I was reading the Ringneck post over in the Hunting gate and the idea hit me.... How 'bout a feathered stock?

Maybe a sand khaki  (or any base color to suit your surroundings)  background, a white or beige ring thrown in on butt and one on the forend someplace. A  few speckles here n there with gentle feather outlines, highlights and shadows in random spots.

ANOTHER GREAT IDEA SAM!. :) and funny you mentioned that. I will be doing a feather effect stock for my neighbor next month, he's into bird's so I'm working on some idea's with a open/ spread wing at the cheekrest area then feathering it out with smaller feather's down the forestock. Lot's of stencil cutting on that one hehe. Ed

Right on!

On the stencil subject.... Have you tried Free Form hand stencils???  I used to use them allot when I was painting cars & bike regularly. It's just a piece of plastic or cardboard with various shapes cut out of the edges. Need a curve? Turn find it on the stencil card, lay it down and spray a shadow, highlight or whatever.  I used to make em outta old butter tubs and what not. It cuts actual stencil/masking time in half.

Here's an example of the stencil card I'm talking about:
