: Rain stops........ATLAST!
: shadowSeptember 16, 2008, 03:35:29 AM
The last three day's I've spent inside due to the downpour of rain and more rain and this morning the cloud's parted and the sun was out. The B26 was already in my softcase so I was out the door and headed for Squirrel City. I arrived at 7:30am gave a quick wave to my buddy having java in his kitchen and faded into the wood's, the nutter's were already up and working the feeder's over pretty bad. I slowly worked my way around the back of the wood's, the plan was to hit em from a new location and I had my trusty squirrel call. Finding a nice spot behind a large downed tree I settled in and just observed the squirrel's working their way to and from the feeder's and after twenty minutes I started some calling which really got em worked up as I watched one head right for me barking hard. He stopped about twenty yard's out and was peaking out from behind a tree, dropped the caller and waited for his head to peak around the tree with crosshair's waiting. He peaked around again and without haste I sent one to him followed by that sound that we all love to hear. He did try to hang on to the bark for a couple but I shut the power off and he dropped without a struggle. One down and I left him lay until the hunt was over which would be shortly since nutter's scattered and were hiding behind whatever they could find but one stood strong out there just above his fallen buddy chattering for him to get up and with a another nice side profile presenting itself I quickly reloaded which didn't seem to disturb him and again sent one away. Two in the dirt and the wood's were still, wonder why hehehe. I did one more scan for hiding nutter's just in case and grabbed my harvest and headed back out to grab a pic and clean em for my friend, he's really starting to like squirrel. Ed

Looks like a fine meal.
`
Maybe the rain will ease up here soon. Doesn't help with the 'stuff to do' list much either . . .

Thank's Chris I skinned em out for my friend for supper, gonna have to show him how to clean em lol. Ed
those arent the nutters i have around here ed, they look much better and a different color those arent grey squirrells are they? i know there defiantly not red nutters ive seen them before, and congrats on the pair nice shots
Hey Ed, howzabout bringing some of them Yankee squirrels down to GA? I like that orange belly fur. And bring some of those black phase gray squirrels while you're at it. I'm getting tired of looking at the same old grays every season. The nutters down here are kinda scrawny this year. Last year was a dry year with little mast. This year wasn't much better, until mid summer.
Thank's fellow hunter's and these big boy's are the fox squirrel, there everwhere down in my area. I've spotted a couple black phase gray guy's on state hunting land and I really want to get one of em hehehe. There is a ton of em up north along with some gray's which I wouldn't mind tagging one of them also, need a mix of tail's for my collection lol. Ed
I had a squirrel call like that... I wonder if it is still around here? Looks like I will be coming back to Michigan (yippee!) for a little archery deer in October. I usually tuck the 12 ga. along for grouse... now I gotta ponder bringing an AG for squirrels. What a great place to hunt... when it's not raining! Much worse than snow for the old game bag.
Good hunt there Ed. In your hands the B-26 gets the job done and if you can teach your friend to clean 'em you wll have served him well. Before we had deer here in my part of the country, squirrels were the biggest game in town.I've had a life long appeciation for fox and grey squirrels. Thanks for sharing your hunt with us .
Nice. Love the detailed story. Keep 'em coming. -GB

Thank's GTA Hunter's, the fella holding the call is the one who fell victim to it. The least I could do was let him hold it lol. Ed

Yea, sometimes the call will really get em "stirred up"!! He He!! (I have the exact same call) Great story Ed. Everytime I take the time to one finger type a story of my hunt,,,the dam picture covers most of it,, I have givin up on it. Glad the rain finally let up for Ya Buddy,, go get em!! Tim.
