General Discussion To Gateway To Airguns => Hunting Gate => : Kingspear November 26, 2008, 04:00:39 AM

Well I was told many a time it couldn't be done but I knew it could and I did. Shot was from 25yards with my GAMO Whisper Air Rifle with Centerpoint scope. I was shooting a Predator Polymag pellet .177 (best pellet in the world in my opinion). I shot him right between the eyes as you can see in the photos (sorry they are camera photos so not so crisp). I must say that I do not by any means recommend hunting Coyotes with a .177 air rifle as most shots will not be perfect and just hurt and leave them to die slow. In my case I had no other choice because of the area where this Coyote resided is very urban in close proximity to neighbors. This also was not a hunt, it had nothing to do with sportsmanship. All it had to do with was exterminating a problem. I have been after this Coyote for about 3 months and the only reason I killed him was because he killed a loyal family dog and I wasn't going to let that one slide. When he killed Puffy (our dog) my sister and neighbors said it sounded like a a person being killed from him screaming in pain so I was upset to say the least escpecially since Puffy's death was very long and painful. Puffy was killed at 9AM full on day while I was at work while he was playing in our fenced back yard. I also didn't want it to happen again to our other dog. The only reason I am saying this is because I want to make it a point not to encourage hunting coyote's with air rifles and to show my reason for doing it. I also felt in my situation an Air Rifle was better than a bow. Oh and before some coyote lovers come and harrass me and say I should've called the humain society, I did, they told me to shout and throw rocks at it if it came around, lame.
Well today I was able to put the coyote to rest and I shot him right between the eyes and he dropped like a ton of bricks without a twitch. He was a nice big healthy male. I'm sure he was living good eating backyard pets.
-
Well placed shot. Had to be done. "shout and throw rocks at it" The Humane Sociey obviously has no clue that a determinded coyote raised in that kind of environment has little fear for people, and are opportunistic predators of domestic pets. That one would've gotten another pet in your neighborhood sooner or later.
-
NICE SHOT!!! You may be the first person to kill a Coyote with a .177 Springer!!
Good job and sorry to hear about Puffy. That really stinks. You did the right thing. This pesty critter was eating your pets so you took care of the problem when the town wouldn't. I commend you for it and your marksmaship!
Wow and at 25yds no less.. What velocity #'s does your Whisper get out of the muzzle btw? Do I have your permission to post these pics in a PCP forum, and show them that it's not about power but shot placement?
I would never say "no you can't take a Coyote with a .177 Springer". I would say "sure you can if you can place it right between the eyes" if you asked me.. and you did! Again great job and thanks for sharing the pics.
BTW, where were you when you took the shot? Inside the house? from a window? Did you put bait out in your back yard to lure him in? I 'd like to know because we have many Coyotes around here too and it's now hunting season so I wouldn't mind bagging one in my back yard, and it would be all legal and everything.
thanks
Harry

Good for you! You did the right thing and you did it the right way in my opinion. Congratulations for a sportsman-like job!
-
I baited him. He is not very afraid of people. Go ahead and show the PCP guys. Thanks for kind words.
-
BTW I'm not sure the velocity #'s but it is a GAMO Whisper with the Venturi Air Ram. I'm pretty sure its getting around what they advertise.
-
Ephraim, Good for you SIR! Nice shot and no justification needed. Now THATS a Good Coyote.
-
u did what was right for u your children and neighbors cause if that coyote kept coming back, it would have been a matter of time before he would of hunted.those wild animals attack whenever and wherever there r no boundries for hunger.THAT THING WAS BIG LIKE THE SIZE OF A MEDIUM SIZE DOG I COULD HAVE NEVER NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE.GREAT SHOT
-
Fantastic and accurate shot at that coyote. It actually looks alot like a German Sherpard....except it`s snout is more pointy.
-
Great shooting! I wouldn't have even thought it was possible, at least not with a springer. I'm sure the Preditor pellet made it possible. The skull of a coyote is pretty thick. Most pellets being pure lead would mushroom, but clearly that polymer tip got penetration. Of course, regardless of what you shoot with, placement is key. You obviously did your part.
-
I also contribute the kill to the Predator Pellet.
-
NICE SHOT !!! It's all about shot placement . kirby
-
Fuse Box!!! My Whisper loves the Predators too. No skin off my back, nice shot. I don't know how you threw that .177 pellet at him fast enough to make it through the skull. That is a mighty small rock. Congrats on avenging your dogs passing. Sorry about though.

Your post was very well done Ephraim, and I for one love my dogs very much. Great shot that brought him down as well. Your neighborhood is safe until the next one comes around.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Great Post

Holy smokes, dude! You ROCK! Very nice shot placement and for all I've heard of not being able to put one down with a .177 I think you've turned the tables. Great shooting!

I'm sittin here going cooool!!! I knew all along that they would, even tho some say no.. the polymag is a bone crushing load thats got the penatration capabilities to do the deed. You did the neighborhood a big favor with that well placed shot..
Thats why we all strive for perfection shot after shot, poking holes in paper .. Just for the moment you just had..
I am never satisfied unless I'm 1 holin or close and I think most here are the same.. when the chance comes we are ready... Great shootin bro.....

