: Pellet Identity Table
: Remo November 22, 2008, 12:40:45 AM
I often read here that a particular pellet such as JSB Exacts are marketed under other brand names.  I think in one post here an equivalent name was BSA Wolverines.

I have 2 questions:

1)  How is such information as to pellet equivalency obtained and should we just accept the accuracy of such statements?

2) Would an online chart crossreferencing the various pellets and their marketing names be helpful to members?

Remo:
I don't know of any graphic pellet ID charts.  There are pellet weight charts in the library.  Visually, the Wolverines and the JSB Exacts are the same, though.  PeakChick, who is an authoritative repository of all air gun knowledge, says they are the same and I believe her.

I have found that you can't always trust the weights posted on the charts in the library, though.  For example, the weights of the .20 Beeman lasers given were way off from what I weighed on a couple of tins I bought.  This may be a variance in manufacturing, though.  I notice that many pellet's packaging will not even list a pellet weight these days.

I'm sure that my idea was not well explained.  I think it might be helpful if we were able to cross reference all the different brand names under which a particular pellet is sold.  The example table below indicates that JSB Exacts and BSA Wolverines are equivalent pellets.

 JSB Exacts
Crosman Premiers
 BSA Wolverines
JSB Exacts
 ---  X
 Crosman Premiers

 BSA Wolverines
 X  ---

If the various members of GTA contributed, I bet we could get an useful cross reference table up in the Library in short order.  Does this idea make sense?

Dave,

Thanks for the input.  I will update the example table in my prior post with your comments.  Are benjy discos round head pellets? Wadcutters? Hollowpoints?  .22 vs .177?  I just don't want to assume which type of pellet you mean.

I think the Benji Discos are actually Crosman Premier Heavies since the .177 is 10.5 grain, dunno 'bout the .22.  Benjamin Diablos .22 appear to be Crosman Premiers also, dunno about .177's.  Daisy wadcutters are the same as fishing weights once you melt 'em down:)

Dan,

Thanks for joining in. We'll have to open "Fishing Gate" for the Daisy fans!:)

I'm not sure of the best way to start the table and keep it updated on the GTA site.  Editing a sticky message might be possible, but likely not too convenient if we actually start to get a bunch of info.  I was thinking about putting it into an Excel spreadsheet for convenience sake, but I don't know how to share that with the GTA.

Any advice from folks who know about this stuff?

Eric

yeah...the .177 Daisy wadcutters are a little to small and don't fit well in any of my guns. But the .22 Daisy Wadcutters are excellent in my low/medium power airguns...like my .22 AK47 B3, .22 B4, and .22 HB22.

Yeah, I find that really annoying how the tins don't show the weight.

I have run across a few synonyms:

JSB Exact=
AOA FT
FX pellets
BSA Wolverines

JSB Stratton=
AA Hunter

H&N Barracuda Match=
Bisley magnum
Beeman Kodiak

(AA Diabolo Fields are made by JSB, but are most definitely not the same pellet. They look alike but are off a different Die)

(Only AA Diabolo Fields, JSB Exacts, FX pellets, AOA FT's come in varying head sizes. BSA Wolverine  pellets do not have head sizes marked on the reverse of the tins.) I think JSB Exact has the largest range of head size available.

A JSB made pellet, with the head size matched to a particular barrel, launched at its optimum speed is worth its weight in gold (medals)...lol.

cheers

Eric, I can always convert a Excel to PDF if you like. That way most all can view the chart and it is updatable. Just send me a revised edition of the chart each time you want to update it and I will convert and place it in the GTA Library. Thanks for your efforts.

Eric,  so far all of the folks here that have replied with re-label pellets have been factual.
For example; the Benji pellets are in fact Crosmans, as are Remington pellets.  The can even be found on Crosman's web site.
Putting together a chart like you seek would take an individual hours of time to scrape up the info and put it in a chart.
I have some re-label pellets myself, that's how how I know what they are.  I have some Benjamins and AoA'a that are JSB's.  AoA will attest to it.
I have also seen some of which you seek and it would take some searching to find it for you.
I'm in no way implying that I'm a pellet swami.  Hth.

*Kev* in UK is already on the case. It would be better to add to the existing resource than start a new one.

That is some great info Adam, and thanks once again for contrbuting. How are things in NZ?

Things here in NZ are pretty grim at the moment with the recession hitting jobs hard. The All Blacks are on a losing streak and it has been a cold Winter for us.

On the bright side, I am off to the FT World Champs in South Africa in a couple of weeks. Two of us are going as a NZ team for the first time. Some thanks to Bob's Agent for the triggers here in NZ, http://www.nzhunter.com for sponsorship, which will be very helpful. I was also sponsored the plane fare by another outstanding individual.

So I am off to rub elbows with the big names in the sport shortly Keep an eye out on the usual  sites for us, and cross your fingers, toes and other extremities for us.

Always a pleasure being on the GTA. It really is a great place to be.

Thanks for the info.  Its fascinating how this thread sat untouched for so long.  I agree with your assessment of the time involved, and considering the lack of interest, it's not time that I'm going to invest.

I've just started sectioning JSBs and various other pellets that are variants of the JSB to add to my Pellet database. So far all I've done is found more questions about the pellets lol. There seems to be variations from batch to batch and the internal profile varies with head size.

I've emailed Pavel at JSB with some questions which hopefully he will be able to answer.

The Pellet Identity Database is now a link in the GTA Library.
