the seal is "smushed", I dont think it's supposed to be like this (I just purchased this rifle, it's actually a Quest), what should I do? where can I get a new seal?

It may not be as bad as it looks in the pic. If you clean it up around the edges with a pick or razor blade being careful not to cut the seal it may appear to be not quite so nasty. Then after you do that, take a piece of wax paper or even tissue paper, insert a pellet and ten carefully close the barrel to lock up. Take care not to tear the paper. Now fire the gun. Carefully open the gun again and see it the paper is blown out the side somewhere. If not, then the breech seal is not leaking. If it is leaking, you can order a breech seal from Crosman. Very easy to install.

always something to learn, wax paper, just another use for it.  great Idea Bob.
I recieved a HW 30 from an auction , the breech seal was in worse shape than yours,  the gun shot, but weakly.  had to order from beeman, took three weeks to get one, but  a fellow airgunner sent me one . was easy to replace, just make sure when you " pick" all the pieces out, and there will be some hard to get ones,  clean all you can get and then some, lube the new seal with a drop of pelgun oil and it should pop right in.

The seal is supposed to go "squish".

When it is new, the seal protrudes further than necessary from the breach face so that when the breach is closed, the relatively soft seal is pushed hard into the receiver face to make a seal. That's when it gets squished, and excess material might "ooz" out to the sides.

The actual breach lock-up position is determined by the bottom of the breach block hitting the top of the lock-up detent wedge in the receiver, so as the breach is closed the seal will continue to squish until the lock-up is complete.

This design helps take care of manufacturing tolerances... if the breach and receiver faces are further apart, the seal squishes less, if they're closer, it squishes more. The squish might even be a little uneven, if the faces aren't perfectly parallel.

If the seal wasn't squished at all, then you'd have a REAL problem...

BTW - replacement seals are available from Crosman for $1.00 ea (part# C1K-008), with $4.00 for shipping (!). Since the shipping charge appears to be a flat fee, it might make sense to also order a couple of extra piston seals (C1K-002, around $3.00) and maybe even a mainspring or two (C1K-010, under $5.00).

They might come in handy if you wanna keep your Quest operable for many years. Once it's set up properly, it is a very pleasant rifle for the money...

Thanks for all of the info guys, I'm gonna order those seals anyway just to have them down the road, I like to try to keep my guns as long as I can, and I'll try that paper trick tommorow (babysitting my neice with my wife and she's asleep) to see how it pans out.
