FM Optics 3-12x40
« on: April 24, 2008, 01:05:26 AM »

Seems I'll try any brand under $50 3- or 4-12 or ?? x32, 40 or 50mm scope from China.

Reason,

A while back I read an article that told of the ever improving Chinese optic grinding procedures and how there will be a point where their quality will be close to if not equal to Japanese yet China priced.

I don't think it's happened yet but over the past year I think I've seen some improvements.

Present case, an FM Optics 3-12x40 ao Scope recently purchased from Sportsman's Guide for Believe it or not, $39.97.

A plain jane looking mildot reticle scope with target turrets and end bell thats a little stiff yet the zoom ring is smooth.

The optics are crystal clear at any range from 10 yards to infinity.  This is a huge improvement in my opinion since in the past I've found cheap scopes are limited to about 75-80% of their capacity That is, for instance , I bought an Discontinued BSA 8-32x50 Huntsman that makes for an excellent 8-20 maybe 25 scope from there things get foggy. So in the past this 3-12x40 scope would have been an excellent 3-9x40 but 9-12 power would have blacked out or just impossible to focus clearly.

I'm not saying this scope is perfect to it's full power but I can see a definite improvement.

Hey Dan, I think allot of the scopes are made in China these days. That scope looks allot like my BSA 3-12X40 scopes. Do you have one of them to compare itwith? Gene

Funny you should say that Gene, I was thinking BSA when I opened it. I don't have an equivalent BSA to compare but the target turret adjustment knobs are identical. But I cant imagine all the scope manufacturers make everything from scratch. Some things must be sourced.
Something I never saw before is on the objective adjustment bell the increments are all in yards except for a >50ft indication. Ever see that?

What is the clarity of the glass? I could use one for my QB at that price.

Thanks

Yes Dan....... I had just bought two new Simmons White Tail Classics, 6.5-20X50 AO Mil Dot scopes and they have 30ft and 50ft increments along with 10yds and up. They are high quality optics and the glass is clear as day. Work fantastic on my new AA S-410 Carbine. Gonna put the other one on my FX Cyclone.

Would you please verify this is an AO scope.  The listing and pictures at Sportsman Guide do not indicate AO.

Thanks

Thanks Gene!  Would you put this scope on a springer or is that asking too much of a bargain scope?

Schoot I really do not know about the FM optics, but ask Dank what he is putting it on. I do know a BSA scope made for air guns is good to go on most all of the springers.  The Simmons Whitetail classic, I would not put on any of my springers.

Hope that helps
