: I'm looking into Co2 Rifle's.....any suggestions?
: Evo|ve_S|66 October 09, 2009, 05:25:31 PM

Alright, so I've been thinking lately....a lot. I have owned nothing but break barrels, side-levers and of course pumps. And I think it's time to sink into the scene of CO2/PCP type shooters.....I never thought I'd see the day. Haha, probably leaning more into the QB78 or QB79's? I would like to start off getting an inexpensive shooter for now, and maybe upgrade to a Marauder or a Disco later on.....I have a couple of paintball CO2 tanks laying around, with a couple of 12g powerlets. Now I was looking at the QB series and I was confused between the two, one being the price and two being the setup(s). From looking at the pictures, the QB79 needs a special adapter to use paintball tanks or does it have a pin valve type system already installed? I want to get the QB78 because it's a simple setup, but I don't like the fact that I'd be using powerlets and throwing them away....I'm kind of confused and in a rut....if there are any suggestions for other rifles, please feel free to post! Oh ant the price tag would be under $120....preferably under $100, I already have a scope setup n' whatnot. Sort of just seeing how far I can stretch my dollar  :)Thanks,-Jarred

The QB79 is all set to use the 9 oz and smaller paintball tanks for CO2..

I've enjoyed mine a lot..

Shoots most all pellets well...Realtively quiet right out of the box...

You have not defined its use, plinking , target or hunting?

I recommend saving another hundred and getting a melick 2078 with thumbhole!  it is my only one holer at 30 that i have.

We will see about the disco i just got.  I am saving up for a Rich in MI 79 converted to PCP.  They are the ultimate sweet!  $600 is a bit steep

to be honest i have owned severfal qb models in different calibers and they all seemed to need some kind of fiddling often enough to make me want to use a pump sheridan...LOL, but the other day i found a crosman 2260, and i have shot close to 250 pellets and it seems to be consistent enough. 30 shots per powerlet. strong enough for starlings, it will hit a can consistenly at 25 yards, and most of all... it has not broken or hiccuped at all. If you are lucky, find a crosman 2260, or better yet, a 160.

Right now I have 2 of Mike's QB rifles a QB78 and a 2078 both shoot great the 2078 way tuned by Mike and is doing about 700 fps and gets about 80 shots per fill ( 2 cyls) nice gun I have recarved the stock on one and made a treoene / Mannlicher stock for the other a idea Mike came up with he has some more stocks in the Mannlicher style. howie

Awesome! Thanks for the input guys :)

The defined usage will primarily consist of plinking, pest control and hunting. Having done some pest control yesterday with my 1377, I'll only need so much power :)

So basically the other QB78's and QB79's are just cosmetically different? And in terms of performance n' whatnot, they're all equal or am I getting this entirely wrong?

Hi:

Just my 2 cents but I love my Crosman 1760.  Lightweight, cheap, takes only 1 cartrige, loves Walmart Diasys, and is very accurate.  It's a reliable and accurate shooter right out of the box. No fiddling or mods required.

It has the same action as the 2240 pistol and all the upgrades and mods will work here as well.  Sadly they now only offer the 22 cal version, the 2260, at the el cheapo price - around $75 (use the Pyramid 10% code and get it for even less).  The currently available 1760SE has the steel breach and a scope and goes for aroung $175 - too rich for my blood.  On the good side, the 22 version makes better use of CO2 and is better for pest control.

You can change it over to a 177 but you will need a 177 bolt and barrel from Crossman - about $25 including shipping if memory serves.  Might as well do the icemaker transfer tube as well if you have it apart.

I modded the trigger with the two set screws to shorten travel, provide an overtravel stop and added a 3rd screw behind the trgger spring to make the trigger weight adjustable as well - total cost about $1.50, same as a cup of coffee unless you go to Mickey D's and get the senior coffee as I do.  Trigger is now light, short and predictable.

