: Plastic covered barrels
: Snorkel April 17, 2009, 07:42:13 AM
I am considering a Big Cat 1200 but my concern is with the plastic covered barrel.  I see one of the threads says that they seem to bend quit easy.  Would I be making amistake if I bought one?

WElcome to the forum,,,nice to have  you with us.....

As for the Big Cat barrel bending,,,,,,, I've never heard of them bending easily but I'm sure one of the other members with more knowledge on the Big Cat will chime in and give you a definitive answer.....

Will be looking forward to your future posts....

Hey Arlin, welcome to GTA.  I own a big cat and am quite pleased with its preformance.

The barrel feels very solid when cocked, with no play or wobble to it. Bottom line is the barrel itself is steel, the cover is synthetic.  Also, from what I can tell the mounts, pivots / hinges are all metal to metal.  Truthfully I like the fact that there is an all weather cover over most of the metal on the gun, I do not believe that the barrel would bend with normal use. As I said, the barrel itself is steel, the plastic is just a covering.

My 2.

Yes Welcome to the GTA family and like Jeff I've never heard of plastic shrouded/ bull barrel's bending. I have a Gamo Shadow Sport with the plastic bull barrel shroud and have had no problems with it. One thing with these shrouded barrel's though is that most Gamo's barrel rifling does not come to the end of the barrel and if you decided to cut the barrel back to the rifling do to accuracy problem's you will loose the shrouded plastic on the end. I just did a recrown on my Shadow Sport but didn't have to cut the barrel just crowned the end but it must be done with care. Ed

Welcome to the GTAForums Arlin !

The BEST Air Gun Forum on the Internet !!!! And, IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO BE !!!!!

Not having ever fired a synthetic covered barrel, I can't post a reply, but I would be careful to clean the bore if you get caught in the rain, remember, moisture can sometimes get under a synthetics shroud or covering.

Again Welcome, I hope to see you here often..

Bill

Um, the forks that hold the barrel on are part of the STEEL receiver???

Funny reply gamoluver1, that is EXACTLY what Gamo told me when I called their barrel plastic.  Sorry, but polymer and plastic are one in the same...

I haven't had any problems with the barrel bending.  While the barrel inside the jacket IS steel, I'm not sure if some of the other critical parts that should be steel are or not (trying to confirm this).

I've had a Big Cat for about 8 months with no problems. Then again maybe thats why I can't hit anything. I keep bending the barrel and don't know it! It does make for easy cocking. A nice hand full and no front sight.
