: AA-410 The hits just keep on coming
: TCups December 27, 2008, 04:19:33 AM
Slept in late this morning - nice.  Had a late breakfast, biscuits, bacon, coffee and juice with the wife.  Along with a lot of birds - cardinals, robins, finches - we watched these two for a while.  It is amazing how much bird seed one fat squirrel can consume.  After we had all eaten, I slipped on some jeans and shoes, picked up the AA-410 / .22 cal, loaded up the mag with CPLs, grabbed a second cup of hot coffee, and slipped out back to my new blind.  These two were cold before the coffee.  Pffftt! . . .  pffftt, pffftt!  The larger one was within 12 yards and had no chance.  The smaller one at about 25 yards took a follow up shot to finish off.  Too much coffee, I guess.  This air rifle is absolutely deadly.  I like it!

TOMMY THATS SIC...You won't have anything left in your part of the state real soon...

Ron and I were playing horse yesterday and he was using his tx200 against my s410.. lol
small grass spiders at 32yds were no problem.. it got down to a 1/4 inch square dot to finally end the match...

Nice shooting Tommy!  That blind is definitely working for you.  Just be careful you don't wipe them all out like I did, heheh.

PS.
That's a really nice 410!  :)

In addition to paying for removing two full-grown trees from the back yard (involving chain saws, back hoes, a large truck, and a crew of Mexican workders) and replacing the torn up lawn with new sod afterwards, there were the costs of carpentry repairs to the two different holes gnawed into the attic and another into the door to the crawl space under the house.  Homeowners doesn't cover this, by the way.  Then, there were the clean up and painting afterwards. All of this required considerable amounts of time on the phone running down and scheduling the various services for tree removal, sod, carpentry, painting, etc.

No, sorry, I am vindictive at this point and would not mind at all were these upscale tree (and attic) rodents to go extinct in my corner of the neighborhood.  Bushy tailed trespassers will be prosecuted.  But the mild climate, the location on a golf course with lots of trees, an abundance of food, and the fact they just keep appearing without any apparent decrease in numbers leads me to think that the 18 or 20 tree rats (I have lost count) that I have permanently "relocated" from my back yard since the war began in earnest this May has had little effect on the total local rodent population.  I consider this to be pest control, not really hunting, although I also enjoy hunting in the woods of NC whenever I get the chance.

The pre-Christmas ham has long since become ham and bean soup, and gaseous remnants of bean soup.  And today, the Christmas turkey carcass is becoming turkey soup.  But as inevitable, (oh no!) the wife calls sweetly "honey, we need two cartons of chicken stock -- can you run to the store?"  OK, so I make a quick dash for just a few items, noticing, as I carry the bags into the kitchen, another intruder in the back yard.  OK.  No problem. The garage door is still open.  I pick up the "terminator" and step  around the back corner in time to see this one scurry to safety, stopping only at the edge of the back yard to give a side-wise backward glance at me.  Pffftt! Pop! wiggle, flop.  And speaking of pop, look closely at this guy's off side eyeball after being struck with a CPL at about 35 yards.  By the way, this was a standing, off-hand snap shot at this little rodent.  Tee Hee Hee, score number three.  Well, the AA-410 may give new meaning to the word "pffftt!" but to the extent the rifle is very quiet, it certainly accentuates the sound of the pellet finding its mark, also giving new emphasis to "pop," as in "pop goes the tree weasel".  I love the AA-410.

I don't think the local nutters are used to having me home during the day.  And most weekends I have been out of town.  Vacation time off can be hell, I guess -- for the squirrels.

Brent:

I have indeed seen all of your instructional and inspirational videos.  Thanks.  I am a follower of your philosophy, but I confess that I stop short of the tattoo.  Otherwise, I am a devoted fan.

Thanks Gene.

The several very nice air rifles I own, notwithstanding, the Air Arms 410 is the most lethal of the "non-weapon" air rifles I have ever pulled up to my shoulder.  I like the thumbhole stock more than I thought I would.  And the weight and overall ergonomics of this rifle sure feels right -- a feeling of confidence.  The Hawke scope is great, too.

I am concerned that crossing over to the dark side may leave some of my other fine springer and CO2 air rifles sitting in the rack when it comes time to do some serious shooting.  I have trouble contemplating the option of actually selling an air rifle even if I don't shoot it very often.  But perhaps Bhawanna (Roger) has a point about narrowing the field down to the three or four best rifles in one's collection and selling the rest.  I have trouble thinking about it, but he may (gasp) be right.

On the other hand, I should have two 8-gun folding air rifle racks arriving in the next few days, and my Shadow camo'ed Gamo Hunter Elite should also arrive back from Ed this week.  Perhaps that will re-invigorate the collector instinct in me.

An Air Arms S410 ERB Walnut Thumbhole Left Hand,  A British made PCP, this one has a side lever bolt action and is a .22 cal 10-shot rotary magazine repeater with variable power adjustment up to about 28-30 FPE with advertised velocities of 829-974 FPS according to Straight Shooters.  Haven't put this one over the chrony yet, but I can tell you at 3/4ths power, shooting 14.3 gr CPL's, it is an absolute killer.  Thanks to JoeCuz and Long Island Air Guns for an excellent deal on this one.