I think the coice of using an air rifle, especially the Whisper was well thought out. I lost a dog to coyotes several years ago and have friends from church that had a dog nearly killed in their back yard by a coyote. It's open season year round. We are getting an influx of armadillos here in Georgia and they are not indiginous either so again it is open season year round.
-
A well placed shot, indeed, sir. Sorry about your dog. But watch out. J. Quest may drop by to see you with his new night vision scope to see if he can help out with a little night time coyote hunting. Yip yip yip yoooooooooooooooo, etc.
-
Tommy its gettin dark here in Texas now. I'm fixin to go out back and get some night shots in.. Its a different world at night and I need to master it. I'm shootin 1 inch groups now at 22 yds and i need to tighten it up a tad.....
-
You still got the TX 200 MkIII scoped or have you switched over to the darker-dark side with the new AR 410?
-
-very sorry to hear about your dog. Great shot! Those predators are great pellets, too.
-
TOMMY I just shot 25 rounds out back.. Yes the tx 200 .22 is the weapon of choice... 5 superdomes did real well, 5 predator held a good group but were 1" low. 5 crow mags were a little wild and then, 5 bear cubs were the best of the bunch...
I can't fill my AA S410C yet cuz , cuz ain't sent my fill valve out yet. I need to cuz him... long weekend and no PCP for me......
-
Real bum-air, cuz you could be shooting the AA410. But I didn't intend to hi-jack the coyote thread. Sorry.
-
Air guns are capable of dropping big game with shot placement and the right pellet for the job, you had the combo. GREAT!!!!!!!!! SHOT PLACEMENT and pic's. Very impressive and my hat's off to you for such a fine trophy and for the elimination of a animal the was endangering and killing family pet's. Yote's do become unafraid of human's and pet's when living in area's such as yours and folk's dogs and cat's come up missing.:( Again FANTASTIC HUNT! and what a boost for the Hunting Gate. Ed
-
I concur with Ed.. sorry for the high jack.. Its your moment bro and its a sweet moment ta boot...
great shootin and great story!!!!!

You made a good coyote out of that one. I have no doubt that you can make that kill. When I was about 15, I was in my front yard shooting my Crosman 2100. A large chow mix had gotten into our fenced in back yard and was attacking one of our cocker spaniels. I tried to run it off but it stood facing me, bared it's teeth at me, and growled at me. I pumped her up to 10 and loaded a Crosman Copperhead pellet (the only kind available at the local Wal Mart back then). I put the front sight right between it's eyes and fired. It turned tail and ran about 50 feet into the wooded lot next door before it dropped dead. Granted I was only about 8 feet from it, but my gun was less powerful than yours, my pellet was a wadcutter, AND the dog was a lot bigger than a coyote. It was a HUGE dog. It's owners let it run loose all the time and got snotty with us when we told them they needed to keep it in their own damned yard.
Well, it never got loose again. They came around about a week later, asking if we'd seen it. They had been out of town on vacation when it happened, and had just let it run loose.
Sucked for them.
These little pellets have a lot more penetration than you'd think.
-
Had a yote who was killing all the quail in my yard. Gamo 440 at 25 yards. Did the job.
-
I wouldn't thought it possable with a 1.77 springer.
Got that wrong didn't I.
Hummm wounder if I can take a wild goat with a pcp.
-
Well done mate, i was going to do a post asking about the possibility of taking feral cats with my .177 gamo 440 at 20 yrds with polymags.......I don't think it is such a cazy idea anymore with good shot placement. Real problem where I am. But all that aside great shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rob
PS..... That looks like a good pelt....did you keep it??

Nice shot! I am just wondering about the chances one has to take with such a shot. I mean, considering the human factor involved, a wrong shot would have left the animal withering in pain with a pellet in his head. Such animals survive at times (yes, they are tough) and go mad, biting, killing anything they come across. Not a chance I would wanna take.

That's a choice that each hunter must make when dealing with a situation like this. Skill, shot placement, shooter and ammo used all come into play and all can be right on. All that's left is the choice of the hunter to pull the trigger or not and then to deal with the consequences of doing so. I myself would have made the same choice as this hunter and do everything within my power to do it successfully, the yote took something from them and he returned the favor......successfully. Ed

I'am new to this forum and my wife can't get me away from the computer. Great shot! Last month my wifes cat was half eaten by a surburban coyote. Made her cry for a week. Found her (the cat) in a ditch behind the house with just a head and one forearm. Collar still on her. Very sad. I live in Tucson Arizona where the coyotes are thick in suburban Tucson. Only thing for me to say is "coyotes beware". I have a RWS 54 in .22 cal. and its my turn.

Welcome Paul! The GTA is a great place to be. Sorry about your pet. That 54 should do nicely, especially if you use the JSB Predators. We will look forward to the follow up and your future posts.
-
There is no way I would have tried that shot with a springer. I am just not very confident with my skill overcoming the twang and recoil.
This is a testament to your ability. Good kill.

Deric let me tell ya I felt the same way till I had my gun tuned and got the GRT111 trigger for it.. I drive 1/4 inch nail heads now at 22 yards.. Its only because I took the time and funds to set the weapon up right.. From the factory I would have never taken that shot... My confidence level has increased 100% since i had the mods done...
I feel as tho there is no critter that can escape the wrath now....
-
Thats Quite impressive!!!
-
Yeah ditto on the GRT-III. I have that upgrade as well. The gun isn't complete without it.
-
My uncle used to kill feral cats with a Crosman760 and BBs. Headshots, of course.
-
Yes you guys are right. My 54 was tuned by John in PA. and it's 100% better. Saw the coyote yesterday in the ditch, however did not have a good head shot or you would be looking at pictures this morning. Besides it was Thanksgiving and we have family staying with us.

Very nice shot! For a springer, especially .177, the shot placement had to be almost perfect to kill him, and you did! Sorry to hear about your dog though:( There are coyote's at my grandparents house, if they ever get within range they had better look out, my condor will be waiting! Good shooting! I would have never thought .177 would have done that, however since you used a predator it doesn't surprise me too much as they are excellent pellets.