If you want to, you can add a steel beach and scope it or add a Daisy rear peep sight.  I went that route and modified the front sight by placing a small washer into a slot in the blade.  The hole in the washer is just the right size to trap a standard target bullseye at 40', the distance to my fence from the patio.  Choose you washer accordingly - you can find small washers at most hobby shops.

If you want to, you can do all the wild and hairy mods as done to the 2240 on the Crossman site, new valve, power adjuster, HDD, trigger/sear insert, go to HPA  etc., etc.  Never ending fun til the cash runs out!

Cheers,

Fatman

Another possibility is to go to the Crosman Custom Shop and build your own online. For like $85-$90 you can have a nice CO2 rifle with the steel breech and ready to mount the scope of your choice.

Oh awesome! I look forward to that Jim :)

I like Crosman's pistols, but having to put the mounts on the barrel is kinda....eh. But I guess that's why there's a steel breech that's being sold separately! I was actually really looking into the 2240, but I'm leaning more towards Co2 based rifles. Hehe :)

And actually Crosman's custom shop doesn't sound like a bad idea! I should look into that today

Thanks for the input and keep em coming!

Actually yep, I have looked into that one! I just wonder if there's a stock that covers up most of the forearm area to make it look somewhat like a rifle :) But I don't want to do to much work to get a shooter going, probably snag one from the web and call it a day....but at the same time I want a good shooter. Gotta get the best bang for the buck! Hehe

I know you don't want to go that high but the Hammerli 850 is proving to be a great shooter! and there are mods to go HPA

If you want a lot of shots and don't mind front end weight go with QB 79. If you want looks. balance and ease of use, got with QB78deluxe..2 powerlets will give you around 40 full shots or bulk fill it for economy.

i could speak about the qb78d.22 tuned by mike chronied at 712 to 717 with domed 14.3 rws i use kodiaks and very accurate out to 40yds no kiddin as far as known down power i can tell u cause i just target practice but at 40yds the preditor does penetrate far enough for a kill on a squirrel but at 25yds u will definitely be safe for hunting squirrel without a problem and they r very accurate and plenty of power ,i recommend this brand to anyonei had 2 of them. whoever wants to hunt under 30yds even at 35yds it will work because of the penetration i have seen at that distance.u must get it tuned and get a tko muzzle brake cause u wont here a thing .....jorge lopez

Jarrod,

I read your post and decided to take a picture for you.  I thought I was just a springer guy...until I saw how many CO2 rifles I have!  LOL.  As you can tell, I really like QBs!

AR2079 .22
AR2079 .177
QB79 with a 78D stock modified .177
AR2078 with a Howie Mannlicher stock .177
QB78 in a thumbhole .177
QB78D tuned by MM .22 (740 fps!)

And the others...
Daisy Avanti 888 .177
Crosman 2250 MM tuned from Joe Cuz .22
Crosman 1077 .177 my son's (horrific trigger)

Jarrod,

Okay so here's why I like the QBs...

1)  Very inexpensive but not cheap.  I.e., well made.
2)  Fun to shoot.  They can be very accurate and triggers are pretty good and can be made better.
3)  Fun to work on!  Easy to tune and many ideas for mods.
4)  Easy to work on and your hands don't get all greasy like springer work.  Also no messing with a compressor.  Allen wrenches, screw drivers, o-rings and plumber's silicone grease.  If you've got sandpaper and a drill and a file you can pretty much tune one up.  Add a couple hundred fps.
5)  Parts are readily available

WRT to the Avanti 888 a great JR 10m rifle.  Trigger is a bit heavy but buy is that Lothar Walther barrel awesome.

For the same reason I like the QBs, I like the Crosman 2250.  Lots and lots of mods.  Easy to work on (except that darn ball bearing in the safety) and fun to shoot.  Everyone should have a carbine that punches them out .22 at 640 fps.  Awesome for a "walk in the woods" and you won't be confused with a madman with an AK47.

The Crosman 1077, well my Mother said if you don't have anything nice to say...
