: Early morning squirrel hunt
: longislandhunter December 22, 2006, 10:12:55 AM
Got home from work this morning at 6 am and since it was such a beautiful cold, crisp morning decided to do an hour or so of squirrel hunting instead of going to sleep.  I snuck into the house, got suited up, grabbed my .22 cal Black Shadow and headed for the woods.

Spent an hour sneaking down the trails that meander throught he woods.  Snuck up on a huge owl that was perched in a pine tree eating his breakfast.  He had a squirrel clutched in his talons and was holding it securely between his feet and the branch.  He was ripping bits of squirrel meat off with that hooked beak of his and doing a fine job.  He finally noticed me and flew off carrying his squirrel with him.    After that managed to get fairly close to 10 deer that were calmly feeding in some low brush, then watched them scamper off.  But I couldn't find any squirrels so headed home.

When I got home there were 5 squirrels raiding the bird feeders, one of them intently chewing on the seed dispenser hole of one of the feeders to open it up wider.  I usually don't bother the squirrels in my yard but I've already thrown out, and replaced, 2 feeders in the last month due to squirrel damage, so I figured it was time to thin out the herd a bit.

They all ran up the trees at my approach so I popped in a predator pellet and waited for a shot to present itself. Sure enough after about 5 minutes the biggest squirrel of the bunch poked his head around the tree to take a look.  Put the crosshairs on his noggin, squeezed the trigger and the predator did it's job.  Hit him right in the eye.  He hit the ground, twitched twice and that was that.  This little nutter had been eating well at our bird feeders as he was one of the fattest squirrels I've shot this year.  Will make some succulent stew. The other squirrels never presented themselves after that so I cleaned my trophy, put him in the freezer, and hit the sack for the day.

I've decided to shoot 1, perhaps 2 more of the little nutters to reduce their numbers just a bit and to help reducd the feeder damage.  There's plenty of feed on the ground and at a squirrel feeding station I put up, but they insist on chewing and destroying the bird feeders,,,, drives me nuts !!

NICE SHOOTING, the nutters here are plenty but I've had to resort to super stealth tactics. They know when I'm out and the sound of the gun being cocked. I think I've even seen a WANTED poster with my face on it,100 nut's DEAD OR ALIVE and I thought I would be worth more then that he he he . Ed
