: Favorite Shootin Films
: cnsjones September 02, 2009, 08:32:11 AM
Lets start a list.  When we get ten, I will post them in summary form.  These will not be "best" or "ranked" -- just favorite shootin flicks.

Mine is the one identified in my posting picture: "The Shootist"  -- In my book, this is the film that John Wayne should have gotten an oscar for. This was the Duke's last film and he was himself dying of cancer at the time the film was made.  Another of my favorite actors, Jimmy Stewart, plays the doc who tells John Bernard Books, a gunfighter, that he is dying of cancer.  Among the other actors are Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, Hugh O'Brian, Richard Boone, Harry Morgan, and John Carradine. Great plot, good action, and a good moral story.

For those of you that are also John Wayne fans, did you know this:
"John Wayne was born May 26,1907 as Marion Robert Morrison. His name was never legally changed to John Wayne. His nickname "Duke" came from a dog his family owned..." Source: jwplace trivia

Yep I almost went with Shooter too, since it was fresh in my mind, but Shootist is a classic.  I caught Shooter couple weeks ago (kept it on the DVR), great action and get the bad guys film!

Not sure if this one qualifies, but it has guns and shooting.

ElDorado with John Wayne and several other famous names.
Some of my favorite scenes are when James Cahn fires is sawed-off double barrel shotgun. Not quite as accurate as Mr. Quiggly, but he does make an impression on you! :)

For me it would be "High Noon" with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly (She's hot and this is her first major role I believe).  Next would be the recent movie "Shooter".

I will throw one more into the mix, as it is primarily rifle (sniper) related, and I would venture that not many have seen it: "Enemy At The Gates"  -- 2001 movie about the battle for Stalingrad, and supposedly based on a true story. (Jude Law. Ed Harris, and Ron Perlman)

This is the rifle used in the movie "Shooter" I think.  It is good to know that we have some guys on our side that can shoot like this!

Pretty amazing stuff--- The Cheytac M 400 .408 Sniper rifle:

My take on Quigley Down Under.  Used to have an 1879 Remington.  Never could shoot it as well as the movie character.  His shots were amazing, espeically considering he NEVER adjusted his tang sight which was set for five hundred yards shots but could cut a rope at ten yards.  Hollywood.

Oh, I forgot one.  The 1950's "Red Badge of Courage" with Audy Murphy.  Those guns in that movie are REAL, not repros.

"Enemy at the Gates" is a great film. Saw it once in the cinema....and saw it 3 times on dvd.

That book about that Russian sniper is required reading in the Canadian military.....a soldier friend told me that.

And here they are:

Ten Shootin’ Films

The Shootist (John Wayne)
Shooter (Mark Wahlberg)
Quigley Down Under (Tom Selleck)
El Dorado (John Wayne-- also Robert Mitchum)
Outlaw Josie Wales (Clint Eastwood)
Sgt. York (Gary Cooper)
Blazing Saddles (Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Slim Pickins)
High Noon  (Gary Cooper)
Enemy At The Gates (Jude Law. Ed Harris, and Ron Perlman)
Red Badge of Courage (Audie Murphy)

Any additions, feel free!!

Surprised that someone didn't give us "Dirty Harry" --
But almost all the Clint Eastwood movies were "shootemups" and some of the old "Spaghetti" westerns were pretty good.

I also liked Open Range with Robert Duval and Kevin Costner.

thanks guys

Quigley Down Under was definitely a bit of Hollywood story making, but one of my favorite movies. Actually, if you watch the movie, Quigley did adjust his tang mount vernier sight a couple of times. True, he should have been doing it more, given the rainbow trajectory of a 45-110. As a bit of trivia, the rifle Tom Selleck used in the movie was custom built by Shilo Sharps in the USA. Shilo Sharps builds what are acknowledged as some of the finest Sharps pattern replicas. I had a Davide Petersolli Sharps replica, in a No. 3 Creedmore pattern, 45-70. What a delightful rifle that was, some of the most beautiful wood and craftsmanship I have seen. The double set trigger on my rifle was incredible. I had the tang sight dialed in for 150 yards and didn't adjust it much, usually just applied Kentucky windage. It sure required a LOT of hold over to lob 405 gr. pills at a steel Buffalo target at 500yds. "Ping"

Shilo sure makes some fine Sharps rifles.  A friend was retiring and wanted something special like a Sharps.  I told him to call Shilo.  When he did, they listened to what he wanted and told him that they had a rifle which just about met his specs and the original customer backed out on the order.  He got it that week for about $1800.  Don't recall all the features but we figured the first guy must has plunked about $600 down as an initial payment.  Boy, did he make out!
