i ordered a seal and spring and a lube kit from jm.for my quest 800.got the seal in put heavy tar on the hat that goes in the bottom of the piston, some on the spring.im running on here sorry.the new spring is quite a bit longer than the quest spring.mebbee 2 1\2"aprox.i didnt measure.i could get it together w\out a compressor{know this is kinda bad to :0 }but i couldnt get the pin in.used a screwdriver let it set for an hour &a half.no help.will be building a compressor today.my question is,is this spring to long?any chance i wont be able to cock the gun after i get it in?if not, being longer will it give more power? btw that heavy tar is FANTASTIC! i put the factory spring back in,no twang.hardly any recoil.i like it alot.any help and knowledge you can share w\me will be greatly appreciated. thank you jay

The new spring is unset, meaning it has not been compressed yet once the new spring has been fully compressed it will be the same or even a little shorter than stock. I have had problems installing new springs even with a compressor. So before you attempt it again do your self a favor build a compressor . BE SAFE
Look in the library for plans or do a search. Or here is a pick of my latest one.

built the compressor, got the spring in.it was tight.i hear a grinding noise when i'm near the point where it cocks.what could be the reason for that??think i may have to much tar in it.going to let it sit a few days and settle in.put about 20 shots through it.but that grinding sound i can feel it,sumthin aint right.any ideas bout the grinding noise??sorry i dont have any pics.havent loaded my ancient kodak camera in my new computer.

the noise comes right before the sear catches.i didnt measure anything i just put it in.its set now mebbee 3\4" longer than the factory spring.the guide (where the pin goes)is all steel.on my 1000 it was plastic.i took it out and put the factory spring back.it was loaded w\heavy tar,i cleaned it out.will have to finish putting it together in a few days.the top hat is at the end where the pin goes right?i get them mixed up.it felt like there wasnt as much power as w\the factory spring.if i take off some of the top hat will the power come back?this is fun working on guns but it is tiring and gives me a headache.lol c.a.p. and everyone else thanks for the help

I had the same problem after installing a new spring in my crosman XT. I took it apart and reground the base of the spring. I made sure that the spring standing up on end would be straight and not off to one side. I did both ends and relubed the ends. After that procedure no grinds at end of spring set, cock. I hope this helps.
Good Health!
