I am so fond of my BSA rifles that any time I get a peek at another I am sorely tempted to bring it home. My local Sportsman's Warehouse had another BSA languishing on the racks, crying out to me for a good home. Well, I had resisted the plea of this English shooter for as long as I could. My birthday is later this month so I treated myself to a present a bit early, (like that has never happened before....).
I brought my new BSA Sportsman HV in .22 home today. This is a carbine sized rifle at 37.5" in OAL. The ergonomics of these BSA carbines are spot on for me, and like the two others I own the Sportsman is quick to shoulder and so pointable. The Sportsman is a magazine fed, 10 shot, 30 FPE .22 air rifle. I've never been one for the really fast air guns, but a few rounds with tough crows convinced me I needed a rifle with a tad more zip.
I got the rifle cleaned up, cleaned the barrel and then I mounted one of my new Bushnell Trophy 4-12 x 40 scopes on it.
The rifle had a partial charge in the reservoir, was probably down to 1500 psi or so. I fully charged the reservoir with my pump, it took about 70 strokes to bring it up to just over 220 BAR. 232 BAR is the max fill pressure for this rifle, but I have had good success with even power and shot strings at 220 BAR with my Ultra.
One 10 shot magazine is all it took to get the Sportsman sighted in with BSA Wolverines (JSB Exacts 15.9 gr). Like my Ultra, the Sportsman is so easy to shoot one ragged hole groups with.
Here are a few photos of the new Dark Side lass and one photo of all my BSA rifles together for comparision:

Stephanie that is a good looking rifle for sure . It took you a while to enter the dark side but it did not take you long to get to the count of two . I know what you mean about that multi shoot thing . Last night at the range a friend let me shoot his FX and as fast as you pull the trigger it fires off a round . I had never thought about a multi shoot till then . But I will be strong and resist the desire . And happy birthday to you early as well Marvin
-
Very nice, Stephanie. The BSA carbines suit you well. Can you hunt grackles all winter in Colorado?
-
Stephanie, now that's what I call self-control..LOL! Beautifull rifle & terrific scope, can't beat that combo,,,,BSA/BUSHNELL...I luv them trophies....ENJOY THAT NEW BRIT BEAUTY!!!!!
-
Hey Buddy, you are two up on me now..:) I have been eye ballin the Ultra Multi Shot for a while now in .177, and now I know how it should look next to my BSA Lightning XL..:) So now you went and got another Dark Sider. Will you adopt me Peak.. hehe
Beautifu threesome buddy. And thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the early B-day wish Marvin. The ability for a quick follow up shot is really nice. The multi-shot BSAs are not semi auto, you do have to cock the action between each shot, but it can be done really quickly. I really like John Bowkett's Micro Movement Cocking action design.
-
I am very fond of the BSA carbines Tommy. The Grackles are a migratory bird and head to southern climes for the winter. I haven't seen any Grackles for a bit, but then again they seemed to get a bit thin in my neighborhood anyway........
-
Thanks Joe. I do love my 'Beezers.'
-
Gene, I'd adopt you, but I don't know where we could find room for all your sweet rifles in my little house. I think you would really like the Ultra Multi-Shot...... Imagine a PCP Lighting with quick follow up shots. :)
-
Peak I think you need at least one B3 in that stable lol. Ed
-
Ed you may be right, but I'm not sure I'm ready to take my shooting to that next level. I think I better wait a couple of years before I get that serious about shooting. :)
-
Wow Stephanie, congrats on the new shooter!!! I am sure you will love the HV, I love mine...the accuracy is unbeatable.. when I bring it out all the critters in my neighborhood cringe :)
-
Thanks Chris. The BSA rifles are sweet shooters for sure. The Sportsman sure does pack a whallop!
-
yes it sure does, pack the wallop!!... It's my most powerful air rifle, that is until my Condor arrives :) (should be here bye the middle of the week) With the pointed 32 grain Eun jins, the HV is getting a little over 42 Ft lbs. I have it sighted in right now with kodiaks.. the kodiaks are giving me 37.4 Ft lbs.
-
WOW Stephanie !
You certainly have the most beautiful air rifle collection that I have ever seen. You definitely have an eye for airguns !
I love your selections, while I do not endorse the DARK SIDE, you have the chosen the most beautiful Ladies to be bought.
Congratulations, and have a Very Happy Birthday, 27, isn't it ?
Your airgun admirer, still green with envy,
Bill
-
Why yes Bill I am going to be 27 (again)...... I'm very lucky in that I have had the opportunity to shoot and own some very sweet air rifles.
-
Well Stephanie, I was looking at your babies more than I was reading your post..:) So you must be a Scorpio like me..:) No wonder I like German Ladies so much..:) Well Happy B-Day young lady..:) Bill could not be far off on your years girl..:)

