Here is a pic of what the Viper is like now. This was shot at a awkward 12 yds(only way I could shoot today) and with six shots, using Crosman pointed hunting pellets,7.9grains. I was very shaky. The thing I notice most, post tune is that hold sensativity is almosy non existant now.AKJC1977

Man guys I apologize I have never been able to put a pic in this site. If I do I have to cut it down so small ya cant see it. I guess its my system? If someone will tell me how to do it I will post later. I just spent an hour trying to post that and it still was too big. Attatcments must be under 150kb it says, maybe I should just stick with the shootin and leave these computers alone? LOL AKJC1977

Good group, so tight I can't see between them......grin.  Sometimes these comp. are a pain in the a$$. Photo bucket and Image shack both work fairly easy.

Hey Jason, my non-tuned Viper was getting groups like that at 8 meter distances with Crosman Hunting (Cheap ones in a small milk carton) also.  After a little over 1200 shots, she didn't like the hunting pellets that much anymore....and liked the Crosman Premier Hollow Points.  So I shot those outta her.  But then I started to shoot some GTA Shooting Matches....and the Viper is one of my more accurate airguns....so I used her for the 30 Yd Bench Rested Rifle Match (No PCP's in this match).  Unfortunately, the CPHP's had flyers every 5th or 6th shot.....the Crosman Hunting pellets were abit worst.  The search had begun!!!!!  After testing about 8 types/brands of pellet, I finally found one that can land in the "Black" everytime if I do my part......the extra heavy .177 Beeman Kodiak (10.6 grain)....so I use them for the match.  But there's a belief that heavy pellets will shorten the gun's spring.....so I go back to the Crosman Hunting and Hollow Pts. for regular plinking.

Btw, the spring did break after over 3000 shots.....don't know if it was just it's time or because of the heavy pellets.  Replaced the spring with a Crosman spring....she is still shooting excellent.

Yeah I have replaced the Crosman cause of the flyers. Like ya said every 5th or 6th pellet is a flyer. Seems to be the ones that fit tight and crooked in the breech. I had some Beeman pointed,8.4 gr that had got a great deal on at Kmart. They are awesome in the Viper. I mean if ya can hold it there it will put 4 or 5 pellets thru same hole, wish I had of waited and posted some groups with the Beeman. I almost afraid people would think I'm B. S. 'ing them cause there is only one oblong hole. A fly landed on my target and I hit it while it was crawling,My wife saw that and got grossed out LOL. I have always had best groups outta domed or pointed, domed mostly. So I am gonna try some Superdomes and JSB exact's next. But the model 1239 Beeamn's I'm using are dang good, and seem very uniform in size. Thanks AKJC

Forgot to mention.....I also used the .177 Crosman Premier Ultra Magnums (10.5 gr) during my test....I think I even submitted a few target sheets using those pellets for the above-mentioned match. Those pellets had flyers also.......I think it's because their skirts were harder....probably using a different alloy mixed in with it's lead......and the skirts would not "open up" to catch all the air behind it.

Just recently I tried out some Beeman Crow Magnums (8.8 gr).....and they seem to do well out past 15 meters. I will test them out more before using them for the 30 yard match. They should be "safer" for the spring(s) of the airguns than the Kodiaks (10.6 gr).

Yeah if ya could find that perfect ratio of accuracy to longevity that would be great. I dont have a whole stable of airguns as some do on this site,so I will play it safe for now. But if I knew how to tune and rework a airgun I would be shootin whatever shot the best. One reason I am wanting a PCP gun so bad. I feel that there is less to wear and tear on them, but yet again I dont know much bout them either. Except for I want one.LOL Jason

Kinda sounds like a velocity variance. Before Gene tuned the viper it was up and down. The pre tune test He chronied was from a high of 1090 to a low of 865. It seemed fairly accurate but I noticed I had to adjust poi with scope considerably. After the tune the velocities never varied more than like 6 fps in 12 shots. That was before the seal and stuff was broke in,might even be better now. But I have no chrony to test it with. I could be wrong but I would be trying to find a chrony to buy or use and see if thats it. Cause I just switched to Beeman 8.4 grain pellets and the groups I am gettin now makes  the one in the pic look kinda bad. Good luck, and if all else fails give Gene a holla He will point ya in the right direction.Jason
