I had this idea that I was going to rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it.
The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.
I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it.
After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up, 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me.
I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation.
I took a step towards it...it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope and then received an education. The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.
That deer EXPLODED.
The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer-- no chance.
That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined.
The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals. A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.
I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual.
Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in, so I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand...kind of like a squeeze chute.
I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.
Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist.
Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite y ou and then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head, almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.
The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective. It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds.
I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose. That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.
Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp. I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -- like a horse --strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.
This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run.
The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.
Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.
I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away.
So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope to sort of even the odds

Great story! It was like a novel I couldt stop reading!... now all impresions behind, Im glad you got away safely. I would have never imagined that deer was capable of such things.. even though I have tamed small cows trying to apply some sort of jiu jit su maneuvers combined with all my strength I dont think that I will try to go on a hand to hand sparr with any animal heavier than 215 lbs the same weight I have.
once again Im glad you could get away and enlighten us with such an amazing story
one more thing.. hows you hand?? any severe damage to the ligaments?

It's a joke!! Although I was hoping little breaux would actually try it so I could watch the show. You know how older brothers treat their little brothers......
I could just imagin having to jump in at the last possible moment, just before a fatality, and rescue the deer.......

That is funny !!! I was a witness to true life event that was very similar, except instead of a rope it involved a knife. I watched from the safety of my tree stand as a "hunter" pulled out his knife and jumped on the back of a deer that his son had chased into a chain link fence. The large buck got his horns stuck in the fence and the "hunter" dropped his bow, pulled out his knife, jumped on top of the buck and proceeded to try and stab it to death.
Well, he never did get the chance to stab it cause the terrified animal bucked him off and kicked the stuffings outa him. The buck eventually got free from the fence and darted off to safety leaving the idiot hunter dazed and bleeding. I got down out of my tree stand and asked him why he chose to throw down his bow and try to knife it to death instead of just standing back a few feet and sending an arrow into it,,, he just gave me a blank stare and said "I really don't know"... I never forgot that scene... What an idiot... :)

LOL always watch "when animals ATTACK! " vid's before attempting to rope any wild critter hehehe. There's always someone out there who thinks they got the edge over wild critter's until there getting dragged behind them lol. Ed

I wonder just HOW that idiot thought the leopard would react to being poked with a big stick? We had one of those pick up a feral cat one time. Animal control dropped off the trap, we baited it, caught it, and called them to get it. The idiot starts poking it repeatedly after getting it in the back of the truck. Some people just don't damned think

A good friend of mine shot a deer once (25 Years ago) and after the deer was down he walked up to it realizing he had shot a nice little buck with about 12" spikes; he then proceeded to examine it when all of a sudden the deer jumped up and reared his head back sinking one of those spikes deep into his thigh narrowly missing the femoral artery, he nearly bled to death sitting on the ground next to the deer that had "died again". He took off his shirt and began to apply pressure and in the nick of time my uncle and cousin found him and rushed him to the emergency room.......he made a full recovery but had to push in the clutch on his pick up truck with his cane to shift gears for quite some time after that..........TRUE STORY

That was a hoot Randall..:) And I was counting the stitches up at emergency room costs at $68.00 per stitch and I counted well over 100 stitches. ..:) not to mention the emergency room visit at $3000.00. Don't forget the X Rays which would of put another $1500.00 on top of that. And I understand now they charge for gauze and cotton at a healthy price as well.. Great though that you were just foolin roun wiff us.. Gene

That was awesome Randall! I haven't laughed like this in quite a while! :)
Towards the end I started suspecting that this was a joke, because after all one had been through, like dragged around and bitten by a deer, a blow to the back of the head would have surely had this person hospitalized with a serious concussion if not fatally wounded, and not typing about it in a forum on line... at least not for a couple of weeks.
Great story for a good laugh! I should send it to some of my friends.

Very funny story.....as another poster mentioned earlier...read it a few months ago. But it's true....don't try to pick up or touch a wild animal....even something small as a squirrel or rabbit....they'll bite and scratch you bad!!!!

Hey Randal.... that had me going all right.
In the spirit of things - a true story - I was grumpy with the world and decided to go out fishing on my own .One thing led to another and before i knew it, it was dark....anyhow I cast a popper under some pandanas and began to bloop it in when all of a sudden the water exploded and I thought i had a good Barra, but was wrong.
A crocodile had been lurking in the shaddows and nailed my popper....well a while later I had it at my boat and i could see that the leader line was wrapped around its snout so i held the line up and as it did not look too big i decided to flip it in the boat to free it from the line....BUT when it hit the floor of the boat it somehow became free all by itself......it was very angry and a bit bigger than i first thought....Growling it came charging at me and backed me up against the motor and sat there with its mouth open making menacing noises.
I was in a spot as I was not going to give up my boat and jump in the water as I had seen one about 4.5 meters earlier that afternoon. Anyhow i was able to make it past it by running over the gunnels and made it to the ancor well. I then got the ancor rope,esky and an oar and managed to catch it. I gripped over its snout and it then went all floppy and compliant ( they can close their mouths with great force but it is not too hard to hold ones mouth shut..small ones anyway). I then set up my camera on self time got a couple of photos freed it from the lure and then returned him unharmed to the water and watched him swim off.....I think we both learnt a lesson.
I know it was not an airgun story but as i have no rats at the moment I just thought i would post it.

NO Crocks for me thanks. Hey Jeff, I went to school with a guy that did a similar thing with a knife. He'd shot a doe and thought she was dead. He had begun to roll her over to start field dressing her and up she came. The only thing he could think to do was jump on her back and try to sink his knife between her shoulder blades. Well this did nothing but give him a saddle horn to hold on to. She carried him about twenty yards in a flipping panic before she threw him off and ran off to die. My buddy Richard helped him track the blood until they finally found her about an hour later. The guy that knifed her gave her a 'just in case' shot and then retrieved his knife. Had it been a buck, it may have become a hospital story. Randall, I couldn't help but laugh. I figured you had lost your marbles to try something like that.

A smaller one chomped a few holes through my hand a while back...you think i would have learned my lesson. Anyhow l I have been quietened down since the birth of my son. I am a bit house bound for a while, which has been a bit hard as I am an adventurous fellow by nature. My airgun is my sanity at the moment (Oh and I really enjoy reading all the adventures on this page too). I am not complaining though as it wont be too long until I have a sidekick to tag along with me.

While I was in high school in central Texas, I worked part time riding fence and doctoring sick livestock on the ranch next to ours. One day I found a small buck that had gotten his leg caught trying to jump a fence. I was about 17 years old and didn't know better, so I got my rope on him (my first mistake) and then got his leg out of the fence (my second mistake). Once loose the deer started at me with his hooves. I wasn't injured but my new Levi jeans were cut badly. I did manage to get him hog tied and took him to a vet who fixed up his leg. I will never forget how cleanly his hooves sliced up my new jeans. I will never try that again.

When I was a boy, I hunted on Ft. Eustis in Virginia. The Game Warden there found two fawns one year and he raised them in a pen. The buck we named "Buttons". He grew up and after five or six years he was a beautiful animal. One night a couple of idiots decided that they would let him go and shoot him. He kicked the stupidity out of them and ran off. Sadly he ran into the on post housing area and wound up in someone's living room. He had jumped through a sliding patio door. Well, he destroyed the room and furniture and broke a couple of legs. The MPs had to put him down.
Truth is a *_*_*_*_*_*ed off deer can kill you.
