After many months of whining and moaning about how unhappy I was with the fact that Crosman used the 2260 trigger group on the Disco, and stating to myself again and again how I would never buy one, I finally broke down last week and for my birthday I bought myself a Discovery.....doh!!!! I wanted a lightweight plinker for shooting offhand and sitting in my backyard. I was looking at buying another 2260, then I figured if I was going to do that I would get a 2260SE to get the steel breach and the Bug Buster scope, then I figured at that price I may as well spend a few more bucks and get a gun I could charge with my SCUBA tank OR CO2 tank instead of buying powerlets or buying a bulk fill cap and valve, so I finally decided on a .177 Discovery. I also ordered a TKO trigger kit and brake to round the package out. The TKO kit came a couple days ago, like 2 days after I wrote MikeT (this man must mail these things before you even ask for them, it was FAST!). The Disco will be here according to UPS on Monday, and I've already arranged a half day at work because I have an appointment that day AND because I need to recieve my new Disco. I already had a .22 RJMachine bolt and have aquired a spare 2260 barrel for when I need a caliber change, so I think I'm all set! Now I just have to wait, I hate waiting:(
-
I'd like to see that set up! I shot my Disco .22 today (finally the rain and wind let off!!!) What a totally different style of shooting from a springer! My first shots were all over the show! I've ordered a new stock buttpad to increase the length by an 1"! I couldn't shoulder the gun very well and it all seamed too loose! Hopefully the buttpad will create a better hold! The trigger was softer than my Gamo but not too responsive. It seemed abit flexable but maybe that's with reference to the hard pull of the gamo again! I'm not going to be too hard on the Disco because it was only its first day out! I'll shoot it some more and then maybe do the trigger mod so I can feel the second stage! Saying that, it's a single stage trigger I think! Is that TKO trigger kit a two stage trigger drop in? Other thing I noticed about the Disco was the loudness! What a blast! Maybe a bit of moderation is called for! With the gamo pro mags, I destroyed my gamo target holder with 3 shots! Blew the top plate clean off!
On the whole, I think I need to start learning to shoot again! I went through the library and started reading about how to shoot last night and tried it out on the line today! Took the shots in under 3 seconds each offhand, my group closed from about 2" to all in the 9 ring! Shame I threw the comp with the loose shoulder hold! Never mind, I hope you enjoy your Disco and post about the mods for me!

Congrats Dano on your new purchase......you haven't received it yet....and you're already planning to do some mods on it. Way to go....you're going to make it an even better, smoother shooter.
-
Congrats Dan on your Disco and Happy birthday Too . Let us know how the TKO trigger kit works out . I've got a friend who wants to buy a PCP but can't quite handle an air Arms yet . Except for mine. LOL I've been loaning him one to shoot field target with and I think he's hooked . hehe kirby
-
It showed up today during the only 15 minutes during the day that someone wasn't here to sign for it. I had left a note on the door "UPS, please leave on porch" with my signature underneath and he left me a "missed ya" notice that said "you need to sign in person". What a *^%*%)*(%*, well you get the point. I called and they said that the driver wouldn't be back to the office till 9p.m. and the service desk closes at 8p.m.. So I put it on "will call" and will most likely go pick it up on my lunch break tomorrow. Figures that I left work early today for a doctors appointment and had planned on spending the afternoon cutting open the new box, oh well, such is life!
-
Been there before , I called UPS back and told them to hold the package and I would pick it up the next day and they told me it would have to be after 3 pm , that there wouldn't be anybody there to help me. Dang it!!! I understand the reasoning behind requiring a signature , but you should be able to accept responsibility and cancel out the requirement with a driver license copy or something . I feel your pain !! kirby
-
Fedex screwed up big time when they left mine on the front porch and then came back later that night and wanted me to sign for it.I was a real jerk and said what package there was no package on the porch when I got home, and refused to sign for anything.I was realy upset that they would just leave my rifle out in the open even though I live in a realy nice neigborhood we do have people that drive through looking for things to take, and would have been realy P.O'd if somthing was to happen to it.I don't mind having to sign for anything if that means it doesn't get rained on or stolen it just sucks that the delivery man always shows up you as soon as you run to the store!
