: Ok guys I got round balls
: JOHNNY QUEST December 06, 2008, 09:19:58 AM
Comming from pyramid air.. .22 cal.  bb type shots that have been back ordered for a long time..  I have read a bunch of reviews on them and thought they woud be great to try out..  I ordered them a while back and just got conformation that they have been shipped...  I hope they have the stopping power that i have read about...
Anyone of you folks used them...  ?????

The only round balls I've used are real .177 copper or steel bb's....which are not recommended for pellet guns since they would ruin the rifling inside the barrel.  It would be great to see your results when you start using them.   Keep us posted.  Wonder if there's any advantage between the round balls and regular pellets?

Ya Marvin, I hope those round balls are lead, because Stanley is 100% correct. Say good by to your barrel. Once you shoot one it will start the damage process of ruining your lands in the barrel. Remember that air rifle barrels are not the same as powder burner barrels, they are softer and more delecate. Please do not use them in your new AA 410 or at least do not tell me you did..:( :( :(

they are lead rounds...  not coated either.. I knew about the copper coated ones so I ordered pure lead ones to see what they would do.   They have been back ordered for 2 months and I just got the email that they are on the way.... I will report on the shootin soon....

I got some coming too.

Got notice of the shipment yesterday, should be here 12/9/08.

Can't wait to try them out, it's been a long wait.

I just hope I'll get some good results with them.

Hmmm hope the barrel and accuracy doesn't go south with em, watching from the stand's on this one. Good luck and let us know how they perform.:) Ed

I hope they work out well for you.  Over the past few months I read some reports from guys using .25cal lead balls (Hornady I think) in their Condors and Talons and they were so & so.  One guy reported the ball bounced off a squirrel's head!  He was shooting up at an angle and the ball supposedly struck its head at a steep angle.  Others reported average accuracy or not up to par with Kodiaks or other skirted pellets beyond 40yds.

Disclaimer... I am not an expert.

However I do know a thing or two about pellets. I would find it hard to believe that the round ball would out perform  good pellets with a high ballistic coefficient such as Crosman Premiers or another similar shaped pellet. I've used round balls in 177 and found them to be terrible at ranges past 20 yards and any kind of wind. Because they are not very 'slick' through the air they are more likely to be affected by it. Meaning they will slow down quicker and will also be driven off course easier.

The higher the ballistics of a pellet the more energy it will carry to the target and therefore the more likely it will do its job when it gets there. I'll give it to you the fact that when it does hit it will probably go 'splat' better than some other pellets, but that splat might not be enough at longer ranges because of the loss of energy from air resistance.

Find which ones shoot the best through your gun and stick with them because it is the accuracy of the shot that counts.

My 2 cents.

Ed , Harry ,AND RON MY BROTHER...  They are lead balls.. I do understand the balistic coifieciants of the pointed and domed pellets...   some guns shoot round nose as well as pointed and sometimes better..  Now Take a round ball of lead in .22 cal and run it throught the barrel.. I can see no reason it would do anything different to the barrel than any other pelet would.   I have read many reviews that said that the killin power is more with the balls .. thats why I posted it here ... I shoot to hunt..  Now we shall see what happens at 30 yards.. I make very few shots past that distance...   SPLATTTTTT is what I'm lookin for...   WE shall see ...

There is a good article on Pyramids site comparering round ball to pellet, w/ penetration test pics and the works. Pretty cool to read.

Will do.

I believe I have a good variety of guns to test with as well as you do.

I have a feeling they'll do best out my higher powered guns, like my Disco and chinese Beeman SS1000.

But we'll see how they do in the lower powered AS2250 and modded 2240 as well.

