: to all you tf97 non believers...
: lillysdad621 July 02, 2009, 02:19:28 PM
i picked up a tf97 (qb36-1 for those not fluent in techforce) in .177; i always liked the carbine size and the underlever. took it home and took it apart. gave it a good tune and lube and then run about 100 shots of scattered pellets. then i tried all kinds of pellets and found that it loves the gamo hunters (7.5)... weird... and then i run a string of 10 pellets 3 times to see an average fps and i came up with a solid 628 fps. i tried also crosman premieres ( only pellet that would somewhat group, besides the gamos) and i got 603 fps. I took all the sights off and mounted a compact rws 4x32. It fits awesome and ends about 1 inch behind the loading port. I love the heaviness off such a compact rifle. It seems pretty rugged. The best groups i get are quarter sized at 20 yards. not 10 meter olimpic rifle, but just got back from its first foray into the woods. 15 minutes and took a pigeon at 25 yards. aimed at head but went in at the bottom of the neck. 1 clean kill. this one is perfect for the war against the starlings...
If you have one of these... do not give up. they seem to loosen up a bit after 250 shots or so. I'll keep you guys informed. And tonight i'll tear into the trigger. not crisp and weighs a ton. gotta see if i can help it...

I'll second that Gabe. Bought a .22 version ( 550's to 575's with FTS's and RWS SD's) from Ronbeaux and shot the heck out of it. Then gave it to my Dad. He's already killed 4 nuisence squirrel's with it. Asked him if he wanted me to scope it, and he answered,...."What the #&ll do I need a scope for?!?!?!?". OK Pops,..it's your gun now. Very accurate once you get the irons properly lined up. Glad things are progressing in a positive way for you and the TF-97!!!!! tjk

: lillysdad621 July 04, 2009, 08:44:49 AM
i gotta say, the more i shoot it the more i like it and the smoother it gets. the only noise it makes is a distant spring noise. today i was punishing a can (the bottom if it at least) at 42 yards and i only had to aim halfway between the x and the thick of the bottom post (duplex) on the 4x32. it hit 9 out of 10 shots constantly, 5 times in a row. Nope, no hole in oneyet but it does hit the 1 inch circle with no problem at that distance. it has graduated to hunter at 25 yards with 2 headshots. By the way, the gamo hunters are not swayed by the wind as much. I took the same shots with my AA s200 and crow magnums and i kept seeing the pellet veer with the wind... strange. not with the tf97 and the gamos...
: Re: Latest body count is,......
: tjk July 05, 2009, 02:19:41 AM
now up to nine squirrel. Talked to the old man last night, and he's bagged five more in the last week with the 97. Pictures you ask,....Hell no. Being a 'law abiding citizen' he doesn't want any evidence of it. I said to him, it ain't illegal if they are being a nuisance or causing property damage! Shaking my head!!! Mom's happy though, the song bird population is rising,...and keeping her happy and off Dad's back takes precedence over everything else,...including snap-shots. That poor man!!LOL's, tjk

: I really like mine (.177)
: cole5169 November 12, 2009, 12:38:12 AM
Got it from Compasseco a month or so ago (less than 48 hours after ordering).
The wood was much better quality than I expected, and a lot beefier than the old stock photos would indicate.  Nice checkering, even if it is pressed in.

The metal was really clean, except for a filthy barrel, and the internals were almost completely dry.  That's a big switch from just a few years ago.

My -97 has a lot of spring-twang/buzzzzzzz, but I haven't opened it up yet.  I want to shoot a couple tins through to wear the trigger in.  The rumors are true, the trigger is NOT great; but it improves over time.  I still think the Gamo triggers are worse, though.
I don't care for the auto safety...

Easy to cock, not too loud, not too long...  I think this will be a keeper.
I'm getting close to the point (2 tins) where I can open it up and lube it to get rid of the spring noise :)

I was surprised that mine liked Gamo Hunters, too.  Those are usually one of my "break-in" pellets:  not expected to perform too well, just to wear a new gun in.  Mine  also likes RWS Hobbys.

Rontier...I remember that glue. I tried a few things and I believe it was olive oil that worked best...either that or dish soap (straight). In any case, once I figured out which to use came off pretty easily just rubbing with a towel dipped in solution.
: Re: to all you tf97 non believers...
: thebookdoc November 12, 2009, 01:33:46 AM
Shot my TF97 for about 6 months before I decided I wanted a little more. I wish they'd come up with a different loading method. If you don't like sticking your fingers in the breach, it is a little bit of a pain. However, that said, I shot mine again just the other day. OMG -- is it ever easy to cock! Never tuned it and it has a little buzz/twang and diesel. But I'm also not rushing to get rid of it. Maybe I'll chrony along side the Walther Force 1000 this weekend...
: Re: to all you tf97 non believers...
: lillysdad621 November 12, 2009, 02:30:26 AM
mine in .177 is awesome... got about 2000 shots thru it. the trigger got a bit smoother, but still a hard break. It is still very quiet, with a spring noise compared to a PCP hamer bounce. mine has a gamo 3-9x40 scope, zeroed at 20 yards and is a penny hole gun. I could shoot 500 shots and they will all fit under a penny. very consistent with the hobbies, at high 600s, low 700s. great starling gun.

