: Crosman Quest 1000's arrived...........
: mikeiniowa September 11, 2008, 10:45:09 AM
I thought I had ordered just the rifles, kind of a surprise when I opened the first box and there was a scope included.....couldn't control myself and tore the first one down and worked it over, the quality has gone up some since I worked on the old B-19. Must have gotten something right doing the work, ran it over the chrony and it shot 909, for all ten shots,,,,mounted the scope and zeroed it in, 1/2 inch groups at 20 yards with the factory trigger, can't wait until Bob's triggers get here then we'll see what it can really do. Almost like these as much as the B-26, just a bit more kick in the firing cycle.....well might as well go break in the trigger so it's ready for the insert when it gets here..........

Keep us in the loop on the Quest tuning Mike. I'm having a Tivar guide spun for one of my many Crosman guns ok well 5 or 6 I guess that would not be many.lol. CDT's trigger is going to knock your socks off you groups are going to be under a dime.(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif)

Hey if you decide to get some .22 800s to tune I may be a buyer..I shot an untuned 1000 once and I gotta say I did like it. It can only get better after a tune up. What are you selling the 1000s for? 800s?
: That's close to what my most recent one did...
: vinceb September 11, 2008, 01:04:26 PM
...velocity-wise, with CPL's. What sort of pellets were you using?

: mikeiniowa September 11, 2008, 01:07:29 PM
Used Gamo Hunters for the velocity test, did get 940 for the Silver Bears, used Gamo Pro Magnums for the accuracy test, once the seal wears in a bit I'll recheck and see where it's at, shot about 50 shots tonight, at 40 yards a pop can doesn't stand a chance.........

The 1000's will be $130.00 shipped tuned and with the GRT-lll trigger installed, I'll have to see if I can get any of the 800's at a good price,

That's an UNBEATABLE price. Keep me informed! I just may have to get one of each.

I have one of Bob's triggers in my old B-19, and have installed them in a bunch of other rifles for customers. they do improve the trigger thats for sure.......

: mikeiniowa September 12, 2008, 12:54:25 PM
I wish I could get the price alittle lower but with the cost of the trigger and shipping I'm doing the tune for about $5........
: All things considered -
: vinceb September 12, 2008, 01:07:47 PM
You could probably go up to $131!

BTW - does that include the scope?
: RE: All things considered -
: mikeiniowa September 12, 2008, 03:24:57 PM
yup scope comes with, I hope Bob's triggers get here, have three of them worked over, all pushing 880 to 900 so far, boy the factory triggers are not all the same, one is hard to pull, one is rough and the last one is so light it's scary, get the GRT's in them and then get the triggers set up, should be good to go.........
: The stock trigger...
: vinceb September 12, 2008, 11:24:42 PM
...is one of the worst aspect of the gun's manufacturing. I have a Phantom (same thing) with a trigger pull that is very reasonable - so much so that I'm not in the least bit tempted to do anything. Others have been terrible. If you ever take a Quest trigger apart you'll notice that they, uh, don't exactly pay a lot of attention to the sear and trip lever stampings...

In any event the $130 for a Quest Combo with the trigger and a once-over by you is more than reasonable.
: Safety check
: BumbleShot September 13, 2008, 07:26:56 AM
I have a Q1k I lube tuned myself.

One thing you should check, is that on mine, the safety lever never engages and blocks the trigger.  I fixed it by milling down the dents on it with a Dremmel.  I had to take a lot of material off of there to get it to work and still have the spring secure.  So be sure to check them all that the safety actually engages!

All the best!

so far so good for the safeties, will have to recheck after installing the new triggers....thanks.

The triggers have arrived, takes about 5 minutes to swap them out if you have done one before, I did three in 20 minutes (I cheated a bit the rifles were out of the boxes and lined up ready to go) no more rough or tough triggers. The rifles are ready to go, if you want one let me know.

I'll take one of the 800's when/if you get em in!
: Storm XT/Quest - Caution
: scottinharwood September 29, 2008, 10:29:48 AM
Got a Crosman Storm XT this July last from Wally World - I wanted a cheap springer for no-pump plinking.  According to Crosman, its a Quest 1000, just diffrent name - same parts.

