Just read a thread where the subsequent poster admonished the previous poster for SHOUTING. Really? Can anyone hear the ALL CAPS? I, for one, am somewhat visually challenged and find all caps a distinct benefit, especially sitting in front of this thing for an hour. It certainly doesn't take up much more screen space. Where did this taboo originate?
-
Personally, I don't view all caps as shouting. It's just harder for me to read. I think that's the real kicker.
-
I can see it going both ways. I only use caps for a whole word if I am using the word strongly. Make any sense? Like if I say wow. it just says wow, but if I type WOW, thats a real wow.Kinda wierd, I know, but thats how I mean it when I do it.I dont think that people who type the whole post are "yelling", but a sentance or a word, to me, means he meant that shtuff he just said!
-
Beats me. Typing is hard enough without having to press another key to make a cap........ Seems easier to just type away and let them fall were they may. It's not like we are trying to get our book published......
My high school English Teacher died a long time ago. God rest her soul. She was a mean old ............. but she was devoted.
-
ON every forum you have whats known as the grammer police.. oops 2 periods there!!!! opps way to many excl. points... crappp I can't quit .. nevermind!!!!
-
It's partly because of Internet protocol, and the rest perception of the reader.
SOME BELIEVE THAT THE USING OF CAPITOL LETTERS IS SCREAMING !
some believe that not using capitals is submissive ?
I believe neither, as anyone can use these beliefs to their advantage, or against you.

For most of us, all capsIS harder to read, andDOES look as though you're shouting.
Sorry, that's just how most people read. Frankly, all caps bugs the heck out of me and probably bugs most people who read a lot.
BUT I have never seen the point of humiliating or admonishing anyone publicly, since it is not a grammar forum. I might mention it offline through email or pm, because it is a sort of forum etiquette not to cap-shout. I like English and wish everyone did. But it's not as though they were filling a PCP with oxygen....
And don't get me started on the widespread abuse of the reflexive pronouns. Makes my skin crawl to see "which" used as a conjunction.

Was SHOUTING!
All the same emoticons we use now come from there too, :-) was always a smile, etc... And now that we have graphics it's easy :)
So, the all caps thing has come down from the olden days of 300 baud modems :)

Who cares if someone writes in all CAPS? I think it's insane for someone to take it as shouting, this is an airgun forum not the PUBLIC LIBRARY,where is it written that being etiquette is mandatory,,, :o Some people write as they speak,so what! I have an extremely VULGAR vocabulary,it's not easy keeping the vulgarity out of my post,I do it because there are sensetive people that would take it out of context & because I'm going into the Priest-Hood! :p
-
Try this before you SHOUT so you can read
-
I choose to use CAPITALIZATION of characters to EMPHASIZE my feelings ! Such as WELCOME ! OR CONGRATULATIONS ! OR WOW !
I have always found screaming a waste of breath, although it has been said that I have a very LOUD voice ! :o
I find that when every word is capitalized, it just looses its effect. :emoticon:
So Mr. Father Joseph, when do you enter the Seminary ?

I still haven't seen any explanation as to why CAPS are shouting except from someones personal feelings! Can someone please explain this idiosyncracy regarding CAPS! :o

Thanks Dave1899. That is a nice little summary.
Also, rule 9: "Help Internet Newbies
Be patient and helpful with others. Remember, everyone was a newbie once."
So that is the other edge of the sword, so to speak. My face has been glued to the internet (when it wasn't up to a scope, or looking down a shotgun or arrow) for the last 15 years, making me a relative newbie. Some folks think the web is kinda like a teletype or just plain suck at typing. The intent is OK, only the effect is rude as perceived by others.
I still think the English language is really interesting and the rules and conventions are how we convey feeling along with meaning. Caplockers lose a chance to convey emphasis and emotion, and are perceived as rude by others, even if they don't intend it.A short kind word offline might help, or not, and they are free to choose, of course. People can drive 55 in the fast lane, too. We have to let them live (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-surprised.gif)as well.
I also associate the decay of English usageand spelling with the decline of the West, but if I feel strongly enough I will post an essay on that in its own thread. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-sealed.gif)It's just a little thing. Mandarin (Simplified)won't have upper and lower case.

