Wish someone would tell me. How can there be so many of these refurbished? Sportsmen's Guide had them for a long time and now Cabelas...  Frank

They're down to $64.99 now, plus $10.95 shipping for me.

Wow I just saw the video tour of the East Hartford Carbella store, cool place.  Wish I knew it was so close to the CT airgun show I would've stopped by after the show.  But if I buy one of these refurbs I can do an in-store pickup for free shipping and help offset the cost of gas to drive up there again.

some one convince me to buy this thing! lol I have a ruger 10-22 only have one pellet gun a crossman g1 extreme!  would be nice to have this... I wonder how the quality will be froma  remanufacured..  I bought a crossman 1377c refurbed and it was fine other than obvious wear from usage.   I would be mad if the wood was really bad but then again I could re do the wood!....

Get it You won't be sorry. With a JM spring/seal I am averaging 889 with FTS's. 10 shot ragged hole covered by a dime at 20 meters. They are great shooters. They are easy to work/learn on.

I purchased one from Sportsman's Guide... It was in fine condition with just an "R" stamped in the wood above the forward mounting screws.  Truthfully I don't think it was ever used and don't know where all these refurbished rifles come from..  Frank

For that price you defiantly cannot go wrong guys. For those of you who just except all new guns out of the box to shoot to your liking, may not like the Ruger Air Hawk. But if you give them a good tune you will enjoy shooting them very much. Like I have said often they are almost the exact same build as the ever popular RWS 34.......
: Re: Ruger Airhawk $69
: popadave July 30, 2009, 04:16:48 AM
Probably a good deal since my new un-refurbished Airhawk is still spraying pellets after two months of shooting.  But it is slowly getting better.  I probably have close to 2000 pellets of various kinds and shapes.  I now get only about one loose shot out of five.  Meaning that 4 shots can be covered by a dime or nickle but there is almost always one that is 3/4" or more away from the group.

I've been playing with all kinds of different holds, hold positions, etc.  It is still too stiff for my 69 year old arms to cock more than a few times.  But I place the butt on the floor on a piece of carpet, hold the stock with my right hand and shove the barrel down with my left. Then I load the pellet and lift the whole rifle up to the shooting position.  I can tell you one thing for sure, is that I am much stronger now at least using that muscle group!

I guess the sale price plus the cost of a tune job would be a better deal than paying full retail plus a tune!

okay so I got the gun in the mail today.  it came with the original box which looked really beat up, and had a shipping label from umarex to some cabelas distributor on the original.  The metal after I cleaned it was flawless, but the stock on the other hand has it's fair share of knicks and dings.  I shot the gun to make sure everything was in working order.  The trigger on this gun is GREAT.  I love the light pull it has. I didn't even adjust the pull.  Compared to my Crossman g1 extreme this gun has a shorter cocking stroke.  I like the ball at the base of the barrel to lock in the barrel to the reciever.  It has no play what so ever....   This gun is tramp stamped with two R's  which I have pics of, but I plan on re staining and re finishing the stock because it is beat up.  The gun did diesel on the first 2-3 shots but that was it.  I dunno if this gun was shot by the original owner.  it also has a little heavier recoil than my g1.
I might do another review once I get the scope on and get some rounds through it to see how accurate it is, but
That is it,  For 75 bucks shipped I'm not complaining.  I am going to redo the stock anyway so, This was a Great Deal and shipped in a hurry!  Thanx longislandhunter for posting it up and everyone else who had input.

GRT kit from Jim Maccari is an aftermarket spring and guide for the Diana 34 and fits the Air Hawk. By the way The Air Hawk Elite muzzle break is only 19.99(plus shipping) from Umarex and fits like a glove.

After carefully going through my Ruger, it shooting fantastic groups. I did shorten the barrel a couple inches and of course a re-crown. It is very strong and of course it has the JM GRT Spring and new seal. It has a thin metal sleeve in the piston and the GRT spring will rub on it when spring is compressed. If you take the metal sleeve out it will not rub. BUT after the spring gets a bit older and cants the cocking shoe will rub on the spring.

