Hello,
My neighbors tell me that my Gamo Whisper is "too loud". I really like how accurate & reliable my Whisper is but I also want to stay friendly with my neighbors. So I was wondering if there is anything else that is available with the same kind of power that would be quieter?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how loud a Whisper is,but the R7/HW30 appears to be the quietest rifle straightshooters sells.
Quieter still would be a spring like a Beeman P1.
I've heard Whispers are tolerably quiet. Neighbors being overly sensitive? Maybe a compromise is in order, like no shooting from 4-7pm or something. At least you're talking with your neighbors. Compromise is much cheaper as well!

I have neighbors all around me. I am shooting three air rifle.First, my Crosman 1077 CO2 gun. It's pretty quiet, but not very powerful, which suits me fine, as I'm just a paper puncher. Then I bought a Beeman model 1024 (Chinese Beeman).It's a springer and much louder than the others.Third, I bought a new Remington Airmaster 77 multi pump. I shoot using five pumps and it's very quiet. One thing in my favor is my neighbors on one side are older and half deaf!!

My whisper has gotten considerably quieter. My nephew came to stay last week, we went through 1500 pellets. We noticed on the last day how quite the gun was, just a thud sound. We were also shooting a Daisy 880, pumping it ten times it was really loud compared to the whisper.

Hay Wally, Do what I do, play your radio while you shoot ! Turn it up to where you like to hear it from your shooting position, and that should cover most of the noise that you cranky neighbors complain about...I have a neighbor that tells me he heard me outside shooting every few nights, and asks me what I was shooting at, I realy seldom shoot outside, especially in the warmer weather, because of the young children on two sides of me. But I tell him that I took out a sick Possum, or a bad Squirrel (he hates squirrels). No Problems, and he realy never knows when and where I'm shootin :-). When I do shoot in my yard, SAFETY is always my first concern, and I have my radio to cover there imaginations, so far, NO Complaints.......Bill .P.S. He wants me to take out more of his pesky Squirrels, they are chewing on his house ! I told him he should have noticed a big thinning out of the heard by now, with all those squirrels that I have taken out for him ! He said they must be like air, and keep coming in after a few are thinned out :-), GOSH, I love him !

Thanks for suggestions, guys. I've read that the Beeman R7 is pretty quiet but I don't know if I want to sacrifice the faster fps of the Whisper. I shoot at alot of sparrows that keep invading my purple martin housing & need the faster fps cuz them little guys are pretty quick to take flight once they hear that "pop" from the airgun and with the slower fps airguns, the sparrow is gone by the time the pellet gets there.

One of the things most seem to overlook is the noise of the pellet on impact. If you shoot into a wood backstop, or worse, a metal pellet trap, it is the thud or clank of the pellet that makes the most distinctive noise. Build yourself a trap for outdoors and line it with duct seal putty. You will be surprised how much quieter your shooting sessions are when you shoot into a noiseless trap.

Although I took a shot at a English Sparrow with my R7. It did the job, but the we didn't see the remaining sparrows for 4 days! They're not as stupid as they look!

Instead of waiting until Christmas, - buy 'em some ear plugs as an "early gift".

I have both a whisper and an r7 both in .177. They both have been tuned, but you cant draw a fair comparison between the two. My R7 shoots right at or slightly under 600fps, the whisper shoots same pellets at least 200fps faster.
Both perform well for paper punching in my backyard, but without doubt the whisper has more power,however, I dont think I would consider it more accurate than my r7, which is slower, and more quiet.

Change your shooting location. Build a shed or if you already have one make use of it. This does two things. First off it puts you where you can't be seen, (out of sight out of mind), second, it helps muffle the noise of you shooting. As an added bonus it gives you a dry place to shoot when it's raining and you can build a good shooting bench and store your targets and other stuff there.
A good backstop made of sand or ductseal or something else that's silent will help out considerably too as will a little background noise to drown out the sound of what you're doing.

Ditto what TCups said........build yourself a silent pellet trap........makes a big difference & would be a good place to start.

Wally,,buy your neighbors some ear plugs & pizza with anchovies..LOL! If they are complaining about the Whisper,I really don't think there are springers any quieter! Big Bill gave you a great idea,I'm probably gonna try it myself!

I agree, I think I'll try Big Bill's idea & see what happens. I just hope I can find some music that the sparrows enjoy. :)

I really like my Tuna tuned Whisper & really don't want to give it up & get something else just to appease the neighbors.
Some of you replied about the noise that a pellet makes when it hits a backstop or trap, thanks for the suggestions but I do not shoot at anything other than "back yard pests" like sparrows, starlings, rats, etc & since I have miles of open space directly behind my house, pellet noise isn't really an issue.

You can actually hear the pellet fly with them 1000 fps advertised airguns so having something with less speed and less internal noise would be good. My suggestion would be 22 cal CO2 at about 800fps and a moderator, although moderator may not be legal where you live. To compensate you could try a long barrel, I believe you can have Crosman guns with custom barrel lengths.

how about a talon ss in .22 ? I think that is as quiet as quiet comes. and american made to boot. John

Thanks for the suggestion. I know comparing the talon ss with the beeman r7 is like comparing apples & oranges but from a strictly noise level aspect, do you think that the talon ss would be quieter than the Beeman R7?

The Talon SS isn't as quiet as advertized,it needs a bit of tweaking!

I can't answer that about which one but I am sure some one will chime in. I do know that a couple of my co2 crosmans are a lot quieter than say a b-26 or a rws45. all I can say is I have some "weight hanging on the front of barrel to stabilize the pellets" co2 in a talon too might be some thing to check. as far as I am concerned all spring guns make noise from the spring regardless what comes out of the barrel and there is no way to stop that noise. some making more than others and those with a tune will be smoother and less noisey. john

I'm sure the SS with C02 will be quieter oppose to an SS with air! A tuned Whisper is pretty quiet !

My 'Gene-tuned' RWS 34P .22 is MUCH quieter than my stock Whisper .177.
