: Survived my first crash this morning
: kirby999 July 28, 2009, 02:05:59 AM
On one of my mountain bikes . It was bound to happen sooner or later . I was cruising through town on one a multi-use path( some of it used to be called a sidewalk . In Georgia if there's a MUP that parallels the road , that's where you are supposed to be ) and had just crossed the road to a small park , momentum took me off the left side of the concrete path into the wet grass which was a couple of inches drop , getting back on path , the rear tire scrubbed trying to climb and the chain must have gotten knocked off the chain ring , because when I tried to pedal , it was freewheel , nothing there and I wobbled off balance , almost going over the bars . My 4th and 5th fingers are sore as heck , luckily I had gloves on that saved the skin on my palm , My left knee has a small strawberry , and my right shin is missing some skin , probably from the chainring or chain . I'll survive . LOL I bet I'll find a few more aches and pains in the next couple of days . Oh the bike ; the stem was turned almost 90 degrees , but I was able to manhandle it close enough to ride back home 2 miles and it took some cosmetic damage to the brake levers , it'll survive too. :D  kirby

Glad it wasn't worse.  Always wear the helmet, bro.  Road rash sucks but a fracture or head injury.  Be careful out there.

Thanks guys . I always wear the helmet , eye protection and gloves . just a couple of minor bruises and one scrape , but I'm sure I'll "feel" more in the next couple of days . Bill ; I'm sort of hooked on this biking for health thing . It makes me feel better everyday I ride , helps keep me young . I'll just have to be more careful and maybe not ride so hard sometimes  :p . kirby

Sorry to hear about your injuries and your bike

It's good to see that you weren't hurt too badly - those kind of wrecks can be painful sometimes

I hope you mend quickly here in the next couple of days

Take Care

Tylor

Hey David,

I'm still 26, I just can't seem to get my body to agree with me ! Every bang and bruise that I received in football and basketball, as well as every bang and crunch that I received in the service of our country, are always there to remind me that I have followed a tough road through my life.

Now's the time to try not to add to those aches and pains, and just enjoy living, for a time !

Take care of yourself buddy, we all need you here !!!!

I've been there and done that also, many years ago. Tried to make a turn at high speed and dropped the front wheel in a crack in the pavement, landed in a pine tree about 6 ft. off the ground. bike was a big mess, can't remember what all it took to get it back on the street but would have been better off getting a new one...

It wasn't all that bad really , I'm just sore all over from the sudden stop !! hitting the concrete . The bike's ready to go again , I straitened the bars up when I got home . Here the shin scrape . It aches worst than it looks . LOL kirby

I've been riding for a couple of years now . I try to ride some everyday , I average about 50 miles a week . You are right it could have been worse . There have been times when I've taken the chance and ridden it the edge of the street and it seems like there's always one driver that gets as close as they can when they pass , even if they have a clear lane to pass from the other direction . That's why , even though it rough riding , with curbs , driveways , walkers and golf carts , I mostly take my chances on the multi use path . The street is smoother , but IMO more dangerous . I don't like my chances going up against a crewcab Ford F450 with huge mirrors hanging out , just waiting to knock someone off their bike.  :emoticon:  kirby

Happy you didn't get hurt too much....especially your trigger finger!!!!!

Been there, done that a few times mt. biking.  Lots of minor scraps and bruises.  Worst one was downhilling down a switchback and the handlebars caught onto some long weeds on the side of the path, and made my bike do a full stop and I going over the handlebars.  Didn't break anything but sprained my left wrist.....It's over 5 years now....but if I press the hand back towards the bicep it hurts abit.  The right hand I can press it more back before feeling the pain.  So far no broken bones......
