Was tasked by the boss to pick up another bag of dog food for Annie this afternoon on the way home from work -- "OK dear, anything else?" -- when at the check out stand I noticed the 99¢ Frisbees. Annie is a tireless "fetch the ball" kind of girl. More recently, I have been mixing up the occasional soft lob and she has responded with getting pretty good at "catch" too. So I invested an additional $5 in Frisbees (or about 30 minutes of un-interrupted chew time) this afternoon and came home with a surprise for my pup. She turns out to be a natural born Frisbee dog! There is a synergy between the Frisbee thrower and the dog I had long since forgotten since my college days with a friends dog. A required talent is getting the right amount of spin on a slow throw in a straight line. But after a couple of "ground balls" -- sorry my bad -- I lofted a nice slow floater out there for Annie and "wham". Just like a large mouth bass hitting a top-water popper, she instantly knew what to do with a Frisbee in flight. In less than 10 minutes, she and I had the routine down. Of course, the only way to keep Annie's interest is with two Frisbees. I don't throw the next one until she drops the first one at my feet. I am way too old to chase a frisky pup having the time of her life. But it was sure great to find out that Annie has natural talent ! Now, all we need is a little more space to stretch out for the really long throws, and some more practice on my part. If I make a good toss, she already knows what to do. :)