I took my sleeve and chucked it up in my lathe and took a few thousandths of the inside. Polished with emery cloth and the GRT spring does not rub and cocks as smooth as glass. Timmy worked on his while he was here this last week. His also is very accurate and a strong shooter as well.

These Chinese Rugers Air Rifles are a great project gun for anyone. Especially for the initial cost. Buy a spring and seal from JM, do some de-burring and cleaning up with a good lube job and you will have classic RWS 34 Clone shooter..:)

Here is mine after Timmy did the stock.

Here is the one that I just got from Cabelas... The only thing I have done to it was to brush off the packing white stuff and temp mount the scope.  Very little damage to the stock.  For $70, I came out very well.  Now it will be put back into the mail and sent for a Turbo Tune and then life will be GOOD!

Hmmm, having problems uploading the photos...

Nevermind... figured it out, obviously!

You were Lucky Graybird your stock looks very nice!!!  Gene you make it sound so easy! lol I actually went down in my basement and shot about 100- 150 pellets through the gun and it shot very well for not being broken in yet.  one thing was the screw in front the trigger that holds the stock to the reciever was loose.  and so were the other ones,  I could actually move the piece forward..  so I tightened it up and too my suprise I had to re sight in the scope every thing changed...  the gun was shooting way high to the right after I tightened it down... I'll post up pics of the shot groups...  prob later tonight.  best ones were Predators.. not suprising, crossman deystroyers, cphp, and crossman field points.  they all shot well.

: tunaboat August 05, 2009, 12:58:01 AM
I picked my Airhawk up at my local Cabela's yesterday.  It has one scuff mark on right side of the stock which I can easily repair.  It was not stamped with the R on the stock and barrel as many refurbs are.  Nearly all the screws needed tightening.  The barrel was very dirty and it took about 6-8 patches with Goo Gone before they started to come out clean.
I ran about 20 CPHP through her next, just to get a feel for the gun.  It is a bear to cock.  Of course all is new and will wear in some.  There was plenty of "twang" there when shot.  The Airhawk seemed to be grouping ok at 20 yards shooting with the open sights.
Next I put her in the spring compressor and took her apart.  This Airhawk will be my 3rd home tune job.  I found the burrs on the stamped out areas not to be as bad as the two Gamo's I have previously tuned.  The original seal looks good with no damage.  I though the spring guide fit the id of the spring pretty well too.  After de burring and lubing I will reassemble with the original parts.
My overall impression of the Airhawk is that it is a good buy.  Especially at this refurb price.  If your on the fence with this one I'd say buy it.  If you don't mind a ding or two on the wood or can refinish the stock yourself, go for it.  A good airgun to practice your home tunes on.  After I get this one back together and sighted in with the scope I'm going to give it to the kid next door.  I'll have a shootin partner for sometime I'm sure.

Do the rifles that you all have received so far have scope stops?  The early versions did not have any provision for a scope stop, but I'm wondering if they've since added one.  I'm in the market for a new springer, and the final two candidates are the air hawk or a beeman RS2.  The air hawk is $60 cheaper, which does factor into the equation!  However, I don't want to fight scope creep for the life of the rifle.  Decisions, decisions.
: Re: Ruger Airhawk $69

I purchased mine from Sportman's Guide when they had them, and yes, it did have a scope stop. Frank
: Re: Ruger Airhawk $69
: BENBO August 07, 2009, 03:17:26 PM
Some do, some don't, have the scope stop that is. I ordered one and it came without a scope stop.  I have noticed that others received guns with scope stops. It was returned because of a broken rear site(upon receipt). I spoke with a sales representative who agreed that scope  creep would be a REAL problem with the included scope and rings. I requested that one with a scope stop be sent as a replacement and was told that it might be a longer wait than usual. I own a air hawk , bought new, that has a scope stop. I would think that as an alternative you could drill and tap a screw stop without damaging the gun.

I have an early model without the scope stop. I used a 1 piece mount and drilled just to be sure and no problem. Just remove the trigger group before drilling.