I hope got enough of em' to make a good judgement with...LOL

: ROUND BALLS BBs / Sphere's at speed
: kiwi December 06, 2008, 04:35:07 PM
The prob with BBs is trying to hit anything at any distance.
A spinning sphere traviling at speed though air / water genarates
a pos pressure on one side and a neg pressure on the oppisite side.
With makes it keep moveing in to the neg pressure zone "Turnning in flight".
Hop up bb guns use this efect to make the bb rise for extra distance.
A tennis player puts a top spin on the ball to make it drop /A base ball pitcher
uses this efect to turn the ball in flight. etc etc etc.

PS....its called the "MAGNUS EFECT"

Well my order came a day early....yesterday.

They look nice, and no damage to tins.
As if you could ruin an RB anyway right?

Might not get any testing done until this coming weekend though.

Might have to stock up on Co2 for some indoor winter shooting, I hate shooting in the cold.

Just my two cents here folks, but I would be a little nervous about using lead round balls in any rifled barrel. Especially those that are expensive, or ones I've invested $ into,...tunes, trigger, etc. If the barrel is tapered or chocked, wouldn't that squeze the ball out of the muzzle and deform it causing eratic accuracy? I don't know. However,  I would gladly  try them in a gun like the  Gamo Viper that has a smooth bore!!!!  tjk
: I've used them
: riflejunkie December 09, 2008, 02:12:03 AM
I've had the Gamo .177 lead BB's for some time.  I haven't used them on any critters but I do think they hit harder than the regular gamo pellets and I assume that is from being heavier, (but heavier than what?).  I have my doubts as to their accuracy compared to a skirted pellet, but I did't do a real comparison because at the time I got these lead BB's the only other pellets I had were Gamo's as well.  I've had Gamo match pellets that were so undersized that they fell completely through and out of the barrel when I put them in the chamber.

the black lead balls r good for pistol use only  i use it on my gamo p23 and yes they do penatrate well at 10 yds .i caught a rat the size of a cat and it was about 5yds and that ball hit em right between eye and ear and that rat took two steps and dropped me and my son looked and it was a big hole.they good for close range on airpistols,.i still have like three tins but since its winter co2 doesnt work well. the .177 do penetrate if they have em in the .22 version then you have a killer but i would try in the rifle unless it was a rifle that took bbs cause of the round shape.they work excellent in bb guns

You hit the nail on the head.. My Whisper shot a 1.5 inch group at 22 yds.  Buttt my 2240 with 18 inch barrel was stackin em at 10 meters..  Its my rat splat shooter now anyway I will try them on the next furry rodent that makes the big mistake of showing himself....They have been designated pistol ammo now...

Well, mine are kinda oblong and......Oh, you're talking about LEAD BALLS. Yeah, I have a tin of .177 Gamo lead balls. I need to get some .22 lead balls. Thought about buying them in the form of shot from Midway USA.

FWIW...I'm thinking of the muzzle loading .32's of Kentucky fame....patched RB's at supersonic speeds just do best with a slow twist...about 1 turn in 60". Of course, conicals have the better BC...but lots of game falls to the round lead balls. ( have fun cutting those tiny lil patches..lol)
: Re: Ok guys I got round balls

Roundballs are about the least efficient projectile design.  They shed speed rapidly.  That's why the old Brown Bess smoothbore muskets were only good up to about a hundred yards.  Besides knuckle-balling down range, they don't have a lot of retained energy.  A lead conical will outperform the roundball every time.  Now, a really BIG roundball driven with a lot of powder can and has taken elephant.  But we are talking maybe a two bore gun (two balls to the pound).  So, a roundball in a .22 gun, while heavier than a pellet, won't do as well unless at close range.  Another thing about roundballs is they tend to pass around hard objects like thick bones or bounce off.  A flat nosed pellet will deliver more of its retained energy into game.

Muzzle loaders use a slow twist for roundballs due to the roundballs's shape.  The Greenhill forumula for rate of twist uses length and width.  Generally, longer bullets require faster twist.  If you shoot roundballs in a fast twist gun, you have to reduce the powder charge or else the roundball will strip the patch and "skip" on the lands.