-
Yup, I totally understand why there is a signature required and I would be a whiney fool if they delivered it and one of the neighborhood kids walked away with it, it just seems like UPS has a habit of delivering during the only 15 minutes during the day that someone isn't home.....I swear they watch for me to leave from the corner:) No matter, I dropped by the distribution center this afternoon on my lunch break and picked it up safe and sound. Shot a grand total of one pellet through it, then off it went into the shop for a trigger tune. I installed the TKO trigger kit, which btw is a "must have" mod, added a barrel spacer and second barrel band, added the TKO brake, and milled the fill cap to fit. No scope mounted, and haven't installed the front sight on the new brake yet....and have still only put one pellet through it....haha!!
Mini-review:
Man this thing is TINY. I don't know what I expected, I have a 2260, but somehow I thought the Disco would be bigger somehow. I swear they could get 3 stocks out of a normal sized stock blank. The bluing is standard Crosman style, the stock could use a little polishing, mine is a bit flat. As stock the bolt was a little stiff, but I'm sure that will improve with use. The bolt handle was a bit of a surprise, I really like the slightly oversized handle, definate improvement over the 2240 or even the 2300 bolt handles, kudos to Crosman on that. The issue iron sights are pretty decent tru-glo deals and are of better quality than anything else Crosman has made, with exception of the aftermarket sights offered on their Custom Shop guns. For a sub $300 PCP after all of the aftermarket mods I've added I think it's a great little gun. It isn't an Air Arms, or a FX, or whatever, but it was never meant to be, and at their pricepoint these are a great introduction to PCP's and it will make a fine addition to my airgun closet. Now I just need to chrony and accuracy test and we'll be all set!!!
I can't say enough about the TKO trigger mod. I have tried alot of triggers, and the 2260 trigger is one of my least favorite trigger groups, but Mike's trigger kit makes for a surprisingly different trigger. It gives a nice two stage "feel", predictable release, and a good solid overtravel stop. I have never tried the "drop-in" trigger on a 2260, so I have no comment, but this mod only took me about 10 minutes to perform with a drill, tap and tap handle, and then maybe another 20 minutes of cleaning/polishing and reassembly. If the "drop in" mod was a skill level 2 out of 5 the TKO kit would be a skill level 3 perhaps, it's pretty easy, I did everything except the drilling and tapping while sitting here in my office chair watching TV....well worth the few $$ spent.
-
Hey Dan, what's the barrel spacer do for the gun? I'm hoping to go down the same road, with the TKO trigger group, muzzle and an extra band. I'm also putting an extra 28mm of butt on the end too!
-
I don't know that the barrel spacer does much of anything except fill the gap between barrel and airtube. I had it laying around as well as the extra barrel band from previous 22XX projects, so I installed it:) If you look at where the stock barrel band is it's at the same place as the 2260, so other than feeling more secure it probably doesn't effect accuracy much, but I could be wrong. The single best improvement so far was the trigger kit from TKO.
-
Cheers Dan for that! I'm not all that impressed with the trigger myself, so if I can I will change it! Parts seem very difficult to get over here in Spain so I may have to do the mod myself! I've seen a few different mods so far, one with the 3 screws, one with 2 screws and one with the pivot in the center! Choosing which one is the problem! I'd prefer a drop in mod so I can keep the gun original if I need to return it! Maybe I will machine a new part based on the old dimensions and mod that, who knows!
