Whisper won't cock
« on: June 19, 2010, 02:18:10 PM »
Well my continued bad luck with .177 guns continues!  This time it is the only one that has ever been accurate.  My Whisper won't cock. When you pull it down it won't go all the way and won't latch.  What is the likely cause?  I've sold ALL of my other .177 guns and this is the last one left.  I was thinking the spring may have broken.

My other bad luck of the week is the trigger guard broke on my TF 99.  I have a new one on the way.  They are just plastic it seems.  The cost was $15 for the part-almost a fourth of what I paid for it from Jaymo. :D

Yep, you could very well have a broken spring.

Yep,That is just how mine did as michael said, take off stock an you should be able to see if it's the spring. An if it is at least you can make it shoot even better with a tune,JM's E3650 new ultra spring an apex small seal is what went in mine.It really does shoot better now, lower noise an more acc..

I'm cursed!  I'll pull it apart on Monday and see if the spring is broke.  It was a store model so I don't know if the seal is good or not. What I DO know is it is deadly accurate right now!  I don't want to mess that up.  It was shooting great before I couldn't cock it.  I had been shooting my .22 air guns and I could put the .177 pellets through the holes :)

atchman2  my seal was shot from factory, had metal shaveing inbedded in it,a hole in edge,an enough more shaveing's in compression chamber to start another gun,it would shoot great 3 shot group's an then a flyer(I blamed myself for it)but now if it happen's, it is me,it can now shoot 10 shot group's just 1 large ragged hole at 20yd's(half the size of dime)an a tune will get rid of that dang twang also.

That just happened to my Shadow1000.  I was ready to put a new seal on, but the OEM looked great (to my surprise!), and so did the cylinder.  Before reassembly I did a quickie debur, JM lubes & put in the e3650 spring.  After 200 pellets, shooting 860 fps average....stock OEM seal.  The gun had over 3000 pellets on the stock spring.  Good luck, you gotta git' er done.

Randy,

You know it...broken spring!  OEM Gamos are always a kinked up mess of a spring anyway.  Yup, E3650 is your ticket.

WOW, I'm beginning to believe you on the "cursed" part.  What's up with you and .177 rifles?  I seriously think it is time for you to go to .25 and just give up on the smaller caliber!  LOL

Gee thanks Andy :D

They have been money pits for me that is a fact!  I keep thinking I can get an inexpensive one and fix it up, but that fails for me.  I think I'll just save my dollars and get what I want next time.  By the time I've spent all of the money fixing them up and THEN sending to someone who actually knows what they are doing I could have had a good one.

My Whisper has been good though in the accuracy department.  I was thinking the spring was going bad for a long time.  My reasoning is that it just wasn't hitting as hard as it should.  Because I could hit anything with it and because my girls like shooting it and because it was easy to cock I just left it alone.

Randy,

You've proven what I have figured out the hard way as well (have about 6 rifles I need to part with).  In .177 you want accuracy so no magnums or supermagnums.  What you need is a nice 600-700 fps rifle.  I've picked up a few like HW30s, Diana 24, 27 and 35.  I love them so much I'm going to sell off more of my 850+ .177 springers.

Save the .177 for pistol and match rifles.  Hey how about a nice Walther LGR, Diana 75, 300s?  For $450 you can get a really nice old school match rifle with a trigger to die for and accuracy to match.  Seems like a lot for a 30 year old rifle but consider it avoiding 3 more $150 mistakes.  I picked up my HW30s (Rekord trigger!!!) in new shape for $220.  Added $120 worth in Walther match sights so $340 it is a one holer all day shooter.  Doesn't beat me up and makes me smile!

They also don't have to cost an arm and a leg. I picked up a Daisy 130a (really Spanish made), upgraded the trigger and with a Mendoza peep and target front hood it too is a fun 10-15 yard all day shooter. Got about $100 into it.   Point is they're out there but you might explore 10m shooters.  For longer range stuff get yourself a Disco in .177.

My 2 cents...

P.S.  Disclaimer - never selling my Gamo Big Cat which was my first tune job.  Shoots as good as my TX200!  TX200 is going nowhere either!
