: scope shimming?
: shadow December 16, 2006, 10:43:04 PM
I got single piece mount on my shadow sport . I want to bring up the rear to give the scope a few more clicks.Got the film strips but I read that it works best on two peice mounts . I want avoid scope damage, can this be done on these mounts with just a slight shim.? Thanks Ed

I'm sure this isn't what you're looking for but it is an idea.

Ed

I have shimmed a couple of my one piece mounts before and had no damage. Never did shim a two piece mount. But there is a chart in our Library that will give you an estimate on shimming scopes. I use only film negatives. cut strip width of ring. Rule of thumb is not to use more than two strips in the ring otherwse damage more likely will accure to your scope.

Good luck

Ed,

I have an Accushot 1 piece mount on my RWS 350 Magnum that I shimmed in order to compensate for barrel droop and it worked great.  I shimmed the rear of the mount with 35 mm film strips, I think I used 3.  Prior to shimming I was all clicked out on the vertical adjustment and was still shooting at the bottom of the taget.  After shimming I got the POI dead center and the click adjustment now had plenty of "room" for future adjustments.

I have to admit I was very nervous, this being my first attempt at shimming, but I made sure I was extremely careful when it came to tightening down the now shimmed mount, and it worked out great. I know that some people will tell you to go ahead and shim and some will advise you not to do it. I also have read that if you're not careful when shimming you can severely damage your scope.  I certainly am not qualified to advise you whether do shim or not, I can only tell you that in my case I was willing to take the risk and it worked for me.  Whether you should do it is of course a personal choice on your part based on your research.

There is a shimming guide posted in the GTA  "Library" section, I used it to determine how much to shim.  Anyway,,,,, good luck with whatever way you choose to go.

Jeff

Shadow,

Whenever you put shims inside your ring, you are making it smaller than the scope tube, so when you tighten it down you are stressing the tube and also you are putting more stress on the tube by cocking the shimmed ring because it is higher than the un - shimmed ring. Problems might not show up immediately, but time will tell. It's your choice but, I would never shim a ring. Best of luck...

Well I shimmed it one strip. weighed the pro's and con's and have another scope for backup. I also de- canted  the scope with a spirit level etc. WOW what a difference, even tighter groups and I got quite a few more clicks out of scope  from the shim.As said, time will tell and I got my toe's crossed but so far It's good to go. Thanks for all the info from EACH member. Ed
