Gamo Hunter Sport with nitro piston
« on: February 03, 2010, 07:21:13 AM »
Hello all I didnt see any reviews on this one yet.

I got my Gamo hunter with nitro piston and put a Leapers 4 X 40 Tactedge scope on it and the GRT 3 trigger. All I can say is I am amazed with the power and accuracy of this combo. I like the weight of the wood stock over synthetic's which is why I chose this instead of another big cat with the Gas piston. I like the gas piston upgrade also. Shoots smoother than the Big Cat spring gun I have and a little more accurate. The big difference was the GRT 3 trigger I installed. That thing is amazing. Very light short pull compared to stock and definately makes it an easier gun to shoot. The scope that it comes with and the 1 peice mount is nice so I replaced the stock scope on the big cat with it. I got the Leaper for this one. The scope is realy nice, crystal clear fov at all ranges from about 10 ft out. Illuminated reticle is cool dont know if I will use it, but still cool to have. I really like the zero locking turrets. I took this out and shot about 8 differnt kinds of pellets through it all shot well but the best by far were H&N Barracuda Match 10.65 gr. 2nd were the Gamo Match 7.71 gr if I remember right gamo hunters pointed were right behing that.  Worst were PBA ammo. I shot beer cans and pine cones at varying ranges and heights for all the angles I could get to include straight up. Anything within about 40 yards was in trouble. In the garage 35 ft test I grouped pellets on top of each other several times. I will take it down to the swamp this weekend to see just how far I can stretch it out and still get good groups.

As for power I shot the 10.65 gr through a 3 in pine branch at point blank range. Pine is soft but still thats impressive to me. Should be more than enough to take down small wooland creatures when I get the time.  This is a very good rifle and if any body is looking at the gas piston upgrade for their guns, I like it. Not to take anything away from sring guns cause my big cat is still a dam good shooter but this one is better.

PBA 5.4gr  Avg Vel Hunter 1214 ft lbs 17.67 ft lbs , Big cat 1075 vel 13.86 ft lbs accuracy was horrible! If you want a loud crack by them, if you want to hit small targets avoid!
RWS Superdome 8.3 gr  Hunter 917.86 fps , 15.59 ft lbs Big cat 826.86 vel 12.6 ft lbs. Great accuracy and penetration! I like these pellets and recommend trying them.
H&N Barracuda 10.65 gr Hunter 807.82 fps 15.43 ft lbs. Big cat 714.84 fps 12.08 ft lbs. Great groups out of both guns. Deepest penetration.
Gamo Match  7.71 gr Hunter 926.26 vel 14.691 ftlbs. Big cat 873.06 vel 13.05 ft lbs. Good groups, good all around ammo.
JSB diablo 7.33 gr Hunter 932.64 vel 14.16 ft lbs big cat 926.12 vel 13.96  ftlbs Very good groups and penetration. Big cats favorite ammo by far! Shoots hight right out of hunter. but great groups.
Gamo Hunter 7.56 gr 966.12 vel 15.67 ft lbs Big cat 891.52 vel 13.34 ft lbs. This will be nmy go to ammo in the hunter with RWS super domes 2nd.  Excellent groups and penetration.

Hope this helps any one. Ran this thing against my big cat spring gun. LOve them both but this one get the trophy.