: bnations August 13, 2009, 06:26:08 AM
Well, I received my Air Hawk last night, and it has no scope stop.  Also, the stock was damaged in several places.

I'm not impressed with Cabelas' shipping department, as the gun was single boxed in a thin cardboard box with only a couple of blocks of foam to keep the gun from shifting around.  Two of those blocks failed at some point, so the gun was sliding around inside the box by the time that it reached my house.  Also, the scope in it's own little box was simply placed into the gun's box loose, so it banged around during the ride over as well.  All told there were 3 or four blemishes on the stock, plus the windage adjustment wheel was torqued pretty badly.  It would only click through about half of it's revolution, so the rear sight was move around on it's own.  The pictures tell the story.

I spoke with the nice folks at Cabelas this morning, and they're giong to ship a replacement today.  So, I am impressed with their customer service department.  I offeered to send her pictures of the shipping damage, and she replied that there was no need.  She assured me that she would ask the shipper to verify a scope stop on my replacement.  The blemishes I can live with as it's going to be a hunting rifle, but I don't feel like doing any machining to keep the scope stable.

Now, having said that, I do like the gun itself.  It's a good sized gun that shoulders well.  I fired about 15 or 20 rounds down range last nignt, and it's a bear for recoil and buzz.  A deburr and lube tune will definitely be in order, but the power appears to be there.  I didn't bother with mounting a scope, so it remains to be seen whether the stock will work well with a scope, but it seems okay for open sights.

I waited until last week and I rolled the dice on the $69 Airhawk. For once in my life I think I might have thrown a lucky 7. The gun I got came in two plain brown boxes but it looks NEW. One small mark on the fore stock that looks like a blemish in the varnish more than a dent or something caused by it being used. Even better than the way it looks is the way it shoots I put a scope on it and shoot about 30 shoots before I had to go to work. I have never had anything shoot so good first day right out of the box. I'll post some pixs and the target I used to sight in the scope. It was only about 3 inches off when I took my first shoot. I looked everywhere and can't find a letter " R " stamped on it . It was very hard to put it away and go to work! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS RUGER AIRHAWK INFO ON BARGAIN GATE.

: Cabela's exchanged my damaged gun
: bnations August 20, 2009, 02:30:26 PM
The replacement arrived Wednesday afternoon, and it's in much, much better shape.  In fact, were it not for the 'R' stamps, I would be tempted to say that it were new.  It was double boxed with all styrofoam still intact.

Out of the box, it like the previous one was a very rough shooter.  No detonations, thankfully, but lots of twang and twist.  So, I immediately started tearing it down.  I cleaned up the interior, which had almost no oil thankfully.  The spring has a nice patina, so I'm glad that I tore it down right away before the rust got too thick on it.  The piston has lots of rust freckles and just a very thin coat of a light oil similar to 3-in-1.  Not as pungent as the normal Chinese mystery oil.  I spent last night sizing a washer to fit inside the piston sleve per Gene's suggestion,  buttoning the piston, and lubing with good quality moly and JM tar.  The compression chamber looked good, so I skipping honing it.  I did debur all of the cutouts in the compression tube.  The transfer port actually had a burr, so I carefully filed it out (hopefully without opening it up too much).  So far, so good.

The trigger almost defeated me, though, as holes for the pins were really rough.  I spent two hours last night trying to get the pins back in while it was in my spring compressor before giving up.  Tonight after work, I took dremel and file to them to smooth out the tool marks until they would accept the pins with just a little more than finger pressure.  I also had to carefully round one end of each pin as they were ever so slightly peened.  Oh, and the frickin', frackin' lever pins seem to fall out every time the wind blows, whcih makes things interesting in the Chinese proverb way.  But, I"m thinking happy thoughts now :-)

Now that the kids are off to sleep, it's time to button it back together and see what kind of difference the lube tune makes.  I'm hoping for a good smooth shooter with just a thunk, as it should have plenty of power for squirrels, rabbits and birds already.  If not, then it'll be time to bed the stock and see what difference that makes.

