read and post at my normal  pace then check other posts so that i learn stuff that i did not know about Ag's:)
I dont think I am really qualified to say any ideas why not have a chat room the "what if's" if you like!  but will mention what comes to mind... obviously everyone to stay civil and be nice, hard to police a possible troll would be bad for new person to see crazy reply of stuff, and then think all GTA is like that.  Where there is a chioce some people may be more inclined to  ask questions on the chat expecting easy instant answers and not get it?  Good answers and info would not be availble to view later like on the forum.  I would hate miss some really juicy about AG's  because it was on the chat and not on the forum:)  may alter the dynamics of GTA. Forums work because they gatherway more  info over time for all to see?. Extra time and effort needed from moderators?
anyway not sure I make sense but hope it helps, Tony.

I agree with ezman on the support deal and have a PC up and running on the work bench to use to research parts, fix's, and even exploded views of what I'm working on, to many times I get stumped and have to post a question on a forum and not get an answer for days and by then my patience was up and did the job wrong only to have someone post the correct way a week later and then I do not understand one part and have to repost the same question with a different detail only to wait a few days for the answer. I'm not saying I'm into sitting up all night in a chat room yappen I'd rather be working on my guns but I am guilty off needless yappen thru the threads so maybe a chat room would relieve any needless long threads so I vote YES FOR SUPPORT AND HELLO'S this forum is like a bottomless pit of knowledge with members that are well versed in so many different trades and sciences that I know if I don't know something I will find the answer here. THANK YOU GTA you taught me    air rifles!!!!!
