Gamo Whisper scope problem
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:28:31 AM »
I'm new to this site so bear withme if this has already been asked. I just purchased a Gamo Whisper with scope, laser ,and light. I mounted the scope but I have a shadow in the bottom third or quarter of the sight picture. I removed the fixed sight but the shadow remains. It seems like the mount is too low to clear the scope above the barrel. I called Gamo and they wanted me to send it to them. Any ideas from anyone before I send it off. Thanks for your help.

Jack, first off, a big welcome to the GTA forum and family.  I think two of my air rifles with scopes are in that situation.....I see a very little bit of the barrel or "Iron sight (Front)".  But this only happens when I'm shooting in dim light/indoors.  When I'm outdoors the scopes are fine.  Don't know how much "shadow" you're seeing with your Whisper....maybe you can shim the front and rear of the scope mounts to elevate the scope abit.

First off welcome to the GTA FAMILY Jack happy to have you aboard. :)  It sounds like the scope is getting a partial view of the "Whisper" end of the barrel . If your using low mount's I would just upgrade to some good one piece medium mount's to raise the scope up off the action more. There are some members here that have a Whisper if I remember right and hopefully they'll jump in and give you the skinny on scope height recommendation's. Ed

I actually see quite alot even outdoors. Should I remove the front sight? I removed the rear one. The shadow takes up at least a quarter of the sight picture. Thanks for the quick response. I will try to shim it with something.

I used the mounts that came with the gun. I think they are too low. Gamo should recognise this problem and have a fix for us. Thanks for the quick reply!

Keep the low mounts and remove the open sights.  You'll get more accuracy when your scope is as close to the bore of the rifle as possible.  Take a look at Leupold's riflescope: http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/products/scopes/vx-7-riflescopes/vx-7l-4-5-18x56mm-long-range/  and see how the Objective bell of the scope is formed in such as way so that it can bring the centerline scope closer to the rifle's bore, while achieving greater f.o.v. and light transmission.  Note that this is a riflescope and NOT and air riflescope, so don't go out spending $1,000 on this scope.  I'm only including the link as an example.

Welcome,
Yes, your seeing the flared end of the "noise reducer" and the front sight. The hooded sight is removable and I took mine off. The hood is on by spring tension and the sight is dovetailed. It's a snug fit dovetail, tap gently on it sideways and it will come right out.

With my Whisper, I get the same dark half-moon shadow in the bottom of the scope when it's set on the lower powers. It disapears compleatly at 5 power and above.

The one - piece scope mount that came with my Whisper is a medium height. I like the scope as close as possable to the barrel centerline so I stuck with that height. I've gotten used to that shadow. It doesn't interfer in anyway with what I'm aiming at.

Just make sure the scope body is not touching the reciever.

You can get a higher mount but you'll still probaly see some of that noise reducer on the lowest power and it will bring your cheek off the gun even more. To get a good check weld, I had to add a check pad even with the medium high mount.

I will try the higher power. I will take off the front sight. Thanks for the reply.
