: I Tryed Pops,, :)
: Timmyj1959@yahoo.com October 03, 2009, 10:11:06 AM
I spent alot of time on Yer FWB stock adding on & re shaping. Man she sure was looking good & is among the most comfortable stocks to shoulder I have ever put me paws on!! I even had Ping put his big ole bear paws like Yers on the grip to help me get the most comfortable grip I could. You can wrap Yer "Paw" thumb left or verticle,,,, dont matter,,,, feels good!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cool.gif)I finally got the fore arm extension added on today & got all the final shaping & sanding done. I had all me stains ect lined up ready for action. Then it happened,,(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-frown.gif),,,,,, the Aspen wood I used as spacers became all blotchy. NOT all white & even colored like I had hoped for. Then,,, the glue joint where the stock was broke in two showed up!! (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cry.gif)Back to mixin stain,,,,,, darker hides repair cracks I know so,, 3 more teaspoons of dark walnut stain added to me secret recipie. Ok,,,, startin to hide the repair crack now but the Aspen wood spacers are looking worse!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-surprised.gif)Note to self: NEVER use Aspen again,,,, it may be pretty & white but,,, it surpasses even spruce & pine when it comes to accepting stain un even!! At this point I am frantic to try & salvage a gorgious pc of wood Dave 1899 was kind enough to send me & cant tell Ya how frustrating it was that I nearly ruined it. I think I can salvage it at this point but I promise it is not what I expected!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-frown.gif)Sorry Pops,,, I tried. MAN have I got ALOT to learn!! Well,,,, at least your Diana 34 stock came out nice!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif)Tim.(http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg312/Timmyj1959/010-32.jpg)

Man! That is a BEAUTIFUL piece of wood there!!! I LOVE it!!!

It's got absolutely GORGEUS grain to it!!!

Reminds me of a fine antique violin. I love the shimmer it has.
: TIM ... QUESTION???
: kp4att October 03, 2009, 11:25:42 AM

I am working with a RWS 48 and everything was perfect until I wanted to apply the minwax polyurethane with brush after a beautiful staining. MY PROBLEM WAS AFTER THE 2ND GLOSS APPLICATION AND AFTER 3TH APPLICATION.  I WILL RESTART ALL THE PROCESS FROM CERO.

My question is if you only stain the stock?  or if you applied something more after the stain for a shinny appereance.

I will take her as is Son..:) That is one magnificent piece of work Timmy. Never mind the small spot in the aspen. That is her birth mark and you know you do not remove birth marks..:) Just beautiful Timmy and I cannot wait to get my meat hooks on her..:) What you have done with the comb is fantastic Timmy. WOW!

Again thank you so much for you hard work and talented crafting. I am gonna have to lock that one up..:) Cause when someone see's her they will want to take her home with them..:) She will always stay in my gun sack all protected from Ernie and other's from touchy and feely..:)

Thanks Sam & Hilario for the kind words. Gerald,,,, in my pics there is only stain on the stock. The only reason it apears "shiney" is because I final sanded with 4-00 steel wool. I "Buffed" off the stain with a rag thus giving it a gloss like appearance in the pics. )It will be dull in the morning) Gerald,,,, I am a HUGE Min Wax fan. I prefer spray on clear. Brushing on poly will surley "Melt" the stain under causing problems. I used to paint cars & motorcycles with state of the art HVLP spray guns. I can tell Ya,,,, a $9 can of Min Wax "Spray Bomb" can hold its own all day long against a $700 automotive spray gun all day long in the right hands!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cool.gif)(Come on Sam,,,, You know you can do it too!!)(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-innocent.gif)Im still learning,,, just when I think I got it licked,,,, I get kicked in the teeth!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cry.gif)Course,,,,, I bet Sam never (Like me) had to "Nib" a car down & spray it again!! LOL!! Live & learn,,,,, Tim.

Great work Timmy!

You're right about a spray bomb against an HVLP gun! I did ALLOT of custom paintwork on bikes with DupliColor rattle cans! And yes... I had to nib PLENTY of runs. Some panels had to be resanded, sprayed, blended and buffed...LoL Then I discovered fast flash reducers!

My great uncle taught my dad to be a furniture maker and he used to wax finish some pieces. No oils, no varnish or polyurethane. Just stain and beeswax.  Mostly jewelry boxes and such but it comes out REALLY nice and easy to repair if it's scratched. Long arduous process though!

Hi Timmy  what i do when I put trim caps on stocks is to cover the trim caps with blue masking tape then stain them remove the tape and varnish this way you keep the color of the caps and they don't color you might try it on aspen sometime again , Howie  PS the stock looks great;  Also varnish stain in darker colors sprayed on using a trim (jamb) type gun works great you can spray more color on the repair making it alittle darker and hide the repair better.

Hey Gene, where'd ya get the FWB?
: Re: I Tryed Pops,, :)
: Gene_SC October 06, 2009, 03:42:18 PM

It is not an FWB but a Chinese Clone of the FWB 300...:) They are not available any long as far as I know. I bought it from Dave1899 along with a beautiful Webely/Scott Vulcan .177.

The Chinese clone is smooth as silk and shoots in a straight line at around 550 fps. Come on Tommy, break out your LG...:) We can go head to head..:)