-
For what it,s worth. I tried moving the band forward,, I also tried 2 bands,,,, twice. Both times I got vertical stringing.(Up & down POI over a 25 shot string) Talking with a Friend that knows WAY more than I do,, we figure the air tube must "move" some due to varying preasures. I confirmed this by checking the spacing between the stock muzzle break & tube after 25 shots. It MOVED!! The gap changed!! Cant remember wich way,,, but I think it was accually touching the tube towards the end of 25 or 30 shots. Also,, I noticed when I removed band from the factory position (Off the gun),, the gap was HUGE,,, brl. pointing towards the sky!! Putting it on the front of the gun efectively "Bannanaed" that poor lil brl!! (shot like a springer) :p I noticed the steel breach did not fit down "snug" to the main tube,, unlike the fit on all my XX guns. I disassembled the gun & tried EVERYTHING,, 3 times!! :0 At my witts end,, I finally used a small vice & clamped the breach down to the tube (compressing the small o ring Im sure),, lo & behold,,, the tiny allen screw we all hate (LOL!!) was so loose I was able to tighten it a turn or two. Then,,,, BINGO,,, the gap between the brl. & tube was consistant all the way!! I installed the band back to factory position & tested again,,,,,, WOW!! This thing was grouping now!! Not like my 2260,,,,, but,, better than the "China Springer" groups I had been getting!! :D (Certainly decent enough for hunting) Then,,, I built my own muzzle break for it,,, BINGO,, one hole groups!! 8) (Cant explain why that helped further,,, "harmonicks" I guess??) I can honestly say,,, I now get one hole groups @ 25 yrds. now bench shooting w/ 14.5 Super Domes. :D Im only getting around 835 fps,,( I think maybe the "smushed down" seal is constricting airflow some??) Im not saying Im right about what I just said,, I am saying I put ALOT of time into testing my Lil Disco,,,,, this is truly what I found,,,, it worked on mine. Sorry for the long whinded post,,, just wanted to share my personal experience with what I also consider to be the best bargain PCP gun out there!! Tim. PS,,,,, my trigger still SUX!! :p
-
I did the 2 screw mod on the trigger like a lot of people did and like several ended up with fps. problems like many others as well and read about what the Crosman team did with their lower link and did that mod and got a consistent rifle again . What works for one does not always work for another .Marvin

Looks like I'll be changing the pivot position then! Cheers All. One other thing I have noticed is inbetween the airtube and the breach (it looks to be by the seal) there is always a bit of lube there even if I wipe it off! Could this be the seal is not fully sealing and air is blowing out at this point, Is this the little screw Timmy was on about earlier? Do I need to worry?
-
You can place some tissue paper over that area and shoot the rifle and see if it is blowing air out the seal or better yet a little soapy water spray on the area and then shooting the rifle should show a leak . Do not get to force full with that little screw it will strip out real easy I think it is only a # 4 screw . If you have good fps . readings don't worry .Marvin
-
Cheers Marvin,
I think I'll let it do it's thing! I was shooting peanuts at 50m today with it (OK, So I missed more than I hit but it was fun!) I'll just keep an eye on it and thanks for the advice again!
Andy
-
You have it all wrong . Leave the peanuts on the ground and when the gray tails come to steal them you shoot the gray tails . LOL Marvin
-
You taunt me Marvin!! (LOL!)

First time I shot the gun today and well, I have to agree, there's something going on. At 15 yards I ran out of elevation with my scope and was still shooting 1" low. Groups were all over the place. I got the scope from a friend and it was working just fine at time of transition, so I'm gonna go back to basics, strip it all back down, get rid of the brake I have on it, get rid of the extra barrel band and spacer, and most likely shoot it with open sights a little to see what the heck is going on. Crown looked ok on the barrel, but I'll look at that again too. The trigger is still fantastic, and I plan on leaving that alone. I suspect same as Timmy that the extra barrel band is giving me a banana barrel and pointing it at the ground, but I wont know for sure till I undo what I have done first.....I can't "see" any banana barrel, but that doesn't mean it's not happening. I have a couple other PCP's, and I've owned quite a few others, but this little gun is kinda fun in a Crosman sort of way, just like my first 2260 was. Further research reports to follow:)
-
Dan; The Disco I had shot that way when I first got it . First thing I did was change out the barrel with a 1760 barrel I had , that had already had the crown polished . Made a world of difference . Then I changed out the hammer spring with one from a(2250) 2400 custom shop carbine I had and along with putting a little moly paste on the hammer ,got the speed into the mid 800's with IIRC a 1600psi fill , gave me a consistent 30-35 shots . Unless you get one that's been prepped from Mac1 or Mountain Air , they're like a "box of chocolates, you never know what you'll get " . You shouldn't have any scope problems , if you do , you let me know. kirby
