: New Gamo Whisper
: 954iron April 23, 2009, 07:12:30 AM
I'm brand new to airguns (just got my first last night). Stopped off at bass pro shops and snagged a gamo whisper.  Seems like a nice little toy with which to snap those damn black birds from the trees in the back yard. Just nailed my first 5 minutes ago. Aside from the garbage scope and what seems to be the worst trigger ever it shoots fine. So where do I go from here? Trigger, scope, and a mount seems logical. Not sure I want to spend a fortune as I alredy spend way to much on my centerfire rifles. I've been reading a bit on this forum and mostly have just one thing to ask of those that complain about accuracy from similar airguns. What do you expect for $200 a tackdriver? I was pleased that I can manage 1/2 groups at 15 yards. I have rifles that will drive nails at 300+ yards but I have spent a whole lot of money to make that happen.  Maybe I'm wrong but... It's $200, ya can't expect a whole lot. And I am more than pleased with what my money got. Anyway this seems like a lot of fun.

First off, welcome to the GTA forum and family 954iron.  Lot's of friendly and knowledgeable airgunning guys and gals here....if you have any questions, ask away, someone's bound to know the answer or at least point you to it.  Congrats on your new purchase.....some of those cheapie package airguns can be quite powerful and accurate.  They may not be tack drivers out to 20 - 30 yards....but some of them can get the job done.  You'll need to experiment with a few more pellet brands/types to see which one your Whisper likes.....

Thanks for the welcome. I"ve been poking around a bit more and a lot of people do seem to know an awful lot about what I thought were jjust toys. They are a whole lot harder to shoot well than a powder burner and after I've fooled around with it for a while I suspect that it's going to need some work.

Hello 954, - I agree about the Whisper, have one, and for the cost I have NO complaints at all. I installed  Bob's GRT-III trigger, (highly advised) which made a HUGE difference in accuracy, and enjoy it a great deal. Best of luck - and welcome aboard.

Alex,

I have a Whisper for about a month now, put on a Tasco Golden Antler 3-9x32 scope recommended by Gene, and screwed the trigger adjustment clockwise until the trigger is now crisp. All I can say is I'm very happy, and she's accurate as hell.

Broke down after half a day and ordered a GrtIII trigger. I just can't deal with that nightmare that came with it. Ordered it yesterday. What is taking so long Charlie??? Bad triggers hurt my feelings. And will probably go pick up a Center Point 4X14 tonight. Nailed a couple of blackbirds today. These springer airguns are a whole lot harder to shoot well than a powder burner! Oh well guess It'll take a bit to figure out the hold and that vibration/funny recoil.

954, - you'll REALLY like the GRT-III trigger. No comparison at all to the factory trigger.

Welcome to the forum, Alex. I have been shooting airguns a little more than a year. I had a Whisper Deluxe, and it has a new home now. I have three other guns that are much more accurate, repeatable, and pleasant to shoot now. There are $200 tack drivers out there, quite a few of them.

One of my three is a different class of gun, so I won't draw comparisons, but the Slavia CZ 634 and the BAM B-26 both cost less than the Whisper. Individual examples have a pretty big variance, and although my Whisper had been tuned, triggered, and had several scopes and mounts, I never got half inch groups at fifteen yards. The very first ten shot group with my new Slavia was better than any of about 30-40 test patterns with all the scopes and the mounts, the different pellets, the technique efforts, etc.

But there are others who have had better experiences, so best of luck. The Gamo scope is terrible. The GRTIII trigger will improve your Whisper a lot. If/when you replace the scope and mount, clamp it like a vise and use Loctite. The worst design feature on the gun IMHO is the aluminum extrusion riser - the rails that your mount clamps to. The stop pin will seat in a weak, thin, section of metal (the hole in the riser) and the pin(s) on my mounts just elongated that hole and slid on down the riser. Watch for that, but I can't tell you why others have succeeded where I didn't. Another suggestion, many Whisper owners put "Great Stuff" or stuff foam into the stock to reduce the thwack noise emanating from the hollow stock.

Airguns are a lot of fun, and in most ways inexpensive to shoot. Nice guns can be had for $100.

I have a Whisper, GRT Trigger, Accushot Mount, Center Point 4x16x40 Scope, had Gene turbo tune it. I've hit tacks at 50 yards with it, not a common thing, but at 20 yards it is. I've got about $475.00 in my Whisper now, don't think I would trade it, have shot dozens of grackels and starlings with it. I shoot it every day, something i can't say about my hunting rifles and shotguns. When sighting it in make sure you have a solid rest, I fought with my whisper for a long time trying to get it to shoot right and it turned out the table I was shooting off of had a wooble in it and was causing it to hit erratic. I like the synthetic stock and barrel, very weather resistant. My whisper likes Crosman premier hollowpoints.

Hey Iron welcome to GTA!

I own the Gamo Viper, these Gamos are a good "foundation" to start with.  There are TONS of upgrade available and your going to hear about all of them here, very knowledgeable and proffessional members on GTA!  As for my Viper, a buddy of mine purchased the same rifle but he has added to it the following upgrades:  GRT III Trigger.  Air Venturi Gas Ram. Leapers 3x9-40mm IR AO Mil dot scope with 1 peice accushot mount + Scope stop.  Let me tell you I will add the same to mine.

With all these upgrades into the Viper it makes it one HELL of an air rifle. Again I cannot say enough for the gas ram! It makes cocking, and the firing cycle VERY consistent and smooth.  The sound of his rifle shooting is a crisp SNAP rather than the Air-horn-twang from my stock viper.

You can take your whisper from good to amazing with the right parts.  It comes down to how much you want to put into the gun, and what your expectations are for it.  All the listed parts for the viper can be had for the whisper as well.

Also. if you would like to try a GREAT pellet I would reccomend JSB Diablo Exacts 8.4 grain, they have shot very well in several air guns for me so far, and drop the rodents like a hammer.

My 2!

Andy, I actually used the mount that came with the gun, have had no problems. I just check the tightness once in awhile.

Thank all yall for the kindness and info. I'm sure there's gonna be a whole lot more questions coming. Especially when In have a few cocktails and decide that it's time for me to take the thing apart and see what's what.  Can't wait for that trigger to come.

Like Richie said, the one piece scope mount is good. Just make sure it's good and tight.

However, I pitched the trigger, the Gamo scope and the scope mount spacer, and now I've got a Whisper that's accurate and fun to shoot !!!!

Hi, Alex and welcome to a great airgun forum. I have a Gene tuned whisper with the gold trigger, and you will love that trigger. If there is one thing that should be done to a gamo, that is it!!! Congrats on the new big boy toy. Mine likes to be held against the shoulder lightly with the trigger hand, and rested(not held) just in front of the trigger guard. Right on the little bump there. Good luck, and keep whacking those black birds. Take some pics with you girl(gun) and her kills and post them on the hunting gate. The more blood the betterHEHE.
