Ok, I took a 3 hour (one way) trek to the nearest Cabelas store yesterday and Wow was I impressed! Anyway, while checking out the air rifles my wife told me she really liked the Cabelas outfitters thumbhole rifle. Ok, seemed like a decent enough rifle for the price especially since it had a scope included. Today, I just couldn't resist taking the stock off and seeing what was what:
The gun was packaged with that funky plastic Crosman trigger lock.....hmmmmmm
The action, barrel lockup and trigger group appear to be identical to the Gamo hunter/shadow series (without taking measurements) with the exception of a much heavier trigger spring.
The muzzle break is identical to the mb on my B26-2...made of steel with two set screws. The gun did have printed on it "Made in China" so I guess that was expected.
The scope, a 3-9 X50 AO w/illuminated R & G mildot reticle is a Leapers scope (or made by the same company as Leapers) but without the insignia :p included as well was a solid medium height integral mount with stop pin, appears to be an accushot mount.
The manual states, in the warranty section, if service is required you have to send it to the nearest Crosman service center..... double hmmmmmmm
I remember reading that one of the Crosman break barrel rifles (Quest???) was based on the Gamo Hunter/Shadow series internals....and it appears that this gun is the same.
On first glance it appears that the Gamo internals would be interchangeable with this stock, and I'm going to check it out later this afternoon.
I shot the gun a couple of times (scope not sighted in yet) though the trigger pull was pretty heavy, the guns firing cycle was pretty nice. No twang, just a nice solid thunk. Granted only about 5 or 6 shots were fired, we'll have to see how it does after a few hundred.
I'll try and post some pics, external and internal a little later.

Here are a couple of the trigger

They are identical with the exception of the seers. The Gamo's have a light colored (aluminum looking) metal while the Cabelas is dark
Here are both actions removed from the stocks. The top one is the Cabelas outfitters and the bottom is the Gamo Shadow 1000

The only difference in dimension that I had found was that the Outfitter chamber outside diameter was 1 millimeter larger than the Shadow.

Mark,
What kind of scope mount is on the Cabelas rifle ? Does it seem to be pretty good quality ? Best of luck...

It seems that Crosman is making quite a few Quest variants for different stores... the "G1 Extreme" and "Sierra" models for Walmart, for instance.
Which isn't all bad. The Quest action (if it's put together right) shoots well and with as much power as a Gamo. AND THEY SELL PARTS!!! Need springs? Seals? Sights? Trigger assemblies? New barrel? They got 'em all, and at pretty reasonable prices.

rabbit,
It looks like an Accushot medium height mount. It is sturdy and has a stop pin also. I figure the scope (Leapers 3-9 X50 AO wR/G mildot) retails at around $80.00 and mount (Accushot integral )at around $15.00, so it's a pretty good deal overall for $209.99. As a side note, I had just gotten the same scope only 3-9 X40 for my B26-2 a few weks ago. When I opened the box and saw the scope packaged with this rifle I said to her "You have a better scope than I do"! All she could do was laugh. Have to say I was a wee bit jealous. lol

I'm wondering if you can get the wooden thumbhole stocks from Crosman as well....I know they sell the Genesis composite thumbhole stocks.
One thing I noticed, well maybe two:
The sear on the trigger was a dark colored metal as was the bottom of the piston (or what I could see of it). The Gamos sear and piston are a lighter colored metal, almost aluminum looking. I wonder if there is a difference in hardness?
-
...it probably isn't intentional! Those parts have to be quite hard because they have to retain sharp edges. If they start rounding off they become unreliable. I had a B19 trigger release lever wear (thousands of shots) so I yanked it, welded it up, and reground it back to shape. How long did it last? I don't think it went 100 shots before failing... the gun wouldn't stay cocked.
The "aluminum look" vs. the black finish is strictly cosmetic... the parts are steel on both.
The stocks may become available, but don't count on it. I had asked them about the nicer wood stock on the Walmart-only "Sierra" model - it wasn't available as a replacement part, and she didn't think it would be because "they only ordered a limited number of those". I suspect something similar for this one.

Mark
Where are you in NJ? I am in PA just across the river from Trenton NJ
-
I'm from the deep south....He He He.
Seriously though, I'm inland from the coastal towns of Wildwood and Stone Harbor. 8)
-
...but I live in Salem County. I work at what used to be the old Phila Naval Base.
-
Not by choice mine you(I much prefer the gun laws of PA) but becouse the handicapped facilities and acess is just much better there than here. I will be moving into an independent handicapped village. Townhouse apartments all designed for complete wheelchair acess. After the steps and skinny doorways of my current house it will be a relief to be able to move about freely. I will even be able to get a car again!
-
Sounds like it will work out better for you by coming back...so that a good thing. I can see that you know NJ gun laws all too well, crazy isn't it?
-
Oh yes insnely so. I lived in NJ for 40 years befour I escaped to PA unfortunelately I got sick shortly after I moved and now I'm in a wheelchair. Oh well so it goes. But for airguns especualli its much more fun in PA. I'll miss that when I move. but until then I'm planning to buy as many as I can afford
