: Good way to de-stink hands
: RedFeather October 09, 2009, 06:31:19 AM
I found this out while on vacation this summer and I got some gas on my hands while filling up.  My wife hauled out some Purell hand sanitizer and poured a big dollup onto my palms.  Well, after rubbing it in real well, the gas smell was just about gone.  I've tried a lot of things to get that stink off but the hand sanitizer's alcohol content really evaporates it.  Cleaned a rimfire this morning and used Sheath (phew!)  and Hoppes No. 9 (double-phew!), getting both on my fingers.  A couple slooshes of hand sanitizer and I was smelling springtime clean (scented, of course.)  Try it.  Your spouse will appreciate it.

PS - Don't put it on the gun.  If your shooting stinks, it will not improve that.

Hey Red,

In my younger days, I would put a little dab of Hoppe's No. 9 behind each ear, it drove the real women crazy wild ! The girls wanted a man just like daddy !

It has more uses than just cleaning guns :)

Ha, ha!  I once tried to use Hoppes to clean a black powder barrel that had a bit of rust in it.  Used it on steel wool wrapped around a jag.  I wasn't thinking, and let the Hoppes get onto the  web of my hand where I was gripping the muzzle.  Must have worked on it for an hour.  Took several years for the skin there to come back to normal.  Would become very dry and irritated in winter.

PS - The wife said to also tell you all that Purell is great for wiping permanent marker off of white boards, too!

PPS - What kind of girl is attracted to Hoppes No. 9:

Get a soap bar sized piece of Aluminum. I use one when I come home from fishin to get the bait smell off my hands. The wife says it works!!!

Just lather up your hands with regular soap then use the aluminum as a "scrubber" .  I don't know why it works, but it does!!!

Oh, Redfeather, you crack me up with that pic.
Stainless steel is also supposed to take the stank off. The N'onion bars that are sold for that very purpose are bars of stainless steel.  Guess that explains why the CV blade of my Case trapper smelled like squirrel meat after this morning, but the stainless blade did not. I'm special. My knife has 1 carbon steel blade, and 1 stainless blade.

BTW, I like the smell of Sheath, FP10, too.

Well, Sheath ain't so bad, but it is hard to get off.  Just nice to have a little bottle of sanitizer handy in case of gas, etc.  Now, you could walk around with an aluminum billet in your pocket, too.  Might get smiles from the ladies but hard looks from the guys, though.

I haven't tried it for gasoline, but for any type of solvent or paints try "Paint Buster" from 3M. Works even with dried-on paints and won't dry out skin the way some hand cleaners do. You can get it at most autobody supply houses, or order through autoparts stores that carry 3M products.

Well, the sanitizer is something you can keep in the glove compartment, or man purse, or wherever.

I keep a bottle of the hand sanitizer in the glove box also (girl friend is an RN). Next time I get gas slopped on me I'll have to give it a try.

Is Hoppes No. 9 what they were referring to  in the old song, "Love Potion Number 9?"
