How often do the thread update notifications go out?

If you have your controle panel set to get response to all your posts then you should get all of the replies against your posts. Depending on how busy or if the smtp and pop servers at each end are up and running. Replies to post will usually stay in server system for 72 hours and then get dropped.

Depends on how fast the mail service sends the notification to your mail service. Generally just a few minutes

they can take a long time for me.. I read it on the site before the update shows.

hmmm, I have not heard this from any other member Ed. Hard to determine which mail service is messing up..
