Hey guys, I'm trying to put together a "quick and dirty" SCBA to paintball style filler. I got myself a SCBA (NOT SCUBA!!!!) 4500 PSI tank with about 7 years left (per the DOT), and want to use it to fill my Sumatra (I'm putting on the foster quick connect fitting as soon as that arrives). Being a broke-ass college student, as much as I admire Joe's beautifully put together harnesses, I would be irresponsible not to try to do it cheaper, and get the sense of accomplishment from doing it myself. I'll be honest though, if I had it to do over again, I would have purchased one of Joe's tanks and the fill harness as a single package so I could be absolutely confident it would all work. Ah well, live and learn. SO, where can I find the fittings? I'm going to need the CGA 347 fitting, plus a way to bleed the hose, and the foster (female) quick disconnect and probably some hose, a pressure gauge wouldn't hurt but my Sumatra does have one built in (by the way, anyone know the threads on the built-in pressure gauge on the Sumatra? I might want to upgrade at some point). I'll also need a male-to-male foster fitting for filling up at the paintball shop (significantly cheaper than the fire safety supply place AND close to my school!).

Any suggestions guys? Saving money and learning to do it myself is good, but safety is important too!

Who would have thought that finding the foster disconnect in high enough PSI would be the problem? Yikes! However a couple of the harder to find parts that I managed to find are here:
6000 PSI bleed valve  http://aeroconsystems.com/cart/products/Model_712_6000_PSI_Bleed_Valves-197-0.html
SCBA fill adapter fitting http://aeroconsystems.com/cart/products/Model_835_SCBA_Fill_Adaptors-200-55.html
High pressure micro bore hose http://www.ralstoninst.com/hoses/custom/2M2M-HOS-3ft  (manufacturer so you need to find a distributor)

I'm also curious as to what's the difference between these the female disconnect on Joe's site and the one at Pyramid (the disconnect looks like this: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Female_Quick_Disconnect_Male_or_Female_1_8_BSPP_Threads/2989 )

Wow, spending a couple of days on this has really given me an appreciation for the amount of work the guy put into finding all the piece/parts to put together his hose assemblies, talk about a lot of virtual leg-work!! Note, I'm not trying to clone his adapter, I just like the micro-bore hoses because you waste less air that way.

Sorry about the lack of comments Michael. There have been over 30 views of this post , so there is some interest. I haven't fallen into the dark side "yet", so I have no info myself.  Maybe a post on the dark side might get more results. Good luck brother, snookman

Putting together your own SCBA adapter
« Reply #5 on: March 01, 2010, 10:32:31 AM »
Putting together your own SCBA - to - paintball (AKA foster quick release) isn't that hard to do, ONCE you know the parts you need and have a few sources. Assuming you're using a 4500 PSI SCBA tank to fill your air rifle with, these seem to be the parts to use. The part numbers are from North Shore Compressors & Equipment and will vary from source to source. I'm putting a quick release on my Sumatra as soon as the part arrives from Pyramid, so I needed the paintball quick-disconnect. Otherwise I could have just used the fill probe that came with the air rifle. I'm picking up a 5800 PSI air hose locally with 1/8" male NPT fittings, it's costing me $15. These are apparently the same size fittings the "micro-bore hoses" made by Ralston that Joe sells are available with. I plan on getting one of those micro-bore hoses later. The other part that I didn't put here is the pressure gauge, which will connect to the hose. I ordered a 5000 PSI liquid filled pressure gauge which I will be attaching to the tee.

F-06151  (hand tight CGA-347 nut and nipple)     $34         <~This part connects to your SCBA fitting on the tank and provides a 1/4" NPT male nipple to connect everything to.
A-B1115 (MxF 6000 PSI bleed valve)                  $23.99     <~Important! Bleeds the air from your lines AFTER your gun is filled and before you can release the quick-release
F-01411  (1/4" FNPT Tee)                                  $5.88         <~For connecting a pressure gauge, I suppose you can do without a pressure gauge if you trust the one that's on your airgun.
F-01115  (1/4" MNPT to 1/8" FNPT Bushing)       $1.00        <~Required to connect one end of the air hose since the hose has 1/8" male NPT ends
F-08110  (Paintball quick disconnect)                 $16.75       <~Female disconnect end, you can get ones for paintball but I don't know if they're truly rated for the pressure, I figured it was safer to buy it here. It is 1/8" femaleNPT fitting to 1/8" female foster fitting, so it'll connect to the hose without an adapter.

In addition, I picked these up to make a male-to-male quick release for charging the tank at a paintball store.
two of F-08111 (1/8" MNPT paintball nipples)      $6.50 each, $13 for both
F-02152  (1/8" pipe coupler)                              $1.76
Total of $14.76 for a male-to-male quick release fitting.

Overall I think I saved a few bucks by putting things together myself. If you're charging small air tanks/cylinders rather than a long semi-awkward rifle I think you can do without the air hose and some of the fittings and save yourself a few bucks.

ANY suggestions would be appreciated!