-
Dan after you get it back to point a . Do your self a favor and chrony it to be sure it is consistent . I know you do not think much of what the crosman team did with the trigger but if your hammer is hanging up with the screw mod try it stock as well . If you think I was the only one that had a problem with the screw mod check out the yellow forum or pm . Doug Owens over there . He spent more time trying to figure out what was going on than I would have ever spent .Marvin
-
Nopers Dave, I know it's not the scope, it worked for you and the box came to me undamaged, it's definately the gun. I stripped it back down tonight, no brake, standard barrel weight, no extra barrel band, and I left the fill cover off to make sure it wasn't rubbing the barrel weight. It was dark by then so I only got to shoot it in the garage at 6 lovely yards. Now of course 6 yards is different than 15 yards that I shot this afternoon, but it was doing one hole, two mil-dots low...actually good since the scope doesn't focus at that short a distance. If the problem was still there I would have seen at least a 1" group even at that short distance, it was all over the place this afternoon. Almost positive it will be fine tomorrow when I get it out at a longer distance, pretty sure it was the extra barrel band and barrel spacer like Timmy was describing "banana barrel". I started adding the pieces back with exception of the barrel band and spacer and it still kept shooting one hole, I think it's cured for the most part, although I may still pull the barrel and give it a lathe crown on Monday at work. This one is a .177, I also have a spare 2260 barrel and bolt I may try later on for my longer distance soda can sniping:)
-
Thanks Marvin, I did have that in mind. I made sure the hammer sear wasn't dragging like you suggested. You could definately adjust that trigger mod till it would make the hammer hang up, and MikeT. even mentions that in his included instructions with the kit. I made sure to give my adjustments plenty of extra room for that sort of thing by backing off the adjustments a few hairs past "good". Hehe, I adjusted a B50 trigger like that once and it did God awful things to the velocity of that gun, not to mention making it a bear to cock.....DaveD can back me up on this one, I sent the gun to him after I was tired of fooling with it and he writes me and says,"Man you had that trigger screwed up!".....hehe!!!! I LOVE a light two stage trigger, but I've learned that there is such a thing as "too much". It was ugly/rainy all day today, so no chance for any chrony, but I have that somewhere up at the top of my list when the weather clears up.
If you see my reply above to David Kirby I believe I've found my culprit.....barrel band and barrel spacer creating the infamous "banana barrel". I got a little too over excited when I got my gun and started working on it before I had time to shoot it. I'm one of those people that enjoys taking things apart just as much or more than actually using them. I remember as a kid my mom looking at me because I had taken the "home computer" apart....a lovely Atari 2600 game console......"Do you know how much that thing cost????? Now it's in pieces, ...and, and...I'm not buying you another one!!!". Well the Atari made it back together and got many more hours of gameplay. Now on the rare visit to see my mom in California one of the first places we go is Home Depot so she can buy a bunch of new stuff so I can go to her house and fix stuff. I guess my mom finally decided that after being a mechanic for 19 years it's safe to let me loose with tools in my hands......, but I always learn something new when it comes to airguns, lesson learned today for sure:)
Take care,
-
I know what you mean . I have a mechanics back ground as well and had similar experiences with my parents . But I have learned the hard way to test and be sure all is working well when I first receive it before I tear into it . I always chrony a rifle before and after I do any work on it and I try and do one mod at a time so I know what is going on . That way if I am going back wards I know right were the problem is so I do not waist days trying to figure out were I went wrong . Good luck . Marvin
-
...I had planned on seeing if I solved my grouping situation today, but when I pulled the Disco off the rack it had no air in it....doh! I gave it a shallow fill and went after it with a few drops of water in strategic places with the stock off. Found out the fill nipple is leaking, just a bubble every few seconds or so, but leaking just the same. This isn't the first new PCP I've bought that leaked straight from the box, so no blaming Crosman specifically, but you'd think these companies would at least fill these things and let them sit overnight, then give the pressure gauge a quick look, de-gas and box them up...I mean really, what could that cost in the grand scheme of things? I looked on the Yellow Disco forum and search turned up all sorts of hits for leaks straight from the box........oh joy! Springers are looking mighty nice right now:(
-
That STINKS!! Dont give up on your Disco,,,, lord knows I almost did on mine!! Check your PM,,,,,,,Tim.