I had a 97 in 22 cal it was a very nice accurate gun the biggest problem way the plastic base for the rear sight after cranking it down it bent and cracked the base of the sight I fixed it by making a new base out of aluminum. Other than that it was very good by the way the easyest way to get the label off is with wd 40 sprayed on and let set a little while works on all labels very good. howie
: Re: to all you tf97 non believers...
: Rontier November 12, 2009, 12:03:59 PM
I'm a Believer now that I got to shoot her.
Well not so a bad gun??
mine is 22 cal & with out the scope on yet ! it's a penny shooter from 15 yards , Wow I'm
shocked I can see the Iron sight's .All my gun's have Scopes on them for my bad old eye  sight.
I shot 15-20 times and Iron sight's, at the end I was hitting them under a 1/2"Group. For me that is very good, It's a Keeper, just my shot on the TF97.

There are things I'ed like to make better ?
But that's true with all my air guns?? . :o

this in 22cal would make a good Hunter,
& the 117 also, judging on accuracy of it.
: Re: to all you tf97 non believers...
: lillysdad621 November 12, 2009, 01:24:04 PM
yes, the .22 would make agreat backyard safari gun. They get smoother the more you shoot it. Remember to tighten all the bolts and screws. then clean off all he excess mistery oil from the breech and piston, as well as the chamber, or it will diesel for 100s of shots. The trigger?... it will get smoother, grittiness will wear out, but it will still weight a ton. It is a nice little shooter and i think it's heftiness is what makes it so smooth. I have not shot mine with open sight since new... maybe i'll go back to that to try something different...

: Walt November 12, 2009, 01:32:50 PM
I think the 97 is one of those you at least got what you paid for guns. After the at home de burr and lube tune using the stock parts it's not a bad gun. It's a good shooter at about ten yards and seems to like the Peak brand pellets that Archer sells. At ten yards it shoots nickel size groups. Here are a couple of pic's.

I have the TF99 in .22 and have been thinking about chopping the barrel and cocking lever, just cuz. I also want to adapt a synthetic seal to it.
: Re: to all you tf97 non believers...
: Rontier November 12, 2009, 03:10:13 PM
I like you pic'c , & the heftyness is ok with me helps hold on target.
I just put the TF 4X32 from Compasseco & it's a tad much long !

I see you'ved used a shorty scope ?
looks like that one works better , I'll shoot this one in the morring &see if it's in the way too much?& then make a choose of Iron or scope, I've got a 4X32 Simmons & it's 11 1/4 long so about a 1" shorter! The Simmons is on the Quest 1000 & so that would not make any change for it! & may help on th TF97?The TF scope is a cheep one? It looks just like the centerpoint that came on the Quest1000.
The Centerpoint would not stay on target or zero it would move about every 5-10 shots' & have to redial !
I've got theTF scope it backed up as far as it will go & it still covers the loading about 1/2" or so.

Sure you wouldn't rather trade for a TF97? I've got a bunch of pellets through mine, but it is certainly in good condition and pretty darn accurate. It is a .177, and I'd be glad to have a .22

: larspawn November 13, 2009, 05:12:01 PM
I got mine for the unbelievable price of $54.  It was a mid summer when Compasseco had the old style on sale.  Like others have said:

1)  extremely easy to cock
2)  exceptionally accurate inside 25 yards.  seriously single hole stuff.
3)  nice hefty weight helps with accuracy
4)  not hold sensitive at all
5)  really heavy and rough direct sear trigger.  not much you can do but stone it
6)  loves the TF domed pellets

Mine is .22 and I keep thinking I should sell it but then I shoot it and decide I can't sell it.  I was hitting Gamo Squirrel KZ automatic with mine at 20 yards.  Phenominal!  I put the Leapers Bug Buster 5-9x32.  Fits perfectly even with the sunshade installed.

Oh, I forgot to remark that when I took it apart to lube tune it I was surprised at how LOOOONG that spring is.  I was also surprised at how many pins the trigger group has.  You would think something that complex would be way smoother!!!

on the new TF 97?. It was the first item to break on my old 97 .22 followed by the stock at the front mounting screws. just checking if either has been updated in the new model.  I have a old TF 36 .177 (qb36) it's the fuglyist gun I own but also the best shooting one. did a full boat tune. buttoned piston, pellet probe. action pillar, trigger etc... outshoots some of my guns costing 20X more. fwiw Joe

: RE: Is the front sight base still plastic...
: Fatman November 19, 2009, 06:54:10 AM
Hi JoeK:

The newer Tech Force Model 97's have an aluminum front sight base.  Some are mounted crooked and you may run out to windage adjustment in the rear sight.  You will need to remove the slotted retaining nut(s ) and threaded shaft and and drive out the roll pin.  Reversing the pin - inserting it from the other side usually corrects this.  I think the pin is chamfered on one end so it is easier to start.  You may have to use a rat tail file to re-angle the groove in the barrel if reversing the pin doesn't cure the problem.  Don't go too far and make the groove too big or it will allow the sight to shift.

