: Buy chickens and get a PCP!
: Magnum April 09, 2009, 03:34:31 AM
Hi all, this is my first time in PCP darkside forum , I will give the short version story because I think it may be a good way for others to get a PCP :)
I was having trouble figuring out  how to justify a PCP to my wife..maybe others have had this ? The other day her favorite rooster was carried off  by a Fox  not to mention the garage mess from raccoons.. BTW The chickens have names, so they are like family to her. Personally I like the eggs but chickens I can take it or leave it.
Anyway "the comment",  I wish foxes and raccoons would come around in the day time so we can see them, really got  me thinking! "Ah Huh I thought" with night vision I could protect the chickens/pets  of a night hmm. I dont like wild animals in the garage , My attempts with flashlight are like waving a flag :)  I had noticed some talk of night scopes and the Scooby Doo incident on the GTA forums :)  GTA influence again, at least I know its not just me!!
I asked  the GTA springer group above (not darkside) about night vision on a springer and was told would not work well, something about recoil hehe ,and that PCP is best choice.   So now I'm thinking  if I get more chickens there will be more of a need for a PCP makes perfect sense to me, Right?!:) Wife 51% kids 100%, So  I did some looking and a fx cyclone is the one, whew am I glad that's over..."Wrong" I am confused by all the stuff  that I need, I do like the idea of exercise while I shoot so im thinking a pump first ,worry about tanks later:)

The question I have is that I don't know what pump to get or if thay are all the same , filters, connectors or extra tank  and really hoping Ya'll can set me straight on what to get or not get .  Tony.

Oh picture of chickens below which gave me 1% brownie points, and I know everyone likes pictures

Works for me, I have chickens too, and the PCP is the way to go for flock protection :-).  I have a huge pine tree at the back of my property, the hawks and eagles like to perch there and eye my chickens.  It's about 70 yards from my back door, I can hit branches right next to them to "discourage" them.  It works, after a couple of shots they don't come back for weeks.

FX Cyclone is a great choice, for your purpose get it in .22 and get some extra magazines.  Don't know anything about NV so you're on your own there.  If you're going to go with a pump, get a Hill with Drypak.  Just be prepared for a work out.  Since the FX is only available new from AofA, get them to set you up with the pump and any other bits and pieces.  Pellet Paul seemed very pleased with them, maybe he can give you some more specifics.

If you really like to shoot a lot, I strongly suggest you invest in a tank of some type.  I'd say go carbon fiber 4500 psi, but it might be a problem getting one filled in your area, and it's a lot more expensive.  But you get a LOT more air than a regular scuba tank, 60 fills vs. 19 from a 66 cu. ft. CF tank vs. an 80 cu. ft. scuba tank.  That's for a Cyclone filled to 2900 psi, refill at 2000.  It's worth thinking about.  Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted on what you get.  Later.

Dave

Dave Your advise is appreciated , i will check on the carbon fiber tank refill situation in my area before I invest in one. The hill pump does look good to me so thats the the way I'll go.I am thinking .22. Thanks again ,Tony

Tony the FX Cyclone is and excellent choice for what you want to use it for. It is light weight and the .22 shoots up to 30 ft/lbs. Excellent accuracy out to 50 yards for sure. Like Dave said get a couple extra mags. If you like to excersise then go to it. It is a 3000 psi plus fill, I think. Never put more than 2900 psi in mine. I bet you will buy a tank soon...:) An FX pump is a good pump and I think they come with dry filter as well.

Straitshooters used to sell them. Don't over heat the pump.

Tony - First off let me welcome you to the Darkside.  Your options for a PCP are endless.  After months of research and talking with Gene, Peakchick and others decided on a FX Cyclone.  Went to AOA and shot almost every PCP including the Daystate line-up. The Cyclone with its adjustable power settings set it apart from the others.  Lightweight, quiet, extremely accurate, hard hitting (mine is set at almost 35fpe), choice of stocks was a hunters dream.  Shoots sparrows at 70-80 yards with ease.  For what your after this is a perfect air gun.  Now with PCP's you have to buy support. I know that a FX pump is easy to use and it does not take much effort to fill your Cyclone up. Don't know anything about the other pumps.  I have chose to use a 44cu ft carbon fiber tank with 4500 psi.  I get about 35 fills per and (most important) have a place that will fill to 4500psi.  Bought the setup from Joe Brancato for $375.  This included everything you need.

I'm off again to AOA this morning to buy a HW97 in .20 caliber.  It's a two hour drive from Tucson and on the way back I'll be hunting with my Cyclone.  I love this gun!

I have both the FX and the Hill pump. I like the Hill better. It's easier to find parts for and easier to work on. The best price I've found is here. http://www.pilkguns.com/rifleaccessories.shtml

Looks like a good air pump airgun.  I need a backup for my tank.  Thanks for sharing the information.  PelletPaul

Try Gene's toy if it is still available. John

Might also get the ding donger from harbor frieght, makes the alerting of the predator less likely, while you can be alerted more better. John

I also went with the Hill pump from Pilkington. Nice people!  I ordered a female Foster fitting from AOA, but didn't ask them about the Hill pump since the pump itself wasn't shown anywhere on their website, just the DryPac assembly...

BTW, I was stationed at Davis-Monthan in the early '70s and used to go small-game hunting in what was called "section 37B", out on the west and north side of the Santa Catalinas as you were heading out the back way towards Apache Junction.  It was a ranching area and we saw working cowboys out there from time to time.  Neat stuff!

Great lookin guns Barry...The S10 is one of the feww multishots I like because of the way the mag sets low ...Bugs me the way the 410 mags set high and ya gotta raise the scope to clear it....
