ok guys, not too long ago i recieved a winchester 1000x, .177 from ed aka shadow in a barter deal. its a shooter for sure and my son ryan loved it............till the GRT triggered big cat and mm tuned qb78 arrived.
so, it seems ive re-inherited the winchester. but,........its kinda long. barrel length from breech to muzzle is 17 3/4 inches, with the muzzle break, its at 20 1/4. it makes for a loooooooooooooooooooong rifle.
i'd like to lop it off a bit, carbine style ya know ?
my question is to ya'll that have done some barrel chopping..........how much ?
thanks guys, itchin to do some tinkerin again...nest up will be some trigger tunin' ( its a hatsan,...no GRT available :( )

I choped my Hatsan mod 75 to a 14" barrel..
Its shots great "for a Hatsan peice of crap"
would have gone to 12 1/2" but would have
been to hard to cock...
Ps..Your Wincheaster is a Hatsan mod 55 ....

thanks peter, i think with the muzzle brake to add cocking leverage, i can probably get away with 12-13 inches of breech face to muzzle length.
now the fun begins....

okay guys,....the 1000x goes under the "knife" on saturday,...any last words of wisdom before this becomes a carbine ?
-
Well, not really.
I have not cut a barrel myself, but have had it done, and from what I know, you first test for a tight spot in the barrel, by slugging it from the breach.
It there is a tight shot, then you want to cut it with the tight spot working as a new Chock.
If there is no tight spot, then you need to tap the barrel, along the length of it, looking for a place with an imperfection, if so, then I believe you need to cut it shorter than the imperfection.
Again, I have not done this personally, but I thought you should know that there are ways of determining the correct length to chop it.
The advantage of a shorter barrel is that the recoil is after the pellet exits the bore, and not during the crucial final travel out of the barrel.
Paul Watts has chopped some barrels to only 6 inches, with great success, but I don't reccement that for your first one.
Cheers, David.

lol...thanks for the words of encouragement dave ! yes, this willl be my first air-gun amputation .............so keep your fingers crossed !!

Magic length of spring barrel rifle IIRC is from 10 to 12 inch. I pushed a pellet with a rod breech down and feel for tightness along the way. If there is no variance till it comes out of the muzzle it's not chocked. In my 5 that I chopped I found one and chopped it after the tight spot. I start chopping around 13.5 and on one I ended up with 13 inch coz I messed up the re-crown to get it to shoot right.

i have cut off a few barrels in my time , to start with most air guns are not choked and you will need to re crown a barrel after you cut it off the main thing in how long to make it is what you like as far as how the rifle looks and if you can cock it after you chop it I would try to cock it befor cutting it just choke up on the barrel just like a base ball bat and try to cock it if it's too hard go farther up the barrel toward the sight till you reach a spot where it's comfortable toe longer you make it the easyer it will be to cock you have the leverage working for you that way. as far as putting a choke on the rifle I have a tool that woks for me and I think timmy1959 had one made. you could check with hin too he has choped a few barrels too. howie
-
thanks howard,....pushing a pellet thru the barrel, ive found nothing to indicate that its choked. i'll likley go with a barrel length of about 13.5 inches ( removing about 4" ) . it'll be a bit more difficult to cock, but the muzzle break will be re-installed both for asthetics and added leverage.

One of the things I've found is when you shorten the barrel the time a pellet is in the barrel is shorter and this I think reduces the hold sensitive of the rifle . howie

Heres a 12" / 300mm B1
