Although it is wrong, unless you have walked a mile in a Policeman's or Soldiers shoes, or anyone facing the potential of imminent death in the service of others, you just can't imagine the mental terror of walking into potential deadly situations day after day wondering when this time could be your last call !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I don't know of anyone out there that can say for a certainty that it couldn't happen to them.
Yesterday a man shot and killed the women he was going to be married to today, when she walked into his home unexpectedly last night. She wasn't supposed to be there, but now she's dead.
Like those that have shot cows and other hunters, identifying targets when in extreme mental and physical conditions, can be impossible at best. You start seeing what you expect to see, and you do not want to die, today !!!!
So having been there, I will not be the one to cast the first stone. Put anyone into these situations often enough, and either the person will shoot when he shouldn't, or be shot, because they hesitated.
It's wrong and sad in either situation, only the officer will now live with the knowledge that he killed an innocent men for the rest of his life ! and an innocent man is dead !
