78 tanker
« on: February 06, 2008, 03:02:56 PM »
Just didn't want to by a 79 gas tube and stock.

Did buy the gas block.. Cut the 78's gas tube back 1 2/3" back, inleted the stock for the gas tube, inletted the stock farther back for the existing barrel band, and glass bedded the block to the stock (using plenty of release agent). Doubt it will shift or move, but will drill the two stock screws later this week...glassed in well, can remove the stock, but there certainly isn't any slack.

Worked.  Once I get Photogucket to accept pictures again, will post one.

Basically have a long stock, long gas tube, QB79.

took long enough...for whatever reason, photobucket refuses my camera and I had to borrow one:

Lessons learned:
1. Going to have to buy wood working tools....doing the inletting by hand with make-shift tools sucks.
2. A tubing cutter works well to scribe an even line around the gas tube...not to cut the tube, but to make a nice deep line to follow while you hack-saw.
3. The dual bands really don't work any better than one...don't do accuracy any harm, and might give a little more vertical support, so they're staying.

Things still to do:
1. get a 4 micron screen filter for the ASA..bulk co2 is sometimes dirty.
2. Change the pin valve on one of the 3.5 tanks to a pin valve with a built in on/off...not enough room for a seperate On/Off.

As you can tell, was having problems getting good bulk fills out in the field. Hard to create the temperature difference needed for a fill when you're three miles out in the swamp.

Looks really sweet Ribbonstone!

"lessons learned" #1 cracks me up.  Do yourself a favor, DO NOT start buying woodworking tools, it's a whole new addiction.  Just ask me, I started with a Dremel tool and ended up with a whole garage full of junk:)

Yeah...but I need something besides an old 1/2" wood chisel and some corner tools made from ground screw drivers.

Rifle shoots well, surprisingly it shoots very well off hand...that weight forward seems to be a real help.