I fired it straight out of the box looking to break it in over 100 to 200 shots.  Got over 300, but each time I picked it up for a given shot set, there always seemed to be some oil on the transfer port breach seal and it always smoked the first 5-7 shots of each sitting.  Finally Chrony'd it with Crosman Premier heavies, first shot was 1066fps and lots of smoke, then 800, then 925, then 755, then 905, then 700.  This was after I had fired about 300 pellets from it (all CPH's).  It now has a pronounced 'TWANG' and I really think it has been going into detonation each time I picked it up on a given day for shooting and fired it the first few times.

I sent this info to Crosman, they want me to order parts to fix it; I believe at no-charge.

Moral of this story for Quest and Storm owners, look to see if oil is leaking out of the compression chamber before you fire it and if there is some, tear it down and work it over - heck, out of the box, tear it down and work it over before you fire the first shot.

I will tear into this later this week to see if, as I suspect, that the main spring is either broken, or severly twisted.  Also, I would guess the piston seal is a goner and the piston may even be bent - I will let you all know.

I still like the gun and how its made and the scope that came with it - you just have to baby it out of the box which means its not for novice owners I guess.

They are juicy from the factory, don't be to worried about broken parts they are tough, if you need a seal for the piston or a spring I should have both on hand if you have trouble getting them from Crosman.

Dang, Mike! That velocity is almost R1 velocity for about $500.00 less, not even counting the scope. That's a fantastic deal.  Can't afford a tuned Gamo, or an R9. May have to get one of these from you.
How much do they weigh????? I have an R1 that I love. It's a squirrel hammer in .177 if I've ever seen one. Trouble is, it's HEAVY!! Too heavy for carrying around all day. Even my beloved B40 that I bought from you is chunky. Don't get me wrong, I love that B40 and the work you did to it. I wouldn't trade it for all the tea in China. I just need something lighter than my B30/B40/R1 and more powerful than my MP512K. I also want it to shoot as well as my R1.
Is this Quest 1000 the rifle for me? Your opinion means a lot to me, Mike. You more than proved yourself with my B40. Both with the tune you did on it(can you say sweet?), and with the way you conduct business, openly, honestly, and patiently.

Does Jim McCari sell a spring and seal that would be a correct fit for this? I put a McCari tune kit and seal in my B30 and love it. I may have to buy one of his TX200 seals and kits so that when the day finally comes that I wear the originals out, I can slap them in.

Mike:

Thanks for the heads up on parts.  I will be taking the Storm apart this weekend to see whats going on.  With velocities boutncing up and down by 200+fps, I know something is wrong.

Will let you all know after I get it opened up.

If its really bad, I will try to post pics too.

The first time I fired my WalMart bought Storm, I thought I shot a .22 longrifle bullet out of it....it was that loud.  Right after that it started to quiet down.  Still have quite a report now.  I`ve over 1200 shots through her now.  There`s still a film of oil around the breech/loading area....but it haven`t detonated since that first shot.

If the purchaser is lucky....he/she can get a really good air rifle for the money.  Not too heavy/light, jumpy or twisty and pretty accurate.  Likes a variety of pellets.  I got a 3-9X32mm scope (A CenterPoint I believe) that came with it...not the best scope...but haven`t moved or broke yet....knock on wood.

A small Telsa seal works, I put a Tarantula spring in one of the Quests and it worked good, bit of a tic, tic, tic when closing the barrel but a softer cocking and recoil out of the rifle with no loss of power........

mikeiniowa,
Did you sell all your Quests?
I didn't see Quest listed on your website.

I did break down the Storm XT, polished the compression chamber sides and ground down some bits of metal that were sticking out at the bottom.  Also, Crosman sent me a replacement main spring and seal so I used a light coat of moly coat on the seal and in the compression chamber.  I tar'ed that main spring and lubricated the spring guide.  I added two drops of RWS compression chamber oil after reassembling the rifle.  I have been firing it on and off for about 200-pellets, CPH's, and my velocities are holding at 935fps +-5fps.  I had already put the GRT III trigger into it and now this is now one accurate gun.  3/8" ctc at 30 yards (on a non-windy day).
