There must be some optimal combination of spring, tophat weight, and spring "spacing" (which I assume is just adding washers to preload a spring) to get optimum performance from a springer. Is this arrived at by experimentation, or is there some engineering equations that expains all? What effect does varying the tophat weight have? Any benefits to prelaoding? Given all the springs that are available, how would you go about deciding which ones to experiment with? Any thoughts from the experts?

I have noticed that with Gamo Spirngers there are several different top hats or I should say maybe two. CDT would know for sure but I have that in my Gamo springers a few times. There are lots of do's and dont's when it comes to using different kinds of spacer..
Good Luck

Years of experimenting! Ask the top tuners and you will get different answers. So many variables, piston weight, spring weight, seal resistance, pellet weight...goes on and on.

is there a way to determine for sure whether or not the piston is "slamming" the front of the chamber? i guess you would pick your fav pellet and if it doesnt slam or bounce its good, if it does either then add or detract weight as needed.
