We are back up and running temporarily
« on: June 15, 2010, 04:30:21 AM »

... Hi Gang..... yes, it'sgood to be back up and running again but there are still problems and we are still running off of the old server and there will be additional problems during the transition for the nextseveral days. The important thing is that it appears that we have not lost much if any of our membership data. That was our biggest concern.

All we can say to all of you is thank you to all of for sticking by us and we are very apologetic for the inconvenience that it has been causing. Hopefully this won't ever happen again once we get around it.

Thank you Gene for working day and night in your efforts to get us back up and running. I know and could sense during our many phone conversations while we were down and considering the different alternatives that you were very frustrated and at your wits end and had to make some very tough decisions and the concerns that you had regarding the possible loss of years of work. That said, you made the right calls. We can't thank you enough. Lunch is on me my friend.

AIN'T THIS A GREAT PLACE TO BE????

To the moderators>>>>>>>> Please do not make any moves of posts or changes in posts for the next couple of days until all of the dust settles.

Again, thanks to all of you from myself, Gene and Peak Chick

Glad nothing was lost. You guys need to look into a backup routine! As far as what is going on for the new server, the error I get in the browser suggests that the httpd.conf is incorrectly configured. I have some experience with that and would be glad to look at the file!

Just for the record, I have been doing backups for 7 years now. When our  current host did the big server changeover I lost my control panel  which gives me access to our data base back up. The new control panel  did not work or was not finished. My last back up was May 1st. I  got access back to the old control panel yesterday. I backed up our  system and downloaded the back up data.  You cannot do this simply with  an ftp download. I retired from the IT world 10 years ago. Things have  changed considerably but still the same issues.  Our host really screwed  us up. They were a good host up until they did there new server change  over three weeks ago.

Now we are in the migration period it takes our domain name to point to  the new host. Maybe up to 72 hours. I am leaving on vacation Thursday  and will not be back until the following week. Bob has all the  information that I sent him so he can deal with them if there is an  issue. He also has my phone number in case he needs me for help. God save them if Bob has to call them...:)

Thanks for all of your support and lets hope our new Host will be good  to us.

ok, you obviously know what you are doing. You might want to look into bluehost.com, who I have been using for about 10 years now. great service, virtually 100% uptime, seamless enhancements, and INEXPENSIVE.

Richard  There are host and there are hosts..:)  Static websites are never a problem hosting. The GTA needs a special host. One that will give us unlimited disc space, unlimited data base storage, unlimited uploads and traffic.. See, we are a forum and forums use allot of cpu and memory along with traffic. So there are thousands of host but not not that many offer what we need to run the GTA and grow.  I have paid for our fourm doman and hosting, including security for 7 years now out of my pocket. Bob and I truly want to help the new airgunners and provide a place for help, information etc. We are a special forum. We do not advertise or take money from vendors etc for favors.. We want you the members to have a nice place to come and learn, enjoy and talk about your new guns and other toys...:)

Gene, I know. I am running 13 sites out of bluehost. I have unlimited traffic and some very excellent services, as well as cpanel, and they are constantly upgrading services, and I never pay a penny more. You may want to check it out. The base unlimited service may work for you, and they have an upgrade to a higher level of service with dedicated servers. I worked for a company that provided SAAS for fundraising organizations like the red cross, as well as data-storage and real-time backup to a second location. I know a little about it too...and the people I worked with were pretty-much at a loss as to how they could provide competition. If you are down for several days because of a service switch, the service may not be your best option. I do not doubt at all you know what you need...I was just saying you might want to check bluehost out...

Good to see you back up.

I really feel your pain. We've had a few outages with our forums too. Server company going teats up. Hacker. Server company losing half their servers to an explosion/fire. DOS attacks.

I will say that the Planet has been pretty good for us.

Thanks for sweating the details on our behalf.

One thing the outage made me realize is that I have very little contact info for members here, unless I had done personal business with them at some point. I may store a few of them for future emergencies!

Well, I finally was able to log on this evening, after some failures in the last few days.  I'm glad to see this operating again and hope the migration to a new host and servers will help.