I have far too much time on my hands.

Cheers,
Fatman

Good looking gun, Im going to buy one of those soon.  My b-3 broke today. I could fix it, but im going to retire it. It was only 15 dollars after all. Im getting the TF97 in .22 to replace it.
: Re: to all you tf97 non believers...
: lillysdad621 January 14, 2010, 12:32:09 AM
dont retire it... modify it!. the b3 makes a very good rifle with a bit of love. the tf97 does not respond as well to tuning, but it is inherently a better rifle.

I guess I'm compareing the 2 guns I have
a home tuned B-3-117, with my steve super tuned TF97-22
The B-3 is not accurate for me?
But it's the AK-47 & very hold sinitive
& picky on pellets only likes C-HUNTERS
tryed the hollow points -no good,
But it may the shooter too at my age not so
hold steady, Like Mike told me the B-3 can't
be held ! must let it reat in your hands.
I'm still working on that!
The TF97-22 will shoot the same no matter
how you hold it ! That is 1 thing I like about
it, & locktight on all screws a must, & not to
tight on the front screws or you could crack-
the stock, the first one came with a hair line
crack in it, But the bear trap did not work on it!
so sent it back cost me $22.00 ship..
& #2 TF97 has a bad breach seal in it!
that blocks off half the port hole? But I don't know allot about AG's so that may not be a problem?
: RE: to all you tf97 non believers...
: Mryan21 January 14, 2010, 07:02:07 AM
My b-3 was great before it broke, the tool sale is coming in march and im going to get another one for 15 bucks, heck maybe i'll by two..I plan on trying a tune on the new one. The old one has seen better days. I got my moneys worth out of it though. I have shot many starlings and pigeons, with a couple of close range squirrels mixed in. I wish i had the knowledge you guys do, as i took my B-3 apart yesterday and dont even know where to start, i see what's broken, and could replace that, but i just don't have the knowledge to actually tune and lube a gun. I hang out here so much, because i want to learn...I plan on ordering the QB 78 and the tech force 97 at the same time. Can't wait to shoot them, and hopefully get some help tuning them. I can't find a place that describes in detail how to tune a springer, I'm not even sure if i have the tools to accomplish the task. Btw the b-3 i have is 5 years old, and has thousands and thousands of pellets through it.

Hey Jeff,
I think we should all by a tech force 97. Why not? The more guns the better right....? Wish i was loaded, i would by a new disco in .22 with a hand pump....I work alot, but have many other things that have to come first. Someday, i'll have a room full of guns...

Geez Ron are you airgun cursed?  LOL. First the B3 now thje TF97!  I've got probably 1,500 pellets through mine and it just gets smoother. I just shot it again last night so I could post some groups. My TF97 basically cocks itself it is so smooth. Pretty consistent shot speed/low shot to shot deviation. I'm having second thoughts about putting it up for sale. I shot a 5 shought group that looks like a 3 shot string because 2 went through the same hole!

: Rontier January 18, 2010, 05:17:30 AM
Cursed! that may be? but finly I got a new tuned tf97 from compasseco & it as a good shooter, even worked
the trigger some, I'm happy with it for a 22 I thank it's about in the 500fps or less but has the knock down power , I can't see any pest taking a hit from it, & walking away.

my wife has 2 cats ,& 1 is a good mouser, brought 1 in Friday .so I don't know where she get's them ?
I've never seen any around my house ? but I live in the green Belt & there are Deer,Rabbets, coyotes,
& a Mtn lion that has taken a few dogs & a lot of cats, the Green Belt runs about 20 miles the north side of austin,& I'm in the city lim's so I can't be seen with a air gun at all?

But back ti the TF97 it is a good gun for what I do cut up cans & paper.

yup ,I got hooked by Compasseco that I don't
recommand!
but these Guy's here got me hooked on AG's
& the Bargain Gate shoud come with a lock&key !!
But I have to say what ever steve did to gun#2,
well it shoots better, then any AG I I got right now? & the only 1- I can see the sights,
everything has aScope on it!
& I took her apart very carful not to turn the gun over or the pins will fall out !
I cleaned with break cleaner & put a drop of
E-6000 glue on each pin /so they will stay in
besides the stock holding them in place !.
and now I'm into the 3rd tin of 250 count?

YUP, THAT TOOK 2 AIR GUNS & A SUPER TUNE UP FROM STEVE, TO GET TO THIS POINT, & I MAY ADD THAT IT USES MORE OIL THEN THEY TELL YOU? MINE IS ABOUT 50 SHOTS ,THAN THE AG SOUNDS LIKE A
22 RIM! . & RINGS LIKE STEEL HITTING ON STEEL?BUT PUT 2-DROPS IN THE CHAMBER ,& ALL IS WELL, MAY HAVE TO DO WITH THE SUPER TUNE?? :) BE HAPPY!!
I GOING TO SHOOT THE HECK OUT OF THIS
ONE!! WELL AS MUCH AS MY ARM WILL LET ME.