Well if it gets bad enough Dan I have a RWS 46 not being used . May be a trade of some kind . Marvin

Marvin, I may just take you up on that...and that's no joke!
I gave it a full fill this morning and took it out back to see if the other changes I made fixed the accuracy part at least. It's shooting square now, it was definately the barrel band and spacer causing the low shooting issues. The groups weren't great, maybe sub-inch at 15 yards but not better, but in all fairness the only pellets I tried were the cheapo hollow points that came with the Disco, I still have a fairly large assortment or other pellets to try. Question to anyone that knows, are those hollow points that come with the Disco heavies or just plain old CPHP's? Maybe a trick of the eye, but they look to be larger than the regular CPHP's I had on hand. No matter, I have shot them all now anyways, just curious. I took the fill valve apart last night and made sure all was clean, nothing odd noted so I put it back together and teflon taped the threads to replace the rubbery yuck that Crosman uses during assembly. It was a pretty slow leak before, so I'll have to watch it for a day or two to see if the issue is solved. Thanks for the helpful suggestions guys!

Hey if that R11 starts leaking, you just let me know, I will gladly trade you my Disco for it.....haha!!!
-
Dan the ones they sent me were 10.5 grains . My .177 likes the CPH 10.5 pellets with the stock spring and the 2250 spring as well . I have shot the beeman silver sting 8 grains in it with good results with the 2250 spring but never tried them with the stock spring as of yet . Did you ever chorny the rifle ? Mine likes 1700 fill the best can get buy with 1800 but above that and things start to happen like what you are experiencing .Marvin
-
No chrony numbers yet airbud, but I'll get there eventually. I was pretty sure that those HP's that came with the gun were heavies, they looked pretty large in comparision to the regular Walmart HP's. They were also pretty ugly, bad mold lines and such. I don't remember seeing a CPHP Heavy anywhere for sale though, odd, maybe they're labeled "Benjamin" or something? I just tried Kodiaks, JSB's, and Crosman Heavies, all of which gave me the same 3/4"-1" groups going from about 1800-1200 psi. The crown on this gun was just "ok", so I will give it a proper crown and try again in a few days.....weekend's over!
-
Dan you did clean the barrel as well I would guess . You never mentioned it or I don't remember you saying you did . Good luck and I know right were the box's the 46 were shipped in are at Marvin

Did a quick pull through, but not a great cleaning. If all else fails I have a spare .22 barrel sitting here that I could swap out. On a side note I aired her up this morning though and she didn't lose any air between then and the afternoon, so maybe there was a little funk on the fill nipple o-ring that got wiped off when I had the fill nipple apart yesterday....will see what the gauge reads tomorrow.
I know where the Discovery shipping box is too. Before I trade it off I want it to work right though so I can give it a fair shake, I still have some ideas left and I like to tinker:)
-
Dan, I had some issues with the Disco at first as well and here's what I did to mine:
Re-crowned slightly with brass screw
Polished breech end of the barrel for easier pellet loading
Polished bolt assembly and the channel that it rides in, mine from factory was so rough, I broke one bolt handle trying to cock the rifle, now it does it buttery smooth
Polished and cleaned the hammer and the tube it rides, re-assembled with minimal light lube
Filed down and polished transfer port, that thing is way to tall from the factory, it might be part of the reason of your rifle shooting low, it rises the breech and lowers the muzzle
Lower link mod + some dremel on the sear to reduce the drag on the hammer. There's still difference between pulling the trigger quickly and gentle squeeze of about 20fps, but I do the squeeze every time, so it's consistent
Installed and removed HDD as it only slowed the rifle down (results may vary)
The result is a very accurate and easy to shoot rifle. It's not the fastest - just under 800 fps in .22, but very consistant. I guess the valve has to do with it, from 2000psi to 1500 I have no curve at all.
Don't give up on it, it's a great tinker toy and the parts are cheap! :)

Marvin,
I got to thinking about the barrel cleaning you mentioned, and while I had pulled a patch or two through it, I hadn't done a thorough cleaning, so here's what I did.
