I'm needing a new shooting bench, does anyone have plans or dimentions of your favorite bench?
I really like the one Gene_SC built too. Gene do you have any measurements you can give?

That is an excellent idea. Good thing my other hobby is wood working. I work at Lowe's part time so with my dicount that will cost next to nothing. Just what I am looking for. I was over thinking my idea for one.

I have been meaning to do this for a while. Got some time this afternoon, and the weather was nice, so I built myself an ambidextrous shooting bench. Project cost $91 retail, but $39.95 of that was a Skill Saw, my old one having quite literally bit the dust some years ago. It is all treated pine 2x4, 2x8 and 4x4 lumber with galvanized nails. I wanted it to be heavy and steady. I don't intend to paint it. I was pleased at how well it came out. I still need to brace up the legs to the seat, but I ran out of time and daylight. Here 'tiz.
PS: Plans? We don't need no stinkin' plans. Just build it!

That is a really nice job. Very military. Strong and simple design. Sure looks solid!
You don't need to paint it, but a cushion might be in order... you know where those pressure-treated splinters are going to end up!

TCups, Now there's a shooting bench..You did good on that! I'm thinking an anbi bench myself. I'm Left handed, but The shootin' buddy needs a right handed spot to shoot.
still undecided about permanant bench or portable..

If there were going to be two shooting at the same time, I would go one 2x8 section wider on the top. Think I will add a short piece of 2x4 with couple of slots cut out, one on each side, to prop an extra gun or two against.

Sorry I am late on your answer Wayne. I starte by buying the table legs at Low's. They cost about $16.00 for a pair. I then bought some weather stripping and a couple pieces of 36 by36" square 1" plywood. Once you have the plywood you can lay the legs out and determine how wide, or long you want it. I made a few variations. They are great tables on a flat surface. Tommy and me were shooting off them last weekend..:) They also are partable. Fold them up and put them away or put them in your trunk and go to your favorite shooting area or a friends house.

Hey Wayne, when I use a 'bench' to check my scope accuracy, it's usually from the pic-nic table. One thing you want to keep in mind is how you position everything in relation to how you shoot. Since I shoot off-hand most of the time, my shooting method resembles more of a "bow hunters" stand,...shoulder towards the target. This is the same when I sit at the table for a "rest", shooting from the end side of the seat,...if that makes any sense. If I try shooting with my torso straight towards the target,....I can't hit diddly-squat!?!??!? LOL's. Just thought I'd add my two cents here. Good Luck with your Bench Project,...I know it will be a success!!!!! tjk

It may be that flying elbow thing you have going on that is holding you back (LOL). I kept the design pretty simple. The bench seat is 20 in high. The table top is 1.5 in thick and sits on an 8-ft. 4x4 cut in thirds (32-inch legs), so the table top is 33.5 in height. This seems about right for me and keeps me in more of an upright than hunched over position. The length of the long center board of the top is 40" and the width is 3 x 7.5 or 22.5 inches in the front. It is comfortable to shoot from, LH or RH, but were it intended to have two shooting at the same time, I would suggest widening the top with a second 40" full length section of 2x8, else there really isn't enough room for two shooters to use it at the same time, especially if one of them is throwing a high elbow at the other (LOL). I suspect a friend with a pair of binoculars or a spotting scope would be just fine, though.
