So over the weekend I tried out 3 different springs in my .177 B26. I did not remove the piston or change the seal at this time. The seal was replaced when I got the gun with one provided by Mike Melick. This gun has been deburred, honed and lubed, with piston and springs polished by myself. Tested mid day in the high 60 to low 70s F. 6800 feet above sea level.

1 Original OEM in the gun
2 Factory replacement from Mike Melick (Longer than factory)
3 RWS 320 Spring from Mike Melick (shorter than both)

The RWS 320 spring shoots like a dream just a good solid thunk, there is no twist no vibration just a good straight back kick, also very easy to cock with no spring bind or crunch.
The OEM spring is a little crunchy and a little tough, but shoots smooth.
The Factory replacement is harder to cock and has some buzz and twist.

Here are the chrony results.

..............................
Pellet..........Advertised..Weight....(fps) OEM Spring..(fps) Long Spring...(fps) Short RWS320 Spring
..............................
RWS Superlight.......5.2..................939.............................937...........................935
Gammo..................6.5..................950.............................945...........................942
Hobby.....................7....................797............................794...........................790
Silver Bear...............7.1..................774............................763
Beeman Hp.............7.2..................765............................763...........................767
Super-H-Point..........6.9..................790............................789...........................785
Crosman Point..........7.9..................762............................761...........................755
Crosman HP.............7.9..................751.............................................................744
RWS Super Points.....8.2...................................................720............................721
SuperDome..............8.3..................730............................725...........................724
Meisterlugeln............8.3..................735.............................731...........................750
H&N FTT Dome........8.64.................702.............................Na...........................708
Crow Magnum..........8.8..................690............................688...........................690
CP Heavy.................10.5.................651...........................650...........................645

So I left the short spring in for now because as I was testing it the numbers actually started to climb. Since the FPS loss was minor to begin with and it shoots better it seemed like a good choice.

BTW those RWS HyperMAX .177 Cal, 5.2 Grain pellets are super JUNK! At 35 yards shooting 20 of them they look like a shotgun blast on a 8.5x11 target not one pellet close to the other and the spread is from edge to edge. I will test them at 10 yards but they may be bad for the gun in general.

The Gammos are very accurate though. even out to 50 yards.

Interesting to know about the RWS320 spring.   Results for this spring seem quite good.   Since you called it the " short " spring, could you give some idea as to the length that it was before you installed said spring??  I may get one for my B-26.   The spring that is currently in my AG must be 2 feet long and a real nasty to compress.

Sorry Bogy I didn't measure it, but I say it is short enough that I almost didn't need the spring compressor. I will be running the Chrony on it with some new pellets in a couple days and will post the results as I think it is getting faster because the H&N FTT pellets rose up 1.5 inches at 35 yards. I am now using the 10.5 CP Domes and hitting dead center at 35 yards. This pellet was 1.5 mils low before. Call Mike and get one of those springs.

Hey, thanks for the testing and posting those results. Between the numbers, and your description of shooting behavior, it sure seems like the RWS320 spring is the way to go.

I only wonder if the results would carry over to the .22 versions... the greater mass and bigger tube might change the dynamics a little.

Would you mind buying a .22 and re-running your test?

I had it in my .22 B26-2 but replaced it with the JM E3650 the RWS320 spring felt better but the E3650 gives me about 40 more fps. I think it is a good spring for the .177 not so sure for the .22. I am going to order a E3650 for the .177 and test that next.

The E3650 spring is a good spring for the b26 and around 900 fps was the sweet spot that i found to be very pleasent and accurate but if you want more i used the r9 turrantula 33 coil spring and it would spit 7.9 grains above the sound barrier but was very violent and noisy and could not seem to tame it so i removed and put it in my cfx.

Just in case anyone is interested I got a RWS320 spring from Mike Melick and used it in my RWS93 (Cometa). Worked out great so there are lots of uses for that spring.

Bobbyjim just so you know, the Crosman Quest spring is about the same. I also added a couple of washers to the top of the spring and one in the back and gained about 50 FPS before break in.