Wow, your stable of BSAs are beautiful!!! How's the noise level of the Sporter HV compared to the Ultra?

Wow, your stable of BSAs are beautiful!!! How's the noise level of the Sporter HV compared to the Ultra?
Thats what I was wondering also, interesting to see they are almost exactly the same length. I have been eying the Ultra Multi for some time, but if the Sportsman HV isn't much louder, that would be attractive as well.
-
Stan and Allen, the Sportsman HV has an un-shrouded, un-moderated barrel. On this 30 + FPE .22 that makes for a bit of noise. Actually it is nearly as loud as a .22 short powderburner. The barrel end is threaded with 1/2" UNF thread for "accessories." My Ultra has the BSA "SAS" moderator on it. The full size SAS moderator is 6" long and nearly 1.25" in diam., it is quite effective. My Ultra is very, very neighborhood friendly.
PS: The Sportsman HV is basically an unregulated Hornet. The Sportsman HV was a a proprietary model built by BSA for AoA and only sold through Sportsman Warehouse stores. This model has been discontinued.
-
Thanks Steph for the info. Yeah, accessories....that`s a nice word for it.....something for flashlight and laser holders. ;o)
-
Ahh, thats exactly what I needed to know. I think the Ultra may be the one....
-
Thanks for the photos Stephanie. A nice set you have there. 30FPE in .22 must make the HV a real thumper! I must take a photo of my latest Beeza. Many happy returns for later in the month.
regards,
Alan :)
-
Thanks for good the wishes Alan. The Sportsman HV is a genuine thumper in an air rifle! I'd love to see a photo of your new Beezer.

Peak Chick:
Thats a really good looing piece.
Since you are deffinitely a BSA advocate, what do you think of the Super Ten Mk III? I was thinking of getting one from Arizona Airguns but have not yet committed? Am I right in assuming that these are pressure regulated air guns for shot to shot velocity consistency? And is the claim of 30ft-pounds in 0.22 a sound one? I have the cash, and the bug is really biting hard this time. I already have an AA S400 Xtra, a B51 and a Discovery.
Thanks
Scott

Scott, I am, admittedly, a huge BSA air rifle fan. I have not shot a Super Ten, but have done a lot of research on them. The Super Ten does develop good power, in the 30 fpe range in a .22. Yes, the Super Ten is a regulated rifle, and from what I have read, it works well. I have read of typical BSA accuracy with the Super Ten, which means very high accuracy. The only few less than positives I have heard from Super Ten owners has been that the design is somewhat front end heavy. The Super Ten uses a "buddy Bottle" air reservoir. The bottle has to be removed from the rifle and I have heard that some folks have had problems with resealing at the O-ring that seals the bottle to the rifle. I have also heard the keeping the O-ring on the bottle clean and lubed lightly with diver's silicone grease can help with, or elminate the sealing problem.
-
Thank you,
Is there an alternative you would recommend?

I wouldn't necessarly give up ona Super Ten. Call AoA and chat with them about it. As I understand, there is a new version of the Super Ten coming out shortly, no real time frame though. The Scorpion gets you the ten shot mag and is available in rifle and carbine with the BSA mod., also in a shrouded version. The Scorpion is a more traditional bolt design, and is not regulated. My Ultra carbine and Sportsman are not regulated, but they do have John Bowkett's good valve desing and are very consistent for 30 shots or so. If you can do with out the ten shot mag, the Lonestar is a very powerful rifle available in .22 and .25. The Lonestar is not regulated and uses the MMC cocking system I like so much, it is also a bargain. I see on AoA's site they have a used Sportsman HV in .22 for sale, looks like a good buy. Good luck!
