: Auto Cocking Springer
: JDnearAC September 09, 2009, 05:08:47 PM
Let's play pretend. We own an airgun factory and we want to make a springer that can be cocked by the push of a button. It could have a fixed barrel and be used by JD when he is old and feeble. The design could also be built upon to make a semi auto springer. Maybe if we get it started someone will steal the idea and really make it.
First make a small chamber in the front of the compression chamber. After you shoot you push a button on the fore stock. This button closes the breech air hole and opens a valve to an aux. air source. Air is forced into the compression tube causing the piston to compress the spring. When the spring is at the point where the sear is engaged the air will escape through a vent hole. when you hear the air, let off the button and the air valve will close and the breech hole will open. The spring will be ready to shoot again.

Well what do you think ? Should we start production.

There have been electric cocking springers before. As you can see they are very popular. I think the amount of air/pressure required to do what you propose would make the idea cost prohibitive. The best thing about springers is the simplicity.

Your aux air source will leak around your piston seal because the parachute effect only works going forward where it mushrooms. If you seal off your chamber and use aux air source/co2 and bam you got QB78/79

If you have a compressed gas source powerful enough to cock a springer, you have only to channel it the other way and use it to shoot a pellet.

But this leads to something I was wondering about the other day.  In a gun such as the one proposed, you have a volume of gas compressing the spring.  If it were possible to release the gas down the barrel at the same time the sear is tripped, would the escaping gas be given a boost by the piston, resulting in a higher fps than spring or gas, alone?  Remember, the gas will drop in pressure as it expands into the barrel, allowing the spring to recompress any in the compression chamber that has yet to bleed off.

Just what the world needs - a springer/PCP.  Should keep both camps happy, especially if used with nitrous oxide.

Now THAT would be interesting!

Use a gas ram style..put yer air into the front
end to force the internal piston back and once
cocked it would ex........just a version of a air ram
of sorts