The stock doesn't have any nicks or bangs to it, but the finish itself looks bad.  It's almost like someone laid it on a towel before the final varnish (or oil) coat completely dried.  Hard to describe, but when you hold it to the light, there's definite patterns in the finish that shouldn't be there.  Since this will be a hunting rifle, I'm probably going to try my hand at camo.  Oh, one stock bolt was boogered up, but I cleaned it up and reblued with no problems.
: RE: Cabela's exchanged my damaged gun
: bnations August 20, 2009, 02:34:00 PM
I forgot to mention that this new rifle has the scope stop.  Also, the picture above, DSC_2405_T.JPG, shows what I was trying to illustrate about the waviness in the stock's finish.  It's a picture from the first rifle that I got, but this second one has the same patterns in the stock.  I might try to buff it out and then just put on a poly coating for now.  Who knows, but it sure is fun to tinker :-)

Glad to hear they replaced your rifle with a nice one.   That's great....

I'm looking forward to your first reports on how the rifle shoots after your work on it.   As for hunting...... I'm sure it'll make a great hunter.  I have a new Ruger Blackhawk (same rifle different stock) and I took it out for it's first hunt this afternoon.   Nailed 2 woodchucks with 2 head shots at 20 and 25 yards.  Both G-hogs went down hard and stayed where they were shot, I'm really impressed with the accuracy and power of my Blackhawk...  No doubt yours will be just as effective as a hunter  :)

: RE: Cabela's exchanged my damaged gun
: bnations August 20, 2009, 05:15:39 PM
Well, I got it all back together and put about 30 pellets through it.  Mixed emotions.  The twang is mostly gone, and it doesn't twist at it previously did, and cocking is more quiet, but those are the only positives.  It's still pretty loud, and it wacks the shoulder pretty good.  I messed something up in the trigger b/c it's now breaking much harder.  It's possible that I installed the sear backwards.  It fell out at one point, and I didn't see which way it went in.  On face was flat, and the other had a chamfer to it, so tomorrow I'll disassemble and swap the sear around to see if that tames the trigger.

It's possible that I just don't know what to expect, as my only other springers are a B3 and an R7.  Compared to the AirHawk, they don't even move when shooting.  And the B3's trigger is better.

The one bad thing I can say about my airhawk is the trigger is really heavy. I tried to clean and polish the parts I could get to without removing the spring but it didn't make much difference. Am I right to say that the adjustment screw only changes the amount of creep. And that my best bet to make it pull easier would be to polish the area were the sear and piston connect when the gun is cocked

HELP!!!  So as most of you know, I picked up this little Ruger.  I decided to see what it looked like inside and as soon as I removed the two pins holding the (what I'm going to call) upper trigger assembly, it exploded on me and sent pieces all over the garage.  I found a schematic on line for the RWS 34, but this doesn't look like the pieces I'm looking at in a pile on the work bench.  Does anyone have a schematic for this or pictures that you would be willing to post so I can try and re-build this?  As you can probably also tell, this is the first time that I have taken apart a "spring" air rifle.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Scroll to the bottom it is a picture of the T-05 trigger. Next time use a spring compressor or bar/pipe clamp and you will have no problem.

Sorry to hear about your little mishap just be glad you didn't get hurt. I don't have an exploded view but I do have both an rws 34P and an airhawk. It's Friday night and I am on my way to the beach to see my wife daughter and grandson for the weekend. (though life they have) The inside of the airhawk is very much like the rws 34 so the print you have should help. The first thing you need to do is make a spring compressor This very important. I was planing to take my airhawk apart on Monday If you still need pix of the inside post a thread on Sunday and I will put up the pix as soon as possible. You can find a sample spring compressor in the library you can't put it back together with out it. Sorry but Monday is the best I can do.

Here you go.  I forget where I found this on the internet, but I've had it on my hard drive for some time.  It's easier to just upload it to my website rather than search again.

