: I DID IT!!!!!!!! :)
: Timmyj1959@yahoo.com October 14, 2009, 01:06:26 PM
I cant believe I got the guts to do it but I did!! First off,, I want to THANK Brother Gerald for his AWESOME post about his 48 he recently did. If not for you Buddy I would not have had a clue as to how to do this. Thank you Brother Gerald Buddy!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif)I rounded up all Me stuff today & got down to busness. She is still in the "Rough" but I will get her all smoothed over!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cool.gif) Takes "Guts" to do this Folks,,,, after 3 cans of "Special Lube" I cut into Me Marauder stock!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-innocent.gif)LOL!! I think you are really gonna like this stock "Mr Bob"!! Im gonna "Chop" off about 4" & add on bout 2 1/2" Walnut forearm ext with white wood spacer. Soon as my new Morgan adjustable pad from Me Pops gets here Im gonna put that on her. I will cut down the grub screws & polish them up like chrome so they are even in the holes. LOTS to do but,,, the day went well & I am happy so far!! Tim. (http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg312/Timmyj1959/024-4.jpg)

Thanks for all the kind words Folks!! Im still learning but Im always tryin ta figure out new stuff too!! Due to the kinndness of another GTA Family member it looks like I will be picking up my new drill press tommorow!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif) Man Im gonna be dangerous with this thing!! This is kinda the reason I dont charge too much for my services,,,,I have received SO MUCH in return from my GTA Family it makes it hard to charge any money!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cool.gif)For those of you waiting patiently on my waiting list,,, I will be caught up soon ready to take in more stocks but,,,, Im gonna start charging a small fee for my work to cover expenses!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif)Stains & finishes are cheap but,,, sand paper costs are killing me!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-surprised.gif)LOL!! Tim.

: Rontier October 15, 2009, 02:52:48 PM
That's not Funny!!
I ordered a drill press from toolsnow, & got it on wedesday after UPS got done with it the Box was round" the fan guard was bent all the way into the motor  trashing the motor, I've called them abuot the problem ? no help yet.
The other thing is the one they sent me was not the one in the pic's or of good Quality, A Pro-Source, that I can buy from Big lots. Except-
for the rusty shaft ! everything looked ok .it's just not the one they show. I can buy one  for 40.00 bucks with no shipping & worry about UPS rolling it down the hill..
any I'm cool******..
hope you have better luck then me!

Timmy

If those are electrical lugs they are most likely made of aluminum. So the screw will be soft, they are usually good for a use or two and then they tend to start stripping the screw slot. If you have an industrial hardware store near by you can get a steel allen head set screw to go in that.

Looks good though, I'm not gutsy enough to do that to my Evanix stock but it looks good.

I don't know if you have seen this site or their catalog but it'll make you cross eyed after you head stops spinning.

Check out their dyes and stains

Thanks Al,,,, yes I know after talking with others the screws may not hold up to many adjustments. However,,, most Folks will get the comb where they like it most likely never change it. But,,,,,,, I have some Folks as well as myself working on a much better more durable design for the lugs that is simple yet exremly durable. Not only that my new design will make alignment issues a thing of the past!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cool.gif)It really only takes moderate preasure on the grub screws to hold the comb in place as no real preasure is aplied to it. All rough sanded & all I put my Marauder back together today & made several adjustments,,, so far so good.(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif)You do have a valid point though,, Im gonna make my new adjusters "Bullet Proof"!! Im not even gonna look at your link Buddy,,,,,, Im SOOOOOOO HAPPY with my new drill press Im going to get her reved up tommorow!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif) Ok I lied,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Im gonna take a quick peek at it!!(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-innocent.gif)LOL!! Tim.

Wow!  you have some cahones cutting into a $500 gun's stock!   That STAIN is Amazing!!! what color spec is that?  and if you don't mind me asking what finish do you use on your guns.  I've heard some people use Birchwoodcasey tru oil. products.  I am new to refinishing Gun Stocks and could use some Help!   I want to RE=finish my Refurb Ruger Air Hawk.  although it wouldn't hold a candle to yours... :)

thanx

Timmy I was reading into your old threads.  Do you use Pure tung Oil or Polymerized tung?   And if you don't mind sharing any other tips to using the Tung oil.

Thanx, fellow GTA member

Outstanding, Timbo.
I think you have the makings of a very successful custom stock maker.
I have a project in mind for you . . .

The TrueOil works fine, but don't put it on like varnish.
I usually use a filler stain first.  Put it on wet, and rub it off CROSS GRAIN before it drys completely.  Rub with a course cloth or you'll wipe the filler out of the grain.  Let it dry overnight and sand with good sanding products, not steel wool etc.  That will dig the filler out also.  Don't sand throuhg the stain, but work finer and finer (320-400) till it is flat and smooth.
The TrueOil is put on in several coats.  I usually start a coat that will wet toe wood well but not run.  When it is thoroughly dry (next day) add another, not as thick.  When it is dry, use 0000 steel wool and work all the way down to a uniform sheen.  When you first start with the wool, youll see a dull flat, but as you continue, you'll see the satin finish.
Now wipe ethe stock clean.  Put a drop of oil on your finger tims and spread it as far as it will go, then get another drop etc., etc.  What you're after here is to build a very thin coat.  Let it dry, and do it again.  After a couple of coats like this, lightly steel wool to the sheen again.  This now is like the shampoo bottle  "rinse, lather, repeat"  until you build up what you want.  Thin coats are the key.
This is a durable finish, and it is repairable.  Good luck, and rubbing.   Bob

PS  The old English boiled linseed oil thchnique was (after preping)  once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, and once a year for the rest of your life!  I'll take the Birchwood....
