: This time next week!
: JohnC November 03, 2008, 05:14:08 AM
I'm making my first trip down the ranch next weekend, as Squirell season opens here on the 8th. I'll be camping down there from Thursday.

So yesterday I sat in my back yard for a little practice shooting. I have a small back yard, so 10yds is as far as I can sight in, but it's better then nothing. When I do my part the B26 it will shoot some nice clover leaf groups.

So as I'm sitting plinking away, I hear the distintive bark of a squirrel, and there on a nearby palm tree, looking down at me and barking with all his might is a young grey, and he is just going off. I rasied the rifle to my eye, and settled the crosshairs right over his head, and he was about as close to 10yds as he could be from me. Of course I didn't shoot but it was quite the rush seeing the tree rat in the crosshairs.

This continued on through out the aftermoon, it was as if the local population of squirrels, decided to see what all the noise was about! I had at keast 4 different nutters in my scopes at different times. Everyone with a perfect backstop behind them.

Talk about temptation!

Of course next week, I'm sure none will be around, but if they are I think the B26 and I are going to have a lot of fun thinning out their numbers and hopefully put an end to their destruction on my property. I'll hopefully get a nice supply of squirrel tails too, for tying up some flies!

I'll keep you guys posted!!

You have more will power than I do John!  hehe.  I know what it's like.  I managed to only shoot 1 or 2 squirrels off-season this year, but that was only because there were plenty of Groundhogs to shoot on my property and the occasional Starling or Grackle.  Had it not been for the g-hogs, I don't know how long I would have held out :)

Looking forward to all your pics!
Harry

Good luck John and it sound's like the squirrels around your yard haven't tasted lead yet, brave little buggers. I have several that sneak to my feeder's but they know me , look at that squirrel run lol. Ed

It took a lot of will power that's for sure, but with only a week to go, I thought I'd let them have their moment. I'm hoping to dispatch quite a few though, they create a lot of damage. Tearing up roof shingles, digging out newly planted bulbs, as well as their constant raiding of my bird feeder.

So hopefully I'll have some pics to share soon.

I'm really looking forward to next weekend, I haven't hunted for close on 20 years now.

The ranch I'm heading to is 65 acres, unfarmed just some grazing cattle, nicely wooded in areas too, with Live Oaks, so lots of acorns to support the population.

Last timeI was there, I saw quite a few doves and crows too, so hopefully I'll have quite the gamut of varmints to persue!

I've never cooked or cleaned a squirrel, but they can't be all that different to a rabbit, right?

You`re too gentle.....  If any pest is ruining or tearing up my property....they`ll meet Mr. Pellet!!!!!  Any yep, cleaning and cooking a squirrel is similar to a bunny.