Best way I have found to clean these little spagetti barrels is to pull the barrel and use a 1/8" dowel to push patches with goo-gone through them till clean, then followup with a couple clean patches. I could do the same without pulling the barrel, but I always worry about getting gunk on the transfer port and pushing more gunk into my breach. So I:
pulled the scope, stock, shroud.
went to pull the barrel band and realised Crosman never put a top set screw in my barrel band, interesting.
pulled the barrel band and "plink", the barrel was pointing North about an 1 1/4" off the airtube at the muzzle....doh!!!
took everything down to the airtube and trigger group.
sent a half dozen goo-gone patches down the barrel, followed by a couple clean ones. Barrel wasn't too fouled actually.
chucked the transfer port up in a pair of vice grips (lightly), and ran it across some sandpaper till I had lost a good 1-1.5mm off of the end that goes towards the barrel. Polished up with some 800 grit and cleaned of rough edges and gunk.
re-assembled and replaced set screw in barrel band that Crosman never installed.
rescoped, charged with air, and took out to the yard with some Crosman 10.5 grainers for testing.
First shot at 15 yards was 2" high! I know removing and replacing the scope will do a bit for POI, but not 2" at 15 yards, and the scope even after the previous fixes was still fairly close to max elevation, after re-sighting it is darn near in the middle. I don't feel any blow-by at the transfer port, so I assume it is still sealing just fine. After rezero I shot a 5 shot group that was within 1/2". Still not perfect, but MUCH better. Knowing that this barrel is as clean as it will most likely ever be it should improve with a little seasoning I suspect. Looked at the crown much closer and it really isn't too bad, although a little lathe work would make it perfect, I may opt for just a little polishing with an old brass bolt handle and some toothpaste to avoid dragging my home projects into work. So I guess I found out on my own what Chris was just describing about the transfer port being too tall, and I would not have gone in that direction if I was following Marvins advice and doing a good barrel cleaning. So the "banana barrel" was still there after I removed the second barrel band, just not as bad, but still plenty bad apparently. I considered leaving the top barrel band screw out to allow the barrel to slide fore/aft with any airtube changes, but it looks like it's ok right now, will have to experiment more. I think David Kirby described these guns perfectly, "they're like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get". Anyways, thanks guys, if it holds air like it has been for the last half day then it will be 100% fixed. Going next weekend to the place where we are holding the NTAGM shootout in April, so I will be able to stretch out my shooting distance from 0-100 yards, should know exactly what this little shootin' stick will do by then!!!
-
No I really am not . But thanks any ways . I hope it all works out next week end . Just remember I have a RWS 46 with a TO 1 trigger with a longer screw in the first trigger hole that has a pull down under the pound mark just hanging around .Marvin

Well, when/if I get rid of this thing I will give you a shout, but I think my Air Arms S400C is getting closer to leaving the nest than the Disco is...I really want an HW97K!
Thanks again!
-
Dan; I think you've been talking about getting a HW97 longer than I'd wanted the R11 . I think it's about time you bought one . hehe . The prices on European made airguns has risen a bunch in the last year and I don't think it's over . Get em while you can. The HW97 is another I'd like t try myself one day. kirby

I've been talking about an HW97K for about 2 1/2 years now. I had an HW77K on loan to me for a week or two and really fell in love with that action, although I didn't care for the stock or styling, the HW97K fills that bill. We had a huge layoff at my work last week, so I am saving my duckets for a rainy day (or in case I'm next). If I go get an HW97K it will be because I sold something else, and the only gun I have that is worth as much and I could see parting with would be my S400C. I like my S200 too much to get rid of it, and I don't have any other single gun that is worth trading off besides the S400C, besides power wise it's right in line with my S200, a bit of a duplicate. We shall see:)
The Disco held air just fine overnight with no pressure loss that I can see, I think maybe it just had some yuck on the fill valve o-ring...I think Crosman may have gotten carried away when they did the thread lock on my fill nipple, there was a bunch of it on there, could of gotten under the o-ring. Seems fixed for now.
