: Night Hunt Comin Up
: longislandhunter September 26, 2008, 12:54:47 AM
Well,,, it's official,,,, a masked bandit has discovered my garbage cans and last night he ate like a king.  After dining he also left garbage strewn all over my deck and therein lies the problem,,,,,, for him    :)

Kinda of funny,,,, yesterday I spent some time in the workshop creating and installing a laser/light combo on my .22 Talon,,,  I wasn't sure how much I'd use it but now I'll get to use it tonight  :)

Here's a question,,,,, besides regular household garbage what's the best bait for a raccoon????   I guess this raccoon doesn't know that I just retired and all the time in the world to wait him out   HEHE  :)

Hopefully a follow up story and pics to come.........

I was going to say fish, but fatback was on it. Used to camp and fish all the time, and nothing drew the 'coons like salmon heads. Or walleyes, or perchies, don't think the species mattered!

I agree canned or dry cheap cat or dog food and just about anything that they can get their little hands on. Good luck buddy and will be looking for a Raccoon post from you. I'm headed out tonight myself, who knows what the night will bring. Watch em though they have great night vision, smell and hearing and I do wear my camo at night also, be the bush hehehe. Ed

Jeff,

Man if anyone needs to get a videocamera attached to his rifle, its you! You get more game than anybody, it'd be fun just to see how you do it. Good luck,

BPH

Ya gonna eat that coon or what?  Maybe you can tan it's hide and make a coonskin hat.

Just a quick update on the hunt,,,,,   been on the lookout every night so far with the Talon ready to go however this is one smart raccoon.  NO sign of him anywhere although the weather has been really rainy and windy so I'm just hoping he's laying low until the weather is nicer and he gets the midnight munchies  :)

Be patient Jeff, he 'll come.  They usually don't get out much unless it's nice out.  They also have a large area they patrol.  You can be sure he has discovered several other garbage cans besides yours, so he 's just making his rounds.  He 'll come around to yours eventually.

When I had a Deli, I used to talk to the other shop owners around my store.  I had a beer distributor on the left, a fish retail/market on the right (seperate buildings), and a gas station 250-300ft on either side.  When I had the racoon problem with them getting into my dumpster, I 'd talk to the other guys, and realized that they were being raided the nights I didn't see the bandits.  No doubt the fish market attracted them.  Racoons have great memory so once they 've tasted your garbage, they 'll keep coming back for more.

I was thinking of setting up my Condor for night hunting too because I 'm not able to get the possom that 's been coming around with just the outdoor lights.  I need to get out there and set a trap.  I also have a skunk or two but those give me the creeps :)  They can walk straight to you very quietly before they realize what's in front of them..
Looking forward to your pics!

Try some wet gravy-train dog food next to the garbage cans!!! Make it with warm water so the scent will be irresistable HeHeHeHe. Then zap his @$$! tjk

Plus, skunks are big rabies carriers. Possums aren't.  We have a problem with feral cats and we trap them in a cage trap for animal control to haul off. Problem is, the possums keep getting in the trap. They sure can be hard to convince to leave, once you open the trap. Not the brightest bulb in the fixture.

Sardines and canned mackerel will attract every cat, coon, and possum in the county. Very effective bait.

Ok this will bring him and his other friends out Jeff..:) Buy a pound of good old Limburger Cheese. Let it sit out in the sun and you should have quite a lot of furry guys around soon..:)

What do racoons taste like?  I figure, like many higher tier predators, they probably taste a bit nasty?  You wrap them in bacon?  Marinade? Pressure cook?

You'd get a nice pelt, though.

I have one in the freezer that I haven't prepared yet,,, but if I can nail the one that's been raiding my backyard I'll probably bar-b-Q him fairly quick and will let ya know what they taste like.  I'm told they are very good.

I forgot to mention that coyotes will come to the stinkfish, as well.