So much of it is, indeed, "netiquette." It is just the communications protocols that folks that use the internet, in all its guises, as a means to communicate have become accustomed to. I find it in poor form to to avoid all attempts at punctuation and shifting from upper to lower case. I also find it in equally poor form to vehemently admonish someone in a public forum for a minor breech of grammar or lexical errors. ( I am certainly guilty of many errors.)
I have always taken it for granted that folks should exhibit some pride in their command of their native language. I'm an extremely poor typist, self taught and it shows. I do, however, make a reasonable effort to consider how I express myself and take the time to do a cursory proof read of what I have fumbled on to the screen. This is even more depressing when you consider that I make my living sitting behind a keyboard and screen for much of my day.
When folks consistently just blurt out something in a post, and obviously have not taken any time to consider what they are expressing, or how what they are saying may impact others or how others may perceive them, I begin to loose interest in what they may post next. This may come off as a bit of internet snobbery, but I have input to consider from so many sources that I have to filter what I invest my time in.
I agree with the suggestion that folks who read a great deal are more comfortable with reading in a conventional format. It is just easier to read something that has been typed as I might expect it to be written in print.
-
Typing in all caps don't bother me at all.
I just skip over the post that has all caps and move on to the next one.
Not worth the aggravation.
-
But why would it be aggravating? Isn't it the content and not so much the medium that is important? Who made up these internet protocols? That's a nice list - that someone else drew up. Personally, I could care less if a post is in all caps. Shouting hurts my ears, but all caps doesn't hurt my eyes. Anyway, was just one of those things I see from time to time. Better to say " No dumb posts!" Er, that may apply to this one, come to think of it.....
-
I only use CAP's when I want to express something of vital importance,...and usually when cautionning a fellow member of doing something that may be dangerous to the weapon,..themselves,..or anyone around them. About the only 'shouting' I do around here is when I accidentally hit that damn Cap Lock key without looking at the screen and end up with half a response in all caps!!!! Duh!!!! tjk

Some use this as rule of thumb and some use their MIDDLE FINGER as their THUMB. :emoticon:
-
Red,I agree with you 100%,if the same person/s decided that dotting your lower-case i was like giving someone the finger, there would be those that would actually believe that someone disrespected them by dotting a lower-case i..... :p The only thing that bothers me is when someone becomes offensive to whomever the individual is that is using all caps & doing so on an open forum,I have seen it done to others as well as myself,I believe that the individual openly correcting those that may lack the internet experience is the same person that never got picked as a kid in a choose-up game of football, baseball, etc. & wouldn't know how to change a flat tire!!!! :o I guess I'm a little sarcastic but I also am a care-taker for the underdog! :)

Id buy it. If it came with GTA embroidered on it.

I don't consider All Caps to be shouting....but some readers do. I just find them harder to read. Actually when I happen on a post with all caps.....I usually just skip it.
-
I almost bought a genuine Elmer Fudd hunting cap at the old Warner Bros store which used to be in the mall. Was going to make it my range hat. Was a real nice black/red check with the bow on top and Elmer on the front, complete with shotgun.

Red,
There are tons of articles about this practice on the internet, but I'll list a couple of links below just to get you started.
In short, large blocks of text written in all capitals are more difficult to scan and comprehend because of the way that our brains recognize the patterns in the text that we are reading. In addition, the folks who design the various fonts we use to display said text usually design them to be most legible when written in regularly capitalized form. Now for the links.
- Excellent article from a designer (http://creativecurio.com/2007/08/why-you-shouldn%E2%80%99t-type-in-all-caps/)
- Some designers discussing the issue (http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=32529)

:emoticon: Thanks, these are good stuff. I did know lawyers are guilty on proper usage on CAPS. It most likely they use it to make an argument for the sake of arguing. :D
-
I am guilty and im sorry for all my CAP POST :0
-
The only thing you are guilty of, my friend, is bringing up a six month old thread. (Or, perhaps, bowing to pressure.) Some day the critics' vision will be failing and they will wish like (*% that everyone used CAPS.