Update:  I've put about 500 rounds through the airhawk now and the recoil has dropped I'll say 40%  it shoots alot smoother and cocks smoother,  It grouped at 40 yds 2" dia.  groups on average with CPHP,  which isn't too bad.  Not as accurate as my G1 but...  I believe it will be in time.   the trigger is alot lighter on the airhawk.   It seems that if you stick with the same pellet shoot it over 1500 pellets through the gun over that time period everything gels.  I was 2 for 2 with the G1 over the weekend on black birds,  took two shots and that was it two down.  my brother with the airhawk was one for i dunno how many shots,,, lol    I can't wait to refinish the stock.  I am going to start working on it this fall.  hopefully by the end of sept.

Keep shooting and they get better. I have mine set up for 1 mil-dot under at 20 meters. I pulled a couple but after the 5 shot warm up the rest are 10 shot groups.

Received the Ruger today.  Timely shipping - order last Wednesday evening. As someone else mentioned, there shipping packing is terrible.  The styrafoam that is supposed to hold rifle was busted up.  And the scope was just wrapped in brown shipping paper and thrown in the box.  Oh well, no major damage.
This gun had the "R" stamped on both sides of stock and the barrel receiver.  The stock had a few nicks and creases. It had obviously been used for awhile. (see photos)

That's the not so good.  Now the good. The cocking action is very smooth and light for a 1000fps rated rifle.  Barrel locks up nice and tight.
The trigger has a very light, smooth pull. It's supposed to be 2-stage but I felt no resistance until the gun fires. One of those surprise shooters. But it's so smooth I like it!
I shot it right out of the box with the iron sites which are truglo and solid. I didn't start adjusting until the 4th group. I wear glasses and I'm not very comfortable with iron sights - the front site and target are just a blur. I only have about a 7m range in the basement. Fires with a nice solid "thunk".  This is going to be a good one! definiitely worth the 80 bucks delivered.

I did it too and got my air hawk yesterday it is a little rough  but it's mostly dinged up stock but that is not a problem since I'm going to recarve it anyway but it shoots goos and is accurate and that is what counts. It shoots nice and smooth maybe buying a used or refurbished gun is not a bad idea since it's already broke in and you just need to do a little TLC to make if fine. howie

I popped the button a few days back after watching this thread for a while...It arrived 2 evenings ago, while the wife was still home..LOL  What's that?  A present I said... well, it will be..The grandson is going to need a nice air rifle to learn on!

Aside from some stock dings, a light "r" on both side of the forend of the stock and a missing pair of light elements on the rear sight (i removed the little "flap" that holds them), it is just fine... I'm gonna scope it anyway...   Now it needs  break in, and maybe a tune up... Then it'll go back in the box with Caleb's name on it..

50% or less what the local shops want for one!

: barrel droop rears it's ugly head
: bnations August 28, 2009, 11:39:28 AM
About 200 pellets through it, and the gun has really settled down.  Still dieseling, but the groups are tightening up, and the buzz is almost completely gone now.  So, I attached a nice scope to the gun last night with some quality rings (the kit scope and rings now reside on my B3), and yowza but this thing has barrel droop.  3.5 inches at 6 yards (the length of my garage) is not a pleasant thought.  Too much to shim, so an adjustable mount is in my future.  Unfortunately, the dovetail slots are on the short side (~4.5 inches), which rules out some of the better ones.  I've got what looks like an RWS C-Mount that will fit, and I'm going to see what it can do tonight.  I just hate to fiddle with that thing, though, it's so touchy.

I received my replacement for the damaged Air Hawk ( missing rear sight) today. In the interim I ordered one as a gift for my brother. His arrived in excellent condition, stock wise, but minus a scope stop. In my previous post I noted that I had requested a replacement with a scope stop and was told it might take longer but they would honor the request. Welllll , today the replacement arrived. The rifle looks new except for a small scar near the break lever screw( about 1/2 inch long). Bad part, no scope stop. The gun was doubled boxed but only fate kept it from being damaged as the smaller box had no supporting packing and just beat around inside of the larger box.
I guess that I will take both guns to the gun shop and have scope stops installed. I own a air hawk that I bought new ( which came with scope stop) that shoots pretty good. I will consider having them tuned a little down the road but for present will install a leapers one piece mount and  a center point scope on the latest gun. All in all for $75.00 received ,, OK bargain.

