Storm XT tune

I am completely new to the whole air gun scene as well as tuning. I am quite certain I can tune my own gun given my background as a machinist/progammer/assembler as well as doing R&D along side engineering at my workplace. I just would like to see some well written guides with a fair amount of pictures throughout the process just to get my knowledge of air guns as well as the terminology down. As well as just all in all know my way around an air gun. I know I got a cheap gun for my first gun, I plan on getting an RWS 52 or a TX200 MKIII by the end of the year. I just wanted something to try out for right now and see if air gunning would become as addictive to me as I had read it was. I'm here to say i'll be here for a LONG time as I have found my new passion. I would just love to get some links to some well written guides to see the process from start to finish.

I have some big plans once I tear mine down and do the tune. Basically creating some of my own replacement parts and see how they fair, if i like the concept hell I may turn around and start producing parts for people but that would be a long way down the road.

Alex, welcome to GTA Forums and the world of airgun addicts.

Be prepared, you will be hooked. If you have the mechanical skills and the WANT to dip into home tuning, you're half way there already. I looked at the link supplied and although it's good instructions, I just want to stress SAFETY first. You will need to build or buy a good spring compressor to be able to safely disassemble ANY spring powered airgun.

There's a lot of useful info to be had on this site, just do a search of whatever key words you need help with. There's a LOT of great folks here willing to help you with any issues you have. Just ask. And we all like to see pictures. Be sure to post often and post pictures of all of your AG adventures.

You made a good choice for a starter tune.  I just finished a Quest (essentially the same rifle) tune and it made a world of difference.  There are instructions and references already posted that are as good or better than I could tell you so I won't repeat that.  You will probably need a new piston seal because nearly every one I ever tore down was cut up from manufacturing burrs (that you remove during the tuning process) so just order a new one from Crosman or Jim Macarri.  If you get stuck, just make a post and someone will chime in with some advice.  For me, tuning is the most fun part of this sport!

Just make sure you fix yourself up a spring press before you start and you will get through it just fine.

I'll sound like a broken record here asking all these questions but more seasoned vets will know the answer to this. What is the BEST guide online for a home-made spring compressor? I'm not worried about cost, I want to see the nicest one and then see what I can work out on my own. If need be i'll just copy my jewelry vice I made and just scale it up to be large enough for a springer, probably with removable brass or some soft plastic jaws. But if someone has a really good design out there I would love to see it.

On a note of safety--if you are doing this for the first time, please be careful.
Some of those springs have a good bit of pre-load on them and they can hurt you if they fly out of there.
Be sure and wear safety glasses!!!!!.
