rebluing /oil question
« on: September 08, 2007, 08:46:48 AM »
I had some damage done to a spot on my barrel about the size of a dime. I reblued the area although it didn't match up real well, it looked better than it did before the reblue. I then rubbed it down with rem oil and put it away. I recently pulled it out ant the rebluing spot had turned rusty! I rerubbed it with oil and it darkened right up, is there something I should be doing differently to this?

The only time I've had to deal with rust...

...is when I've used Remoil to wipe down my guns. I've used motor oil, light machine oil, and Breakfree's CPL. No rust for years. I used Remoil, and I'd developed rust on at least 2 rifles in a matter of weeks.

First off, I believe that bluing is a rusting process, and that's why you got rust at that spot. My favorite rust preventer is RIG grease. I've had guns stored for ten or more years with no evidence of rust after using a"RIG Rag" on them. RIG = Rust Inhibiting Grease

Reblueing is sort of a Rusting Process. It's a black oxide that forms when you reblue something.

When you reblue, you have to make sure you wash the solution off with water. Then apply oil every couple hours for the first 24-48 hours depending on the blueing compound you used. The easiest way is to wrap the part in an oily rag.

I did a hole write-up on reblueing. It should be in the library.