SOMEHOW I POSTED THE ABOVE REPLY IN THE WRONG PLACE OR UNDER WRONG DATE. SORRY.  JUST WANT TO ENSURE THAT I GIVE THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE AIR HAWK. Like the guy who wanted to live to be a hundred years old. On his 45th birthday he told his friends, " so far so good."
: Got mine today
: atchman2 August 31, 2009, 12:57:25 PM
The gun itself looks really nice.  I actually nicked it myself already with a screwdriver tightening it up :(

All the screws and stuff are loose on it-ALL of them!  So make sure that is one of the first things you do.

Secondly, the barrel is full of some nasty black stuff.  Took me awhile to get all of it out.

I couldn't get the iron sights to move far enough over so I had to put the scope on it.  Cranking the sight all the way to the right it is still shooting 4" to the left.  When I put the scope on (had no choice) it was shooting 4" to the RIGHT!  Eventually I got the scope to shoot more or less straight, but the gun really needs some time to wear in.

I'm not sure if there is anything really wrong with it.  I had things to do so I only got to shoot 25 or so pells.  Maybe I'll get some more shots in tomorrow.
: RE: Got mine today
: atchman2 September 01, 2009, 09:34:58 AM
No matter what I can't get the iron sights to work. I am going to pull them off later.

I took the gun almost totally apart and found even more loose stuff!  The pivot screws were very loose which was causing some accuracy problems.

Once I got everything tightened up it has started to settle in a bit.  I still can't hit anything consistently, but it has gotten better by quite a bit.  I had to shim the scope since the barrel must be drooping a bit.

My barrel pivot bolt is loose also. After cocking the barrel will swing freely.  The accuracy still seems ok with the iron sites. But I'm farsighted, the front site and target are just a blur.
Ordered a 4-16 40mm scope for $48 from DealExtreme. Will post my impressions when I receive and sight in. I have a couple of their scopes and no problems so far.

Indeed this is a long thread and has been quite informative. I bit twice and now must get down to doing some shooting. I do have a question and hope that I am in the right section. Question, both of my Air hawks came without scope stops. is it possible that a novice can drill and tap a hole for installing a scope stop or is this a job better left to a gun smith or someone with a great deal of gun smithing  experience? I have drilled and tapped before but my screw ups were not as expensive as this could turn out to be if there is a OH! OH!. Awww Crap!!  Gosh Darn it. DAMN!!!   ETC.

If I install a Leapers accushot one piece mount is it necessary to install a scope stop? Or would a two piece  Leapers mount be OK ?  Thanks for the input,, Ben

I installed a 0ne piece 4 screws mount have have not even bothered using the stop. Mine is RS2 and have similar stop as ruger and I gave it about 1/8 inch gap betweeen end of mount for reference and have not moved since a last year.

I have one of the old ones without the stop and that's what I did just to be sure. Remove the trigger assembly, bottom out your mount, remove the pin and mark where it goes with a scribe/nail. Remove the mount and drill the hole. File the burs and clean the inside and re-assemble. Took about 15 min start to finish.

Have you shot it yet?  I can't hit crap with mine yet.  That is after taking it apart and tightening everything.  Maybe it will come around after a few more shots.  I'm really disapointed with the iron sights not working.  Maybe it has a bent barrel or something.  No matter for that little money I can use it to learn.

At 10 yards it is still all over the place.  I'm going to try and check the screws again tomorrow before shooting it again.

Keep shooting it.  Mine took about 200 or so pellets before the groups settled down, and that was after a good deburring and lube tune.  Now it's quickly becoming one of my more accurate guns.  However, it's probably my most hold-sensitive one as well, so it requires a lot of technique to coaxe a good group out of it.l

Well it has started to settle down a bit. I'd guess that I've shot 250 pells through it and it is getting better with every shot.  Again, I can't get the iron sights to work, so it is all scope.  As far as looks, the gun is great.  Nice heft, etc.
